Thanks!
I was working in the MK on Grad Night in 1980 !!!!!
I was in an elevator with an all-male black group
that was performing. Tempations ?? I really don't
remember ever since the drugs wore off in '93
I THINK there were 4? bands total.
I do know that The Police played at what is now Cosmic Ray's in Fall of
1979 at the Mad Hatter's Ball, on their first nationwide US tour. That
would be the tour that they did in a station wagon- very low budget.
I think it wasn't possible back in the 70s and 80s for Disney to have
any sort of musical event without Kool & The Gang appearing... since
I saw them at the Mad Hatter event in '76, again at Mad Hatter in '79,
Grad Night '82, and then at a concert/party at EPCOT in 1986- one of
the few all-niter's that Disney ever held at that venue.
Oh well, nice stroll down memory lane- now back to work, it's almost
auction day and I have to get this nasty rum punch stain out of this
red satin!!!!

Heh heh. I'll assume you are talking about Grad Nite at WDW? Well.... I
also saw K.C. and the Sunshine Band during my senior year in HS. But not at
WDW. I saw them perform at a private party in DL. It was pretty cool
because they were playing on what used to be a stage on the shores of Tom
Sawyer's Island, facing New Orleans Square. 6 years later, this area gave
way to Fantasmic!
Anyhoo.... While doing some recent spring cleaning, I came across a box of
some of my HS memories. The program from my Grad Nite was in this box.
So.....
**************************************
Flashback: Grad Nite '86 at DL
**************************************
The Cost: $16.00
Dress Code: Gals.... Dress or skirt/blouse ensemble or color-coordinated
pantsuit with jacket; dress shoes, boots, or sandals. Guys....
Color-coordinated suit, dress shirt, and tie OR blazer, dress slacks, dress
shirt and tie; dress shoes or boots.
Bands Appearing: Mr. Mister, Klymaxx, Miami Sound Machine, Starpoint, Papa
Doo Run Run, Krash
You also could have one free souvenir photo taken with or without a
character.
In 1986, DL also had the very popular "Gift Giver Extraordinaire" machine
that dispensed tickets indicating whether or not you won a prize as you
entered the park. The Gift Giver was a carry-over thing from the year
before (1985), which was DL's 30th birthday year. The BIG prize giveaway
was a car. I won a souvenir pin that night. : )
Grad Nite was a lot of fun. I remember after it was over, a bunch of us
headed over to a local Denny's for breakfast.
Grad Nite has changed quite a bit since 1986. There is no more dress code.
Kids can dress casually. (I soooo wish that were true back then. Do you
know how uncomfortable it is to ride in a Matterhorn bobsled with a dress
on?!). Videopolis, where some of the rock groups played and kids could
dance, became the Fantasyland Theatre in 1995. The Tomorrowland Terrace
just became "Club Buzz" last year. However, it is still a functional stage
and dance area. Captain EO opened in 1986, Star Tours would open the
following year, and Splash Mountain didn't debut until 1989.
And on a final note.... This year (not sure about last year), the kids got
to have a pre-party at DCA *before* heading over to DL for the main event!
Disney also has been putting out a lot of cool Grad Nite merchandise these
past few years compared to the very few items that where available way back
in the stone age.
Geez. I think I am really beginning to feel old. ; )

Hey - we are in the same cohort, because I was a grad night in 86 at WDW. I
think I remember Miami Sound Machine there as well, but I don't think Mr.
Mister played there. I do remember sly fox (the one hit of "let's go all the
way") lip synching in what is now cosmic ray's (tomorrowland terrace I think
it was) - they had a stage that came up through the floor. I can't remember
who else was there though. I do remember this funny smell on tom sawyer
island, and there was something about bourban. We had about the same dress
code, and at WDW they still have a dress code for grad night, but it is
relaxed a bit. Now I see kids from out of state making a trip out of it and
going to PI before hand; we just got a ride on a school bus.

LOL.... With the exception of Miami Sound Machine and Mr. Mister, the rest
of the bands were probably 1 hit (or no hit) wonders. All I know is that
they were bands that I was not interested in then (or now). : )
And DL still has the up & down Tomorrowland Terrace stage. It was recently
re-themed as "Club Buzz." I think Barrage will be performing there this
month sometime. Yea!

>I do remember this funny smell on tom sawyer

They let you go on TSI?! I'm pretty sure it was closed during Grad Nite at
DL. It normally closes at dusk anyway. And with all of those dark caves,
I'm sure the chaperones would have had a heckuva time keeping a bunch of
teens out of trouble. ; )
>Now I see kids from out of state making a trip out of it and
>going to PI before hand; we just got a ride on a school bus.
Same here. The only way in for local kids was via school bus. But I do
know that they also bus them in from other areas of CA and AZ. Probably
other western states too. I remember one of my cousins, who lived in
Central CA, getting a mini-trip out of it. I think they also went to Six
Flags Magic Mountain or somewhere else before heading back home.
Hey, I just thought of neat idea.... Wouldn't it be cool if Disney hosted
some "Grad Nite Reunion" parties? Sort of like going to your High School
reunion (only less intimidating, perhaps... ; ). Maybe split up the
reunions by having alumni from the 70s attend one night, the 80s on another
night, etc. Or just have one big bash and invite everyone! They could make
buttons for everyone to wear that would indicate which year you attended
Grad Nite. They could also have bands playing music from those eras. (That
would probably be easier than trying to locate any of those old 1 hit wonder
bands again. LOL.)
Not sure how Disney would have people prove that they attended a Grad Nite
in a particular year. Not everyone still has their ticket stub like I do.
; ) However, all potential obstacles aside, I still think it would be a
fun thing to attend.
I would definitely pay to go to a hard-ticketed event like this. I would
just ask that we don't have to wear dressy clothes and that we don't have to
arrive via school bus. ; )
Lisa
When they sent out the info on reunion they told us it would be
$200+ per couple for the festivities. My response was that I didn't
like any of those people that much back in the day when I paid nothing
to go to school with them. And I can reasonably state that nothing
has happened in the ensuing 20 years that would change my opinion that
none of them are worth that kind of expenditure- time or money! However
I could be persuaded to go, if it were at Disney and would be fun!
However, since it's not, we're blowing it off and going to Disney
that weekend with a favorite niece. Our plan is to ride RnRC &
Twilight Zone 'til they tell us to go away! So if any of you see the
a red satin gowned Floozy on TOT, don't get confused! It's just me
and the Pirate Who Looks at 50 and Laughs- HA HA HA...having
a big time in honor of my 20 years out of High School! I guess this
means that my words to the class of '82 are...
See ya, don't want to be ya!
Hopefully some of the Disney folks will read your wonderful idea
and go Hmmmm!!!??? 'Cause that Reunion would be an E-Ticket night
for sure! Depending on the age of participant, it would be a cross
between Mickey's Not So Scary and Halloween Horror Nights.

Flash Further Back: Grad Nite '66...which could only have been at DL.
*********************************************************
The ticket:
Grad Nite at Disneyland 11 pm to 5 am
$7.00
Admission to Disneyland and Unlimited use of all rides and attractions.
Dancing*Entertainment*Grand Prize*Photo
(The grand prize was a 1966 Pontiac GTO "The number one automobile in
America.")
IMPORTANT
According to Grad Nite Committee Rules:
1. Date dresses for girls and coats and ties for gentlemen are mandatory.
Only those properly attired will be admitted.
2. Only ticket holders arriving by authorized bus transport will be
admitted.
3. No alcoholic beverages are allowed in Disneyland at any time.
The program:
June 17. 1966
Inside, a list of the 37 high schools in attendance that particular night.
They ranged from all over SoCal, Avalon to Big Bear, all the San Fernando
Valley high schools (one of which was mine, Monroe), Oxnard to Yucaipa, and
more, and more....
Next, a Message from Walt Disney, which I now find very sad, because we are
talking 1966 here...
The Association was performing at the Golden Horseshoe.
Mel Carter(?), H.B. Barnum(?), Tina and the Mustangs(?), and the Humdinger
Dancers were at 20,000 Leagues, special guests, the Womenfolk (I actually had
their only album).
Bill Elliott and the Disneyland Date Nighters were at the Plaza Gardens.
The Royal Tahitians were at the Tahitian Terrace.
The Clara Ward Singers were at the Fantasyland Theater (the original one, not
the "bra").
And lots of other groups I have no memory of (Deep Six? Hearts and Flowers?),
some groups that I think were Disney standards.
We went literally right from graduation...toss diploma to parents, cap & gown
to some official, get on the big yellow school bus. All the males were frisked
as they got off the bus, looking for flasks...it was a few years before drugs
were even thought about, and I guess no one expected the girls would sneak
anything in. I don't remember characters being at the picture location. I
just know I can't imagine ever dressing for the park like the photo shows I
did... Ran in to a million friends from other schools. My date had rarely or
never been, so there was much to show him, even back then. We tried to get in
to see the Association, but the lines were so long we gave up, having had them
perform in a free assembly at our high school (the school booked them before
their first album came out; they played a week after, when their hits were
climbing the charts. I suspect Disney had also gotten an "unknown" group when
they signed). When dawn came and it was time to get on the buses my bus had a
crisis: a missing student. All the other buses, and I don't just mean from my
school, all the other buses left and we still sat there. I think it was an
hour and a half later they found the missing guy asleep on a bench in the Hub.
We got back so late I missed the breakfast with my friends, and had to pack and
leave for my summer job that afternoon.
Ah, the things you find when you are cleaning out your parents' house for the
last time...
Wendy
LOL. I think you have made a wise decision. : ) There might have been a
few people that I wouldn't mind seeing again from HS. Very few. But, I
still think a trip to Disney would win out over going to my class reunion
any day.

Heh. If only.

Here's to Disneyfied Class Reunions!
OMG..... LOL! Okay, Wendy. You win the Flashback contest!
For some reason, I didn't think that Disney started having Grad Nites until
the early 70s. But, after a bit of research, I discovered that the first
Grad Nite was actually in 1961. Wow. Was I *way* off. It seems that not
much changed with the way Grad Nites were run over all of these years until
pretty recently.
>Next, a Message from Walt Disney, which I now find very sad, because we are
>talking 1966 here...
Definitely a very sad year. : (
>We went literally right from graduation...toss diploma to parents, cap &
gown
>to some official, get on the big yellow school bus.
I guess depending on when your school attended Grad Nite, some probably did
have to do this. Mine was a good week or two before graduation.
Cool. Thanks for sharing your Grad Nite memories, Wendy. I think it would
be kinda fun to read a timeline of memories from each year.
Anyone have any Grad Nite stories from the 70s?
Lisa
Lisa, you need to do what we've done. I really didn't, and still don't,
care about a majority of my hs classmates. Many of the people I spent time
with in hs weren't even in my class. A group of us have gotten together
and we just get together somewhere for a weekend every couple of years (and
keep in touch via email, Christmas cards, etc in between). There's people
from 4 different classes, so a reunion just isn't as much fun.

OK, off topic - last weekend, I heard this line used on TV. Hadn't heard it
before. Suddenly, here it is again! Apparently it's now having its 15
minutes of fame as part of our lexicon. So, I'm wondering - does it come
from a movie, or a song, or some part of our "contemporary culture"? Or did
it just sort of creep into usage?
Not being up on much of "popular culture", I figured I'd ask those who
certainly are better than me at it.

LOL. Not sure where the expression came from. But, I have heard it a few
times over the past few years.
Actually, I usually hear it said as..... "See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya!"
Just a minor variation of words, but it rolls off the tongue a bit easier.
: )
p.s. Lesa.... I can't find the post now, but I did read your suggestion to
me about reuniting with just a few HS friends, as opposed to going to a
reunion and seeing people that you don't really care to see. That's a great
idea. I just might pursue it some day. : )

I *think* Pee Wee Herman says that in his movies...
