Subject: In Defense of the Disney Magic

We recently returned from the second "official" voyage of the Disney Magic,
and I thought it might be worthwhile to dispel some rumors I have seen
floating in cyberspace.
First of all, it is definitely not true that Captain Tom was forced wear an
albatross around his neck by a group of angry passengers. I did hear talk
of making Mr. Rodney "walk the plank," but I assumed that was some kind of
new game children play at the Oceaneer's Club.
It is also not true that "everything went wrong" as some have so cruelly
alleged. In fact, I did find a restroom on deck seven where both the faucets
and toilets were in working order. True, some of the ladies did complain of
having to use pitchers of water to wash their hands in the restrooms, but
such comments only show what landlubbers they must be. It was indeed a
fanatical concern for cleanliness that led to many complaints. Many
passengers did not have washcloths in their "staterooms" (for so these
luxurious cabins are described in the Disney literature), but why does one
have to have washcloths anyway? Perhaps the passengers who found the toilets
in their cabins not working had more reason to complain, but I'm confident
that the chamber pot adorned with Mickey ears more than made up for some
temporary inconvenience.
The good ship Disney Magic pulled out of port bravely unconcerned about
whether or not there were enough washcloths, toilets, air conditioning, or
anything else to go around. "Damn the basics! Full Speed Ahead!" ordered
Captain Tom to shouts of "Huzzah!" from the crew.
Captain Tom pulled out all stops to make the voyage a successful one. In
fact once he brought the ship to a complete stop so that we could load eggs
which somehow had been forgotten in our attempt to leave port. Quality of
the
cuisine was of obvious concern to the Disney Chefs, and I am glad to report
that the dinners were at least equal to the best Ponderosa steakhouses in
the country.
I have heard some complain that there was nothing for adults to do, and I
assure you that was far from the truth. Most adults I saw were very
entertained trying to find alternatives for the number of mechanical devices
that malfunctioned. In fact, on future ships this could be organized into a
kind of scavenger hunt with the winner receiving a gold colored wash cloth.
Disney was clearly concerned with adult health issues. To keep adults from
overdrinking in the lounges, servers were secretly given commands to delay
the
time between drinks being served so that one had time to lose any trace of
alcohol in the bloodstream before the next order was delivered. Should one
try to escape to the cabin for a drink, one would find the mini-bars did not
work either.
Entertainment was plentiful for children and adults. One game my son and I
enjoyed was trying to see who could be the first to find room to stick his
toe in the aptly named "Goofy Pool." The tiny pool was so jammed with kids
and adults that finding space was a true challenge and just the right type
of
activity in 95-degree weather. I did hear some complain that the movies
shown in the Buena Vista Theater, like "Toy Story" and "Little Mermaid,"
were not really "first run" as the brochure promised. However, a Disney
representative ingeniously explained that this was truly the case since
this was the "first" time such movies had been "run" on this ship.
Indeed the whole ship was so entertaining that I suggest Disney dry dock the
ship and make it a permanent ride at the Magic Kingdom perhaps combined with
a showing of the movie "Titanic."
Respectfully submitted,
Chuck Reinhart

Besides Minnicruiser does anyone have any positive reviews of the first few
cruises? Are they getting the kinks worked out? We're going in April for
our first anniversary (we were supposed to go for our honeymoon) and now I'm
kind of glad that our honeymoon cruise was cancelled. It just doesn't seem
very Disney for them to produce anything that isn't up to par.
BTW, I don't mean anything personal against Minnicruiser, but she is a travel
agent and she does have an interest in selling the cruise. I love reading her
reports, but I just wanted to see if there were any positive responses from
non-travel agents.

That is true, Kathy. But as much as I love Disney, I would not want
to send anyone on the Magic if they wouldn't be pleased with it!

In defense of Minnicruiser....
As I "forward" the post from the cruise NG thought I should step in a bit
here... the post was funny but really didn't have all that many major
complaints... no wash cloths, slow drinks, a few plumbing snafus, the ship
stopped for supplies (eggs?)... lots of kids... On one hand we all expect
the best from the mouse... on the other this was a maiden or shake-down
event, we all know in the future things will be great... in the cruise NG
Minnicruiser was getting beaten upon for being a Diz employee which we
all(should) know is just not so she is a very pro-Disney Travel Agent who
sells a product manufactured by the mouse... I was in sales for years and it
is not an easy way to make a buck... You believe your supplier and pass the
word to your customer... a leap of faith, on your knees praying the factory
will come through... a delay, ouch... not meeting spec. ouch ouch... and so
on... please think Dilbert, only the pointy-haired boss has mouse ears...

Paul T. responds: It would seem a legitimate and universal concern that one's
conveyance of your potential benefit of something may be affected by the fact
that the person may stand to gain from you believing them. I, personally, get
the feeling that Minnicruzer, if given a choice, would rather be a passenger on
Disney Magic, then collecting money from someone else so "they" can be on it,
though.
I saw the tail end of a commercial yesterday, and it didn't sink in what it was
for. One of the news shows I think, and it showed Disney Magic, and some kids on
the deck playing shuffleboard. I thought "how ironic, here's this modern state
of the art, unlimited things to do Disney cruise ship, and they choose
shuffleboard for an activity to advertise." I thought this was ironic because
of several reasons. One, because shuffleboard has long been associated with
being like a "retired person's" activity, and two, because it's probably the
oldest cruise ship activity that exists. All my life, I've grown up thinking of
shuffleboard as something you do just before you die, and that they must do it
on ships because after all, your out in the middle of the ocean and there's
nothing else to do. A last resort kind of activity. Sorry, but this is "really"
how I've always thought of shuffleboard so it just didn't sit well with me when
it was part of the commercial.
But common sense tells me that the ship would certainly have plenty to keep even
the most discriminating vacationers busy. Problem is, I seem to be just a tad
short of common sense.
On a side note, did ya catch the episode of Sabrina, shot at AK? I only caught
the last half of it. It was pretty good insofar as showing some AK stuff, but
the fact that they "had a show to do" made most of the actors look totally un
interested in their surroundings. You know, they were "acting", speaking to each
other, and their eyes were always on another actor almost as if it didn't really
matter to them that they were at AK. Liked the part where Harvey was under a
spell and became an expert safari guide though, uniform and all. :-) Paul T.

I had never watched Sabrina before but I did catch the original airing of
that episode in April because I wanted to see a preview of the AK. I was
disappointed in the limited amount of actual park footage. A much better
preview of AK aired about a week later on the Wonderful World of Disney. I
taped it so my son (age 3) would have an idea of what to expect when we go in
October. He tells me he can't wait to go on "the bridge that shakes" (KS)
and the new train ride (he's already a seasoned train buff). He's also
looking forward to going inside the Tree of Life and wearing the "funny
glasses." Come to think of it, I'm looking forward to it too!

The story goes - they went to pick an opening date for TDL - including
checking weather reports going back many, many years. The latest it
had snowed was some time around the end of March. Guess what
happened on April 15, 19993?
