Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder is a
controversial figure in superhero movies despite not being actively
involved in creating them for several years. However, his work is a
direct inspiration for The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke's take on his
new show's violent, arrogant heroes.

In the world of The Boys, created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson,
a group of violent, sociopathic superheroes called The Seven run
rampant - even greenlighting their own blockbuster movie deals through
their financial backers, a corporation called Vought. It's through
these movies-within-a-show that Kripke says the 'Snyder' aesthetic
comes out.

“Every time they make a superhero thing, they’re making a Zack Snyder
movie,” Kripke told EW. “In the stuff that Vought makes, we were
inspired more by DC than Marvel. The Marvel stuff is actually
reasonably grounded, but the DC stuff tends to get a little
pretentious, and we wanted the Vought superhero movies to be a little
full of themselves.”

“From Garth and [artist] Darick [Robertson], I think even at that time,
they were more interested in taking shots at DC than they were at
Marvel,” he continued. “I think, even then, DC people were held up as
these gods whereas the Marvel heroes were always regular people.”

However, Kripke says his focus isn't on specifically lampooning DC or
Zack Snyder, but on taking shots at the dominance of superhero culture
on the whole.

“We’re probably way more towards taking shots at Marvel,” Kripke
opined, stressing the nature of Disney and Marvel Studios' high profile
in popular culture and movies. “Marvel’s real and the superheroes they
have are real and they’ve taken over the world and that’s the show.”

The Boys premieres July 26 on Amazon.
