The Collected Box Office Poison Volume 1
(Yay! Another volume for my bookshelf. Anyone want to buy the original issues?)
Box Office Poison is the story of a frustrated writer, his obnoxious
girlfriend, and a wannabe comic artist working with a Golden Age has-been, so
just about everyone around here should be able to find something to relate to
in it. :)
ARROW COMICS
Arrow Anthology 5
I'm not sure how they can determine issue 4 is a success when it hasn't been
released yet, but I have to admire optimism. As always, I buy this for Simone &
Ajax, but in this issue, I'll get a chance to sample Cray Baby as well.
COLLAGE
Get Real 1
Life and loves among high school students, and from the cover gag, it looks
like this new title might be an Archie for the 90s.
DC COMICS
JLA in Crisis Secret Files 1
I'm just looking forward to the firestorm this is sure to cause among those who
love continuity, as long as it's THEIR version. :)
Resurrection Man 1 (2nd printing) and Supergirl 1 (3rd printing)
I don't recall seeing reprints being this available previously, and if this
marks a new policy, I'm all for it. Why shouldn't important issues be kept in
print?
DREAMSMITH STUDIOS
Tranquility 1
I had the pleasure of reading a Tranquility ashcan a couple of years ago, and I
recommend it. A woman and her talking gun (no, it's not an Amanda & Gunn
ripoff) survive the seedy side of a corrupted world with humor. And the art's
great!
HELIKON COMICS
Galaxion 7
Oooh! Answers to the missing ship mystery!
IMAGE COMICS
Gen13 33
John Arcudi and Gary Frank are doing a terrific job with this teen team, and
this issue even has an extra bonus: a Planetary preview by Warren Ellis and
John Cassaday.
Siren 2
"Nancy Drew grown up" is a much better description for this book than "Astro
City-like", because Siren is more interesting than the latter.
Stormwatch 11
Aw, don't make me read WildC.A.T.s/Aliens, guys! I mean, I'll do it, cause I
love Warren Ellis's work, but I don't want to.
LIGHTSPEED
Finder Footnotes 1
I like the idea of getting more people interested in this fascinating science
fiction series, but I'm jealous -- how can I, a faithful reader, get the
annotations without rebuying the issues I have? 'Cause, frankly, I need them.
Don't get me wrong, the series is still entertaining and intriguing.
ONI PRESS
Geisha 1
Andi Watson has a unique graphic design sense that it's been a pleasure to
watch develop over the years of Skeleton Key. That this series is the story of
a young female android dealing with prejudice and finding her way in the world
is an added bonus.

Archie & Friends Halloween Ashcan
Great idea, poor catalog placement.
RADIO COMIX
Morning Glory 1
I'm not that interested in fairy stories, but I thought I'd point out that this
sounds an awful lot like a romance comic with fantasy trappings.
SIRIUS ENTERTAINMENT
Akiko 28
Another month, another Akiko. I could get spoiled by this!
Scary Godmother: Revenge of Jimmy
It took me too long to get around to checking out the original hardcover, and
once I finally did, I kicked myself for waiting. Gorgeous art, hilarious story
-- I hope this becomes a long-standing Halloween tradition (and the Valentine's
Day one-shot was terrific too!)
Sheba 4
The coolest way I know to learn world mythologies. I want a Sheba stuffed toy!
SLAP HAPPY COMICS
Monstrosity
Samplers are great ideas! I would have rather seen short stories instead of
pinups, but I can't pass up this collection of talent. (And I'm still looking
for the original Rampage!)
SPX
SPX 98
You're supporting the CBLDF, you're reading the work of some amazing creators,

The geeks get a job. This book is ripe to become a sitcom.
BOOKS
The Comic-Book Book
I'm so glad they're bringing these books back into print. There are few enough
histories of this medium.
How to Draw Wonder Woman
Woo woo! I've been wanting to learn how to draw -- how better than with one of
my favorite characters?
Writer's Guide to Business of Comics
Lurene Haines wrote the best book on breaking into comics I've read (Getting
Into the Business of Comics). Her advice is practical, down-to-earth, and
useful. Even if you're not trying to get into the business, she gives you an
unique, informative view of the industry.

I was about to shoot off a snippy remark along the lines of "Not I!" but it
actually turns out that I am indeed a frusterated writer. I'm hard at work on
trying not to be so bad at it.

Hm...couldn't anything be considered a success? If you spin it hard enough.
Even Maximum Press or Broadway or something like that...

I hate those timelines, is all.

This sounds swell-a-riffic. I could use a copy of RM #1.

Aw, come on! All Aliens/* crossovers are good! Why, just look at
Batman/Aliens and Superman/Aliens! (Nate is not responsible for any harm
resulting from looking at Batman/Aliens or Superman/Aliens. He will, however,
vouch for the original Aliens vs Predator mini series)
What I'd really like to see is an Aliens/* book set in an alternate
continuity, so that the Aliens could just rip into the JLA or WildCats or
Cerebus, or whomever. Have some really cool, noble deaths. Maybe one survivor.
That I'd purchase!

Holy cripes! I'll buy two, but how on earth do they make money at that
price? Aside from that, I don't much care to start on the 98th issue of a
title. =)

I'd really like to learn to draw the Endless from Sandman. that would be
something.
Well, I admire all the small press stuff you get. Do you find that a lot of
it is late or cancelled outright? It's that kind of stuff that keeps me from
trying most small time books...
Take Care

It's good. The lenticular gizmo on the front is fun, too.

I believe everyone works for free. I don't think it will catch
on. :)
But while we're on the subject, SPX is the best show I have
ever been to. It is highly recommended to anyone who'll be in
the Maryland area in September. It's great fun and a wonderful
place to find terrific comics. And last year Scott McCloud was
selling Zot! pages.

Hey, there's a lot of terrific small press stuff out there.
>Do you find that a lot of it is late or cancelled outright?
There have been titles I have dropped because they're never on
time (Strangehaven, Tales from the Bog), but there are more
and more indy comics people who understand the importance
of professionalism in business. Akiko, for example, comes out
every month. Galaxion comes out every two months, with the
exception of an announced rescheduling due to a wedding (and
I can't begrudge that). It's not that big a problem, really.

Well, I think it probably went like this...
First, they solicit #4.
Next, they get orders for #4.
They tell the printer to print so many issues based on the orders
recieved (usually more copies than the number of orders
recieved).
They, at this point, solicit #5 and say in the ad, based on the
orders recieved for #4, that it was a success.

Is there *ever* going to be another issue of Strangehaven? If they don't
hurry up, I'll have gotten so far through my pile of unread comics that
I'll have actually read the last two issues. That would never do.
Anybody who can't publish comics faster than *I* get round to reading them
is in big trouble...

I'd never dream of dropping a title for that reason, although I have often
missed issues because of it. I am reliably informed that the next issue of
Strangehaven (##9) is out, but it hasn't turned up at my local shop yet.
Gary, if you read this, PLEASE, find another way to distribute to UK shops.

Yes and no. I'd prefer they kept everything in TPB. Everything. As
soon as it was released, put it into trade paperback. But that's just
me.

(This is a rather snotty aside from someone who has been reading

know the "Special" was new too.)

Heh. I give it 5 more issues before they're fired and replaced. I love
the book, but sales have dipped.

Wow. More interesting than Astro City? KICK-ASS! This is because they

Why not? Chris Sprouse art with Warren Ellis writing? No problems
here... Granted, the oversize format is a little pricey.

True. I've seen the preview art for this three times, and every time
it just gets better. I can not wait for this to ship.

Ditto. Although I understand why many people feel that way. I'm used to
having several months worth of a particular title sit there unread, waiting
for me to sit down and read a while bunch in one go, so it's not a big deal
to wait for longer and read a amller pile of Strangehaven. For people who
simply read the story from one month to the next, I can understand why
it would be unsatisfying to have to wait three moths between issues.
>although I have often missed issues because of it.
Again, ditto. When a comic comes out that infrequently, you lose track of
when the next one's due, so you don't look out for it on the shelves.
>I am reliably informed that the next issue of

Nah, this is because I got bored with the AC game of "which
