Which artist's work do you =like= better?
>Which one will be more sought after 10 years from now.
If you're looking for something to buy that will appreciate in value, I'd
recommend stock in, say, General Electric or Disney or Pfizer.
But if you're intent on investing in art, you'll want to buy from the one
most likely to die between now and then, as artists' work goes up in value
after they die. Yes, this is a creepy approach, but no more so than
selecting an artist based on ROI in the first place.
Ask just about any stock investor who's been successful in the long term,
and he'll tell you to look for basic =value= in a stock. e.g. For a
manufacturer, do they produce quality products, have a solid supply network,
maintain good labour relations, enjoy consistently good profit margins, etc?
Art is the same... just the nature of "value" is different. And frankly, if
you can't tell whether an artist's work is going lasting value or not (not
that there's anything wrong with not being able), maybe art isn't something
you should be trying to consider as an investment.

I'll make it simple for DOOM. Buy from Jan Duursema. She's the better artist
of the two, and has been working in comics for nearly 12 years. She has a
better grasp of anatomy and storytelling. Plus her stuff just looks neat.
Just don't expect to be able to easily turn around and liquidate the painting
you end up getting.

Whew--Glad Lex is running. I thought I was going to have to vote for Bush
there for a minute.
