If you don't have enough points to cover your proposed stay, can you
use points and make up the difference in cash? Or does it have to be
totally points only or cash only?

Sort of. What you're technically doing in this case is making two
reservations—one points and one cash—and linking them together in the
system.

Okay, another question. Say you buy in at the cheapest resort like
OKW. Can you do that and never stay there? I'm guessing that means
you can't book at your non-home resort as far out as you could at your
home resort. Are there any other disadvantages? Or once you buy
points you can use them wherever and whenever you want?

I kind of thought that was how that worked.

Now this part I don't understand. So your home resort isn't OKW but
you bought extra points there? So you can buy points at any other
resort once you are in? Can you buy as few as you want or is there a
minimum? And finally, you still don't have the home resort advantage
in this case, right?

You can buy as many points as you like in as many resorts as you like,
providing you can find someone to sell them to you. If you buy direct
from Disney there's a 160- or 100-point minimum, depending on whom you
talk to. Each resort's points have home booking advantage at that
resort only. For instance, I booked our last stay at BLT more than
seven months out using BLT points. I could not have used our OKW
points for that stay unless I had booked less than seven months out.
For our big 2013 family reunion, I plan to book OKW at 11 months using
OKW points and won't be able to use our BLT points at that time.

You also have to pay attention to use year.

There's also a more recent wrinkle that lets you buy additional points
for cash. You can purchase up to 25 points in a Use Year for $15 per point.

This would come in handy of you wanted to reserve a stay, were short a
few points and either didn't have any to borrow or just didn't want to
deplete next year's stash.

I can see Patty's brain spinning by now!

Just to add that this $15 per point gets you a *one-time* use, unlike the
"traditional" DVC points that are part of your contract from year to year to
year.

This is essentially the equivalent of DVC getting into the point rental
business, and charging a premium for the confidence of dealing directly with
the company.

Nicholas via Darrell - leaving tonight for WDW, and having dinner with
Foxtrot on Sunday at 'Ohana!

I know. I find if you can sit down with someone and walk them through
it, it's really quite straightforward. Information coming in piecemeal
in multiple posts can be overwhelming.

And yes, that was my next question! I wondered if it was a one-time
only deal.

But I'm still confused about something. Say you buy in at OKW and get
150 points. You want to stay at AKL. Can you buy say 50 points for
example at AKL in a resale deal and then be able to use the 11-month
window to book there?

So this really answers my other question. You CAN buy more points to
cover the stay you are booking if you don't have enough points to do
it on a points-only basis. So rather than renting points from a DVC
member, you are renting them from Disney directly. Is there a maximum
number you can "rent?" Do they have to be in certain increments? Say
you need 132 more points than you currently own to stay with the
family in a villa. Can you rent that amount?

I'm jealous on both counts! Say hi to Charlie for me! We miss him
here! (At least I do!)

I agree, Steve. We REALLY need to have a Capital Region/Northeast
mini-meet! You are so close to me I can almost yell to you! We have
a couple of other local yokels around these parts too!

Yes - in your scenario, you are an owner at OKW with 150 points, and you are
an owner at AKV with 50 points. You can use the 11-month booking window at
both places, BUT until the 7 month mark, you can only use the points you own
AT THAT RESORT. So you could not book a 127-point reservation at AKV using
your home-resort priority.

Steve will answer this one better than I - it came into play after I was no
longer a member, but I think he said there's a fairly low limit.

Just to confuse you even more, if you find a member who isn't going to use
their points, you can *transfer* their points into your account - kind of
like renting, except that you now control the points, again as a one-time
deal. They will come with the same home-resort restrictions and expiration
conditions that they had when in the other owner's account. Some owners
prefer to transfer to other members, rather than rent to potential
strangers.

There is a maximum purchase of 25 point per use year. As Nicholas
pointed out, they are one-time points for that year only. In your
example, you can NOT buy an additional 132 points. You CAN borrow 132
from next year (or a combination of borrow and purchase under the
guidelines).

I don't drink but knock yourself out! What's central for us?
Latham? Crossgates? Clifton Park?

Couldn't you also rent points from another member? Or would that make it
two separate reservations?

Yes, you could. It would be two reservations unless you could transfer
the points from account to account.

Renting directly from DVC is a convenience when you only need a few
points (25 or less) for a reservation. I would guess most DVCers are
trying to rent larger amounts.
