Mary Wickes is best known as a character actress -- am uncertain of her
exact on-screen credits, but they are listed on the disney.com website.
Disney.com paid tribute to Mary Wickes in their online pre-HoND-release
publicity. Ms. Wickes did pass away during production of the film that
brings her to us as "Laverne" the gargoyle.
Margaret Hamilton is known for her performance of Miss Gulch and the
Wicked Witch of the West in MGM's "The Wizard of Oz" starring Judy
Garland as Dorothy.

Mary Wickes played the old cratchedy woman (grandmother?) in "Little
Women" from 1994.

Mary Wickes, who recently passed away, was not the woman who played the
wicked witch in in the Wizard of Oz. Her most recent live action work was
in Touchstone Pictures' "Sister Act" and "Sister Act 2", where she played
Sister Mary Lazarus, the older nun who was the original choir leader
before Whoopi Goldberg takes over.

Mary Wickes is best known as the grouchy nun in Sister Act. No she did
NOT play the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz.

No, Margaret Hamilton played the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard
of Oz (and Miss Gulch too, of course!). Mary Wickes was a character
actress who appeared in many films and musicals. Perhaps her most
well-known recent roll was in Sister Act and Sister Act 2. She was the
older nun who taught the nun's choir in the first of those two films.
Sadly, she passed away just before completing her role in HoND and
another actress (who's name I can't remember just now) finished the part
for her (just 6 lines).
Hope this helps.

Mary Wickes was in Sister Act, as the choir mistress before Whoopi
Goldberg. :)

Mary Wickes, though a prolific character actress, was not in 'The Wizard of Oz'. The actress who
portrayed the Wicked Witch of the West was Margaret Hamilton.

It's a fantastic reference - look up (practically) everything related to film.

Although I am not at all familiar with Mary Wickes' lengthy career, I do
know that it does span many decades and I am sure that she has litterally
hundreds of movie and TV credits to her name. She seems to often play
character parts and has does so extremely well. One of my favorite shows
that she is in is "White Christmas" with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye (she
works the front desk at the Inn). Also another favorite show that Mary is
in is the old original "Annette" serial that Disney produced, Mary Wickes
plays the aunt to Annette Funicello (sp?). Another long running and more
recent work she has done was on the "Father Dowling Mysteries" that also
starred Tom Bosley (who is now playing the part of Belle's father in BATB
in LA). In this series Mary played the part of the "rectory cook". She had
a terrific career and I was saddened to learn that she recently passed
away.

I wish I'd said this. Animation is an art form and, unfortunately,
more culturally vested as a kid's medium than otherwise in this country.
I've never understood that. Likewise, folks shouldn't trip on the idea
that an 'adult' cartoon means 'Fritz the Cat' either. I think the point
is that the Hunchback is obviously a suitable story for the medium. But
when it's forced into the 'Disney mold' it's best moments remain too
fleeting. Meanwhile, it bends over backward to be cute and child-friendly
and less dynamic as a result.... Oh yeah, "IMHO"!
I've got my fingers crossed for Fantasia II.

I was real surprised to see in the credits that Jane Withers was the
actress who helped to finish Laverne's dialog. She's another actress who
has been around for quite awhile. She started as a child star in the
1930s, appearing in several Shirley Temple movies (usually as a loud,
bullyish type).
According to the soundtrack liner notes, another person doubled for
some of Laverne's lines in "A Guy Like You" as well.

I think Mary Wickes played Mrs. Cathcart, a lovelorn spinster on the old
"DEnnis the Menace" tv show. (Unless it was Jane Withers, who was also in
Huchback, but as who?)
