That's funny! I got it right away... sent to my 53 year old mother and
she didn't get it... Guess she wasn't a Police fan; haha

Enh. I like the pun strips OK, but I miss the character riffs and
extended arcs he used to do. Things like the little dog on the chain
and rat's cross-country drive.

It is a pun on the line of an extremely popular and famous song by a
musical group called "The Police" whose lead singer, Sting, featured in
the movie, "Dune" sang about 'his' prostitute partner, "Roxanne". That
should be enough for you to re-read the cartoon.

Oh.

There are puns that are funny, and there are puns that are lame.

Do the rocks have anything to do with the red light?

No - Roxanne is a prostitute, in many western societies prostitution and
allied trades are plied in the re-light district.

Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light
Those days are over
You don't have to sell your body to the night
Roxanne
You don't have to wear that dress tonight
Walk the streets for money
You don't care if it's wrong or if it's right
Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light
Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light
Roxanne (Put on the red light)
Roxanne (Put on the red light)
Roxanne (Put on the red light)
Roxanne (Put on the red light)
Roxanne (Put on the red light)
I loved you since I knew you
I wouldn't talk down to you
I have to tell you just how I feel
I won't share you with another boy
I know my mind is made up
So put away your make up
Told you once I won't tell you again
It's a bad way
Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light
Roxanne
You...

Cheers,
Gary B-)

It made me laugh, because I know the song well. With these types of
puns, it's not funny unless you get it right away. Once explained
later, it's not as fun.

First verse of "Roxanne" by Sting and The Police:

"Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light
Those days are over
You don't have to sell your body to the night
Roxanne
You don't have to wear that dress tonight
Walk the streets for money
You don't care if it's wrong or if it's right"
https://www.songfacts.com/lyrics/the-police/roxanne

"This song is about a man who falls in love with a prostitute and gets
all Pretty Woman on her, telling her she deserves better and should find
a more decent profession. Sting got the idea after walking through the
red-light district of Paris when the band was in town to play a club
called The Nashville, where he saw prostitutes for the first time. He
imagined what it would be like to fall in love with one of them,
figuring some of them must have boyfriends."
https://www.songfacts.com/facts/the-police/roxanne

The final frame of the comic is Rat saying "... Sting" and the artist
saying "Don't Stand So Close To Me" which is another Sting and The
Police song.

So the whole lengthy strip relies on knowledge of an old rock song's lyrics?

Whenever I walk past a rock-mulched flower bed, I find pebbles all
over the walkway.

I usually kick one or two back where they belong.

Pastis seems to have figured out that some people (like myself)
don't like the pun strips and would prefer to skip them, so he
makes them easy to detect. If the first panel seems "weird,"
then I will quickly glance over to see if Pastis (the character)
appears in the final panel. If he does then I skip the strip
and don't bother reading any further.

I haven't read the strip regularly in years, but I remember that the
whole conceit of these pun strips (a regular feature) is that they are
extremely contrived, and finally, rat will threaten to punish the author
in all the readers' place for creating such an abomination.

So they have to be bad.

I didn't know the song well enough, but I'll send a link to my friend
Roxanne, who will know it willy-nilly.
