About time somebody noted Bernice's sarcasm.

About time someone lampshaded the long, winding road to nowhere that
Luann's "love life" is. (And how she never seems to shut up about it.)

I much prefer the Brad and Toni story-line, as languid as it is- at
least there is a sense of character development.

Hey, this has possibilities, y'know. We've got two friends
who are on the outs. Tired, and justifiably, of each other's
same-old same-old. I don't know yet, but the writing has
been so good lately that it could end up as a storyline
about how friends grow and change -- or one does and
the other doesn't -- and either the friendship grows with
them or they can't maintain it.

Or it could be about 16-yr-old romantic prospects which,
yeah, are hard to make interesting if they have to stay 16
forever. That would be a writing challenge, but i can't
call it impossible till i see where it goes.

As I probably noted the last 2-3 times we had this discussion- that is
how 16 YO girls really act (assuming they are not jumping right in the
sack, of course.) At that age, everything is profound and earth-shaking.

As the father of a 16YO daughter, I certainly can attest to that!

The plausibility of Luann's actions are pretty much neutralized by the
fact that we've seen it over and over and F*CKING OVER, with the only
difference this time is that she's talking about Gunther.

That makes it more plausible not less. As long as Luann remains forever 16,
this is how she'll behave, just like Dennis and Calvin will be jerks, and
Charlie Brown a nebbish, who will *never* kick that football ..

There's a rumor going around that this story line is laying the
groundwork for a bold new departure in the strip, to be retitled "Luno"
(Luanne's new nickname), in which she finally hooks up with nebbish
Gunther and pregnant hilarity ensues.

I have had three sixteen year old daughters (at different times) and
I have never noted any particular resonance between Luann and them.
Maybe I'm just lucky. Or unobservant.

The teen girls at our church youth group are always having one emotional
crisis or another. One day/week/minute they will be stalking off to
separate corners of the gym or refusing to show up in the same building
at all; next thing you know they're tearfully hugging, literally leaping
into one another's arms and repeating how much they love each other. One
Sunday morning they stood together in front of the congregation and made
a big speech about how much they had learned about forgiveness; nobody
ever did figure out what they felt the need to forgive one another for,
but that was two years ago and nothing has really changed in their
interactions since then.

The guys just keep playing basketball and dodgeball, sometimes hurting
one another by playing too rough, sometimes returning the hurt a little
too aggressively to get back at each other, but they never stop the game
or stop sharing Skittles over it.
