Prior to my one day trip to the studios last week, I stopped at Best Buy to
get some batteries and came out with a new laptop. The problem is...it has
windows 7 on it and I hate it. Few of my favorite programs work on it. I
need suggestions for a new email program. I used outlook express and loved
it but it won't work on the 64 bit system. I tried Thunderbird but it work
on my news server. I tried Microsoft Outlook but it won't do newsgroups.
Windows Live Mail isn't user friendly to this user. Does anyone have
suggestions as to an email program that is really easy and also does
newsgroups?

You need to download the free "Windows Live Essentials" package from
Microsoft.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/e-mail-calendar-photo-and-video-programs-for-windows-7

"Some programs that were included in Windows Vista and Windows XP
aren't included in Windows 7. You can install similar products from
other companies, or you can use Windows Live Essentials, a set of free
programs you download and install on your computer running Windows
7." (more)

Thanks for the suggestion but I already have that. That's where Live mail
comes from.

Some other advice...

http://helpmerick.com/windows-7-email-options.htm

Apparently, there may be firewall issues with Thunderbird (that can be
resolved):
http://www.visiondesign.com/blog/2009/11/17/windows-7-alternative-options-for-email-photo-editing/

"Keep in mind, Windows 7 comes with a more robust integrated firewall
than its predecessors. If you plan to use Thunderbird or another email
client, you will need to configure the firewall to allow mail to go
through."

I'm shocked, but Microsoft seems to have a page offering help to
Thunderbird users:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Details.aspx?type=Software&p=Mozilla%20Thunderbird&v=Mozilla&uid=2&pf=0&pi=1&c=Communication%20%26%20Internet&sc=Web%20Browsers%20%26%20Plug-ins&os=32-bit

I really think that you should give Thunderbird another try.

Also, windows 7 is supposed to have an "XP compatibility flag" you can
use that might help with your non-running programs, although maybe it's
not on all versions of 7?

Sorry to here about your troubles...

I have been using Windows 7 since October and have not had any problems with
it. Although it did take a bit to get used to the new features also if you
look at the settings deep enough you can set everything so it looks and acts
just like Windows Vista. Only 1 or 2 programs that don't run without
setting the Compatibility flag to Windows XP SP3.
Also no problems with Windows Live Essentials... it even imported my Outlook
Express settings and mail when I upgraded.

I've been using Windows 7 for a while now, since the beginning of the
year, with the first beta release. I've had no issues with it at all,
except for a screen wake-up problem on my laptop. I use Thunderbird for
newsgroups, but I use the full-blown version of Outlook for e-mail.

I'm surprised. I've been using Windows Live Mail for a few months now
- for both email and usenet. There was a bit of a learning curve on
the front end but I've found it very easy to work with. It's great for
managing multiple email accounts, folders, different usenet groups,
etc.

I'm one of the first to get it here at the University and I don't mind it.
I use Windows Live for newsgroups and so far it's been OK. Now I had to
get someone in my department conversant in geek-speak to set it up for me
but it's been fine.

I agree, I also find the Calendar feature excellent.

I have Thunderbird running on Windows 7 64-bit with no problems.
