"The first wallaby sighting came last week, with an area resident
reporting she saw a small kangaroo-like creature hopping across Bauer
Road near Route 512. Police laughed it off after beating the bushes for
a few hours. "Who would have a wallaby?" they asked.

But when Varkanis nearly ran it over with his car less than a mile away,
police changed their tune. Since then, officers have prowled fields and
woods in search of the creature, known for its tan coloring and powerful
hindquarters.

...

They've put in calls to the Lehigh Valley Zoo for advice and have
canvassed area animal owners to see if anyone has lost a pet. No one has
fessed up.

No one in Northampton or Lehigh counties has a license to keep a
wallaby, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. But unlicensed
pets are common, officials admit."

About 1980 or so, I was driving up to the 1000 Islands on route 104.
Somewhere between Mexico, NY and Interstate 81, I saw "something" HOP across
the road, ahead of me.
I turned to my step-son (age 16) and asked "did you see that"?
He said "yes, it looked like a kangaroo".
I never heard of a kangaroo loose in the area but if it was only locally
reported, I would have never known.
To this day, if we bring it up, everyone accuses us of being drunk or high.
(we were neither)
