I wonder if anybody could help me...

I teach Btech Media Studies in London, and one of the Topics
for my students is Disney.

The current assignment is to comment on
Intertextuality (i.e. making scenes with ideas
borrowed from other films, places or current events).
We are using Aladdin as the specific example.

I would appreciate any comments on the following,
namely your opinions, or if you have recognised any
characters or elements:

- Origins: Aladdin doesn't seem to be placed at a
specific location, but more like as a combination of
recognisable 'Eastern' locations and references. How
many different 'countries' are represented?

- Image and sound references to other Disney films,
which ones?

- References to current events and situations
(political etc), which ones?

- References to personalities, actors, famous people
etc ( I did recognise Jack Nicholson in one scene..)

-Any geographical/character inconsistencies?

I am sorry if this sounds like class work!!! But you
will be saving me a lot of work (for an overloaded
teacher) especially having to watch the video over
and over!!!!.

I suppose you will all deserve honorary BTechs in
Media Studies for your efforts!!

Thanks very Much

Just a question about a particular scene.
In the scene where the Genie is introducing himself to aladdin, he
explains the rules of the three wishes, during this, Genie changes so he
looks liek some one in particular. Who is this person, Is he an American
Game show host???

The Genie does several impressions in this sequence. "There are a few
provisos, a few quid pro quo..." was lawyer and right-wing commentator
William F. Buckley. The black-and-white character with the cigar (and the
duck) was comedian and game show host Groucho Marx. "Right here, direct from
the lamp, for your verymuch wish fullfillment..." was variety show host Ed
Sullivan.

Before the "Prince Ali" song, when the sultan is playing with
a lot of little toys, you can see that one of these toys
is the Beast (on the left of the tower he made)
