"The [Fort Worth] Star-Telegram has been running
Doonesbury since Oct. 26, 1970. We were one of only
28 newspapers that picked up the strip from Day One."

The Star-Telegram is dropping the daily Doonesbury
after 43 years. Also: "With Doonesbury leaving,
we've decided to also drop Mallard Fillmore daily."

Both strips ran on the ed-op pages and the paper
"has decided to replace them by running two single-panel
political cartoons Monday through Saturday --
one predominantly conservative and the other liberal."

The Star-Telegram IS taking this change as an
opportunity to do a comics survey (linked in the
article), wanting opinions on an impressive 41
comics that I assume they run in the paper.

The Minneaplois Star Tribune will run the Flashbacks,
but their article gives a bit more detail on what will run.
For the reruns, "we're going deep, literally back to
Day One," [Trudeau] said, "revisiting four weeks of
strips from every year of syndication ... [and] focusing
on how the characters got involved with one another."

Also" "We'll be including some of the more
controversial strips," Trudeau said, "although
these will be mostly character-centered, not
strips about long-ago political events that a
contemporary audience might not be familiar with."
http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/247864541.html

The Toronto Star is asking readers to help choose
a replacement for Doonesbury reprints. I like their
online article because it shows a couple of nice
unseen (by me) promo posters for Dustin and Pickles.

The Tampa Tribune (no surprise) confirmed they're replacing "Doonesbury" with "Rhymes with Orange" starting Monday.

http://tbo.com/lifestyle/doonesbury-will-no-longer-run-daily-in-the-tribune-20140302/

The Concord Monitor is adding "Pickles" as a "Doonesbury" replacement

http://www.concordmonitor.com/home/10702352-95/doonesbury-departs-the-daily-comics-page

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is keeping Doonesbury

http://www.post-gazette.com/ae/art-architecture/2014/03/02/Trudeau-to-take-break-from-Doonesbury/stories/201403020044

As is the Palm Beach Post

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/entertainment/get-ready-for-a-retro-doonesbury/ndcyN/

The Knoxville News-Sentinel will keep Doonesbury as well.

Also...

The Buffalo News is adding "Close To Home" in place of "Doonesbury".

The Johnstown (PA) Tribune-Democrat is replacing both "Doonesbury" and "For Better Or For Worse" with "Shoe" (?!?) and "Rhymes With Orange" respectively.

The Ventura County Star has dropped both "Doonesbury" and "Mallard Fillmore" from their editorial page replacing neither strip (so is the Tulsa World in Oklahoma).

On a different story, the Florence Morning News (S.C.) is pulling next Sunday's Doonesbury strip due to censorship issues. They haven't said anything about running or dropping the daily strips. As for next Sunday's strip, they'll explain the situation on Tuesday.

A few more updates.

The San Francisco Chronicle will run Doonesbury repeats but they are cancelling "For Better Or For Worse" in favor of "Rose Is Rose".

The Columbus (OH) Dispatch is replacing "Doonesbury" with "Frazz".

And while doing research here is a letter to the editor to the Newport News (VA) Daily Press. Get a load of this...

"*Mary, Gloucester: Concerning Doonesbury : old Doonesbury is better than no Doonesbury . I don't understand why the kid with the tiger -- I can't think of his name -- why they didn't do back issues of him"

Looks like the Daily Press isn't running Doonesbury based on the editor's reply but you forgot about "Calvin and Hobbes" already?!? Sheesh.

The Tampa Bay Times (my newspaper) is going with Doonesbury Classics.

The Orlando Sentinel is still running Doonesbury as is the Los Angeles Times and Washington Post.

The Chicago Tribune is replacing Doonesbury with Animal Crackers (which replaced Doonesbury during its' last hiatus).

The Philadelphia Inquirer replaced Doonesbury with Wumo a week early.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch replaced Doonesbury with Lola.

Bloomington (IL) Pantagraph replaced Doonesbury with Pearls Before
Swine. (Two sentence note on front page.)

Peoria (IL) Journal Star is running the reprints with just "Doonesbury"
as the title.

(Neither ran the Sunday.)

Today marks 28 years since the Cincinnati Post added Calvin and Hobbes, along with four others.

The Post dropped Rose is Rose and replaced it with Moderately Confused eleven years ago. You probably knew that from the Post Comic Strip Index Retro.

At the risk of getting off track Brian, how close are we to finishing up the Cincinnati Post Index?

Back on topic, add the Citrus County (FL) Chronicle as picking up Doonesbury Classic.

The Seattle Times has also suspended Doonesbury in the print edition;
the on-line comics section retains it without appending (Classic) or
(Flashback).

Simultaneously, Get Fuzzy was dumped and replaced by Wumo. Oddly, Wumo
appears on the page in the approximate location of Doonesbury rather
than Get Fuzzy's prior location.

A little late but The San Francisco Chronicle
made up for that loss by picking it up this week
(dropping For Better or For Worse reprints).

I thought the Tampa Bay Times made up for it by adding "Rose" a few months after its' Cincinnati run in 2003 (the Tampa Tribune apparently has run "Rose" from the beginning in 1984).

The Roanoke (Va.) Times is running Classic Doonesbury, but has not provided a magnifying glass to its subscribers. Since the paper is narrower (saves newsprint) and the current comics page has the smaller comics, Classic Doonesbury is reduced from its original size so it will fit with the rest of the page.

In article <e33f48fd-98e2-4f5f...@googlegroups.com>,
Didn't he once have a contract that forbid altering the size? I seem
to remember it was kind of a big deal at the time. Of course they might
figure he altered the terms by not providing new content..

Thirty years ago, as Trudeau returned from his first sabbatical,
he demanded that newspapers run his daily strip 44 picas wide.
Not all newspaper editors took that well:
http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=799&dat=19850222&id=T7lPAAAAIBAJ&sjid=nlEDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6324,4919467

and

or http://tinyurl.com/krtv3ug

Five years ago The Washington Post shrunk the strip
and Michael Cavna sought how that was possible
given the size restrictions Trudeau had demanded:
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/comic-riffs/2009/10/doonesbury_shrinkage.html
Comic strip, and any other, demands don't
have much pull in a failing industry.

Some fellow cartoonists didn't appreciate Trudeau's
grab for acreage in 1984, as some didn't like it when
Bill Watterson tried it with the Sunday Funnies later:
