Today's Family Circus isn't from 1979, it's even farther back in the past.

It was originally published on August 18, 1973. On that day:

I was eight years old
The Cincinnati Post was still running Li'l Abner and Pogo (both would be gone from the paper later that year)
It cost eight cents to mail a letter
Pro soccer was at Nippert Stadium (it didn't return until this year
On TV that night: All in the Family, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Mission: Impossible (kids, it was a TV show), Emergency!
The Cincinnati Reds were battling the LA Dodgers for supremacy in the National League West

That 1973 recycled strip might be related as a follow up from Billy going to camp 1979 redeaux arc just like yesterday's Dolly in a tent strip.

And that August 18, 1973 Family Circus strip recycled in 2016 followed a 1973 arc where the family went to camp (and Dad Keane started to temporary sport a mustache that he shaved off a few weeks after the 1973 camp arc).

KEEPING UP WITH THE RECYCLING FAMILY CIRCUS THEME:

Today's August 14, 2016 (except for Thel's hair) is a recycled Sunday from 1984 at the time of the Summer Olympics. The best quote in it: "Why do they keep showing those five hula hoops?"

> Today's August 14, 2016 (except for Thel's hair) is a recycled Sunday from 1984 at the time of the Summer Olympics. The best quote in it: "Why do they keep showing those five hula hoops?"

Original date was August 5, 1984.

Quotes dropped from original:

"Our coach had some 'lympic tickets, but I haven't seen him in the stands" (The 1984 games were in L.A., not far from the Keanes' home base in Arizona as opposed to Rio)

"Shouldn't we be wearin' the Olympic T-shirts Grandma sent us?"

"This is comin' from L.A. so maybe the Raiders will be playin' in it." (if this year's Olympics were in L.A., they could've easily subbed Raiders for Rams)

New quotes:

"Are the medals solid gold or do they have chocolate inside?"

"Betcha I could win a Gold medal if they had Hopscotch."

"Was that the same torch the Statue of Liberty carries?"

1984 was the last time ABC aired a Summer Olympics. All Summer Games from 1988 onward aired on NBC.

ABC was the only place you could watch the Games then. You never couid tell what sport was going to be shown. I remember seeing (team) handball on the first Sunday - AND I NEVER KNEW IT WAS A OLYMPIC SPORT, much less an actual sport.

ABC completely ignored soccer during the LA Games; they only put it on for about a half (over 20 minutes).

Four years earlier in Summer 1980 NBC signed on to carry the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Russia but withdrew their plans as the USA boycotted the games because of possible Afganistan invasion of Russia.

Get your facts straight:

The US boycotted the Moscow Games due to the Soviets invading Afghanistan. NBC got the games in 1977 (and I remember it being on the cover of Sports Illustrated).

I got for Christmas that year a Guinness book of facts and figures for the 1980 Summer and Winter Olympics, which had a schedule of both the Lake Placid and Moscow games.

Belated: A week ago on September 20, 2016 I saw a Family Circus comic strip with recycled art from 1974 except for Thel's hair tweeked where Billy was saying "Daddy just yawned and we are sharing it". The original in 1974 went "Daddy just yawned and we are passing it around."

Today's Family Circus strip (9/28/16) is another recycled art strip, this time from March 29, 1976 (six years to the day later, Judge Parker would be infamously dropped by the E----r).

The original caption was:

Jeffy: "Mommy, will you show Daddy how we tie my laces in a double knot?"

Monday's strip was recycled, too. Except for a tweak to Thel's hair. the art was the same as from November 3, 1973.

The original caption was:

Jeffy: "Mommy, you're so good at takin' care of kids, I bet you could even get a job as a BABY SITTER!"

Given the fact that FC has used recycled art (with tweaks) in the last two weeks, I wonder if Jeff Keane is on vacation, is ill or has some other things to take care of. With all the FC recycling and what happened with the last few years of Apartment 3-G, the question has to be raised: Does King Features have an editor anymore?

I wonder if some paper gets wind of this, and as a result announces that it won't carry FC anymore. (Then again, that paper might still run a comic whose artist has been dead since 2000, or one by a woman who stopped drawing her strip in 2007, or one has been in daily reruns for the last several years, as Doonesbury or Get Fuzzy fans can attest.)

The Tampa Bay Times and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette certainly fall in the "all of the above" category. The deceased Tampa Tribune fell in the opposite category (save for "Get Fuzzy").

The New York Daily News stopped carrying Family Circus daily in 2003-2004 and Sunday in 2010-2011 prior to the 2011 reducing the 3 pages of comics to 2 pages purge.

The Chicago Sun-Times stopped carrying Family Circus in late August 2011 to make room for Lio.

Li'l Abner was still in the Cincinnati Post (it would be dropped three weeks later, on November 5 - Funky Winkerbean would join the Post the following week)

The Oakland A's and New York Mets were tied 1-1 in the World Series (day off)
On TV: The Miami Dolphins (defending Super Bowl VII champions - 17-0!) took on the Cleveland Browns on Monday Night Football; CBS aired a Peanuts special - no, it wasn't about pumpkins. it was "You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown", plus the Country Music Association Awards (Johnny Cash hosted!)

We have a circa 1973 recycled art for Family Circus for October 27, 2016 featuring Thel and Kittycat:
ORIGINAL: "Sorry, it's just a can of peaches."

Actually, that was from November 11, 1972.

To illustrate how long ago it was:

The US was still sending to the moon (Apollo 17, the final moon mission, happened the following month)
The Cincinnati Reds lost the World Series in seven games to the Oakland A's the previous month
The Cincinnati Royals of the NBA were playing basketball...this time, as the Kansas City-Omaha Kings
Apple and Microsoft had not been founded

And there's more Nixon-era FC recycling today, as it was originally run (with a tweak to Thel's hair) from November 16, 1972.

The caption was almost identical to the original, which was:

Jeffy: "Picture books are better than television 'cause you don't miss anything when you go to the bathroom."

Today's FC is recycled art from October 31, 1977 with two tweaks:

Thel's hair
Dolly is reading a Star Wars book.

The original caption was:
Thel: "How good are you at creating droid costumes? Billy wants to dress up as See-threepio, Jeffy wants to be Artoo-Detoo..."

IN case anyone at the Keane Kompound has heard, Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a monster hit last Christmas.

So, D Heine was right in saying that FC would recycle Halloween strips, and they were right. It also means that all this week's daily strips were recycled from the 1970s.

In the new tweaked art and rewording:
* The book is a costume making book Dolly is reading instead of a Star Wars book.
* Pokemon creatures - Charizard and Pikachu - are mentioned. Despite the Pokemon Go craze, wasn't Pokemon popular around 1998-2000's?

They’ve been producing new games and new episodes of the TV series
without a break, and they’re still making new Pokémon movies, though
they no longer play in US cinemas. They also produce, from time to time,
new-tech versions of the older games. Pokémon isn’t the world-shattering
craze it was in the 90s, but it’s been very much alive and well for a
full generation.

And, as Pokemon-illiterate as I am, it appears Jeffy and P.J. are wearing these exact outfits for Today's (10/30) Halloween strip (and adult Jeff had to bring the Presidential Election up in the form of Billy and Dolly's outfits - Billy as Trump, Dolly as Hillary).

Today's Family Circus is recycled art from even farther back... October 21, 1970.

Tweaks were done to Bill (he had no glasses in the original) and Thel's hair. The original caption was:
Billy: "There were TWELVE doughnuts here when we went to bed - now there there are TEN!"

What was happening on October 21, 1970?

The Baltimore Orioles had defeated the Cincinnati Reds to win the World Series earlier that month (and kiddies - all the games were played in the daytime!)
The Reds had opened Riverfront Stadium on June 30, and had hosted the All-Star Game there (no one ever thought then that there would be no more Riverfront Stadium in 2016)
It cost 6 cents to mail a letter
Life and Look magazines were still being published
In the NBA, the Oscar Robertson-less Cincinnati Royals played the Baltimore Bullets
FC was in the Cincinnati Post...and Times-Star

At least it wasn't post Halloween related for the twelve to ten donuts.

I noticed for the Sunday, November 13, 2016 Family Circus comic strip it is a mix of new art where Billy or Jeffy asks Dad Keane why he wears glasses and then a thought balloon is shown showing a past 1971 Sunday Family Circus strip (even with Thel's old hairstyle with no tweak in art!) where Dad takes Billy to an eye doctor but then the Dad gets his own eye exam - Says Billy, "My eyes are okay, but Daddy's getting glasses on Tuesday". It was in 1971 Dad Keane started to wear glasses in the Family Circus.

Just so somebody other than Brian can pinpoint exact FC originals...

The strip featured in the thought balloon was from July 11, 1971. Two days later (a Tuesday), Daddy officially began wearing glasses.

Kinda odd that the real Bil Keane AFAIK always did wear glasses but it took him over a decade for his comic strip counterpart to start wearing them.

Wait until the month of December 2016 when some Family Circus Christmas strips 1970's-1990's get recycled!

And yep, we are now getting to Christmas themed Family Circus strips recycled: Today's December 1, 2016 Family Circus has a new caption on the bottom going with an old pic originally from 1973-1974. The original caption from 1973-1974 was "Do we have to be good for two weeks or three?"

CORRECTION: I guess the "Do we have to be good for two weeks or three?" Family Circus cartoon was from 1977-1978, not 1973-1974.

Today's FC was reworked from December 7, 1983.

Changes were:

The TV was changed.

The news reporter (?) had a "75 Years" in the background. He didn't have a background 33 years earlier.

Jeffy looked to be wide-eyed in 1983, but is sullen in 2016.

Today's FC had retouched or redone art from December 6, 1990.

The original caption was different:

Thel: "I have just run out of patience!"
Jeffy: "Don't worry, Mommy. I'll be your patient."

Not only was Thel's hair tweaked, but the 2016 strip has a speech balloon (which was not in the 1990 strip), but Thel's stunned expression touched the circle in the 2016 (it wasn't back then).

You didn't make mention if the December 8, 2016 Family Circus (featuring Dolly resting Kittycat - their pet cat - on her lap) is new art or recycled art.

I looked around, and I didn't see any recycled art.

Today's FC (12/12/16) used recycled art from December 13, 1975. The dialogue was the same with the family's last name changed (it was the Lanes in the original).

Going back to the recycled FC strips, today's sttip used tweaked art from December 19, 1980 - 36 years ago today.

Changes were: In the 1980 strip, Bill, Thel, Sam, Barfy and the melonheads appear.
In 2016, Bill and one of the dogs are missing (and Thel's hair was tweaked).

The original caption:
Thel: "It's the best tree we've ever had."

No mention of recycled Family Circus strips lately on the Christmas theme, but:
1) For the December 22, 2016 FC strip I think it was recycled from 1986 with a new Christmas carol sung by Jeffy his way: Instead of "Dashin' through the snow, in a one horse soapin' sleigh" from Decemeber 1986 this time it's "Joy to the world, the lord has gum.." Has this even been recycled before with anouter Christmas carol sung by Jeffy circa 2011-2012?
2) For the December 23, 2016 FC strip it's a recycled December 1975 strip with a new caption replacing "These aren't real carolers, one of them is Linda's mother".

Actually, Billy sang that in 1986.

December 19, 1975.

Actually, the December 23, 1977 FC had the same situation and some altered dialogue from today. Bil, Thel, two of the pets and the kids are watching carolers, and Billy says:

"When they're finished singin', do we just smile or clap or what?"

And the December 27, 2016 Family Circus strip featured recycled art from late December 1975 (with a tweak of Thel's hair) and a new caption. I think the original went: "Wow, Grandma, I guess this is a present I can play with and not wear it."

You are right, D. Heine!

Today's FC was recycled from December 31, 1971. Thel's hair was tweaked AGAIN!
Jeffy's calendar had part of "9" and the number 72.

The original caption was changed. It was:

Jeffy: "I just wanted to know if it's New Year's yet so I could put up my cllendar."

That means, in 45 years, the melonheads have not aged a day - unlike the rest of us. I think they're gonna watch Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians while they park their new 1972 Pintos, Vegas and Karmann Ghias.

And they were reading FC in the Pittsburgh Press, Washington Star, Cleveland Press,Philadelphia Bulletin, and the Cincinnati Post [and Times-Star], which last ran nine years ago today.

I hope that 2017 will see more new FC art. (BTW, Bil Keane's granddaughter, Claire, has done a new book called Little Big Girl. It was released back in November.)
