What and where is this mystical "WDW Main Gate?"

I've been to WDW a number of times and have managed to get on some travel
agency spam-fax lists with just atrociously expensive vacation packages vs.
doing it yourself, which is what I always do. I keep reading about hotels
that are "2 minutes from the main gate" and "adjacent to the main gate" and
have "shuttles that run directly to the main gate." You see this same kind
of thing all over hotel descriptions on Travelocity, Expedia, etc.

In all my visits I've never figured out where that gate is at WDW. Has
anybody ever bought into this and if so, where did you find this mysterious
gate to be?

The trick to this is that there are many gates. I think each entrance into the parks could
be considered a gate. You have to remember that the road going thru Disney is about
7 miles long. There are entrance thru out the park from all directions except probably from
the north. There are at least 2 if not 3 from the East and one from the south. I'm not sure
how many from the west.

Maingate is a general reference to the entrance road to the Walt Disney
World property at the 192 Highway (Orlo Bronson Memorial Highway). It's
just a little bit west of where 192 crosses the I-4 highway.

Many years ago when Walt Disney World first opened, this was the main
entrance where cars entered the Walt Disney World property to drive
directly north to the Magic Kingdom area. All of the guest areas at
that time were pretty much clustered in the Northwest area of the property.

A number of hotels along the 192 designate themselves as Maingate east
or Maingate west, depending where they are in relation to the entrance.

For travel sales purposes, I think off-site hotels generally consider the "main
gate" to be the intersection of World Drive and 192, also known as the south
entrance. That is the original entrance to the World (when it was just MK), and
it's where the "main gate resorts" tend to be located.

Anything that says "Main Gate East" is probably down the side of 192 that has
the entrance to Celebration, abandoned tourist traps, up and running tourist
traps, Wal Mart, Publix, a lot of strip shopping malls, Cracker Barrell, etc.,
that eventually leads into "downtown" Kissimmee.

Anything that says "Main Gate West" is probably down the side of 192 that has
Splendid China, some stores, new subdivisions, lots of new construction, and
dead-ends at Hwy 27.

By the way, you are so close to Animal Kingdom resort area on the West side of
192, you can see the roofs of Animal Kingdom Lodge from the street! Maybe some
of the "Main Gate West" hotels would have a really cool view onto the Animal
Kingdom from higher floors, if there are any with more than 4 floors...

The main gate to Walt Disney World is about 3/4 of a mile down World Drive past
(or from) Rte 192. It is confusing, because Disney has many other entrances
now.

Conversely, there are rooms at the AKL that have a really cool view of
192. :-)

There is a survey marker that designates the 'main gate'. It is on
World Drive just north of Hwy 192 - and is now built up with a welcome
archway. The gate designates the edge to the Reedy Creek property and
in the beginning, when World Drive was the only way to enter the MK,
this was the "only gate" (thus "main gate). Since Reedy Creek owns 5.5
miles of World Drive right-of-way and Hwy 192 is officially 6 miles
from the start of the World Drive right-of-way, this archway should be
1/2 mile north of Hwy 192.

For those interested, the World Drive right-of-way survey markers are
all visable. Look at a map snd start from the point where World Drive
would meet the guard shack at the entrance to the MK CM parking - this
is marker zero (some of the guards know where the actual marker is).
As you head South, the one mile markers are at 'the hub' (easy to
find), the toll booths (hard to find), and then each World Drive
intersection through I-4 (ever notice that the intersections are a
mile apart ?). Just don't flatten the flowers looking for the markers
....

Yes, I remember having one a couple of years ago. :)

I didn't get a choice of rooms (it was a DRC freebee) and the room was a water
view with a lovely Old Town view.
