This week, I'm picking up:

Intimates #2 (DC)

Superman/Batman #15 (DC) - I love the first issue of this arc

Toe Tags #3 (DC)

Ultimates 2 #1 (Marvel)

I also have to pick up an Adam Strange action figure. I just have
to.

Maybe. Not really in the mood for spooky stuff right now, but I've heard

This storyline may be the most ambitious Peter David has ever attempted.
Gripping stuff.

Thanks again Charles. I know I keep saying that every week, but every
week I am thankful. :-)

The books I'll be getting:

>ARCHAIA STUDIOS PRESS
> Artesia Annual #3 (AA), $4.95

Oh it is so tempting to buy another copy of this book. I don't know
why, but when I didn't buy any extras of the first annual, later I
wished I had. I think I will pick up another copy.

>DC COMICS
> Detective Comics #801, $2.95

Looking forward to this batch of DC books. I hope Detective #801 is
more moving than the preview in #800. Also I can't wait to read Y #29
after the cliffhanger in #28.

>
>IMAGE COMICS
> Hunter Killer #0, $0.25
I didn't even know there was a #0 issue. Hunter Killer caught my eye
in the lastest Previews (for February), and I made a note to check it
out. I guess I should buy this $0.25 issue for the preview instead.

>
>MARVEL COMICS
> New Avengers #1, $2.25
Yeah yeah, I can't stand the lineup... and I don't have high
expectations for this title. Still, I can't resist. Plus I don't
wanna be left out in the cold when everyone starts posting about it.
:-)

> New X-Men #7, $2.99

> Tomb Of Dracula #3, $2.99

> Ultimates 2 #1, $2.99
Well, this is one comic where I think I will not be too badly swindled
by plunking down $2.99 instead of $2.25.

This one's a maybe.

>ONI PRESS
Whatever happened to Queen & Country #28? Per my notes, Q&C
Declassified should be coming out right about now and #28 was due last
month.

A nice week, with a couple of books that I'm anxious to read (Y,
Ultimates V.2 and even New Avengers just to see if it's any good), and
only one that I'm really ambivalent about (Uncanny).

Strictly speaking, #1 is already more than six months late, since it was first
solicited for the spring of 2004. I suppose they're going to get three or four
issues out on a monthly schedule now, but considering that I recently heard that
Hitch was still at work on #4, there's ample cause for pessimism.

Finally this issue has an homage to mid-60s Marvel (and Kirby in
particular). This is a great series. Batton Lash is having fun writing
it, and I'm having fun reading it."

Actually, this is an homage to Kirby's Fourth World 1970s series, and
the backup story, "Radio Man," is an homage to 1940s Simon & Kirby.

Because meeting the planned schedule is the commerce part of the
equation. Art is great. So is consistent delivery. When I tune into my
favorite TV show to see a promised new episode during the regular
season, I want to see an episode with the same quality as the previous,
but I also want to see that new episode.

If Hitch can't meet that schedule, he should work on specials and
miniseries and other products better suited to what he can accomplish.

They put the thing off for 6+ months just to give Bryan Hitch a chance
to get a couple issues in the can before they solicited the first
issue. Once that backlog is gone... we're back to 3 months between
issues if we're lucky.

As much as I like Hitch's work, we need an artist who can actually
deliver on a monthly schedule.

I fail to see how giving the book a long lead time before the first
issue is published is a bad thing.

>As much as I like Hitch's work, we need an artist who can actually
>deliver on a monthly schedule.

No. We need it all to be drawn by Hitch. He's a (if not the) major
reason to pick up any given issue of Ultimates. If they get a fill-in
artist or someone else to draw the entire series solely for the
short-term gain of readers needing their fix every 30 days then they
might as well not even publish the book. I guess some readers would
even rather have random, completely-unrelated back issue stories
published as current comics like Marvel did in the 70s.

Everyone wants long-term thinking from the publishers. This is it.
Keep the work in print forever and make it a cohesive whole in the
format that will last.

You seem to actively *want* fill-in art or for slower artists to rush

out bad art. Why? Is the monthly habit so god-damned important to have
such a stranglehold on you?

Which would be a fine solution, but Marvel hasn't chosen to do that.
They and the creators are pretending that THIS time, yeah, it's really
going to be monthly.

At a certain point, we need to stop enabling such self-delusion. :)

I like the current (Busiek, Nord et al.) CONAN solution: switch
to another but related story strand by a reserve art team, thus

allowing the regular art team a catch-up break. Naturally that
reserve strand needs to be safely interruptable; breaks between
its episodes may become quite long and uneven.

So change the schedule to fit the project. Why is a MONTHLY schedule
so important? Different comics SHOULD take different amounts of time
to produce, just like different movies or different books or different
everything else.

Personally, I prefer that the entire series to be drawn by Bryan Hitch.
However, based on his track record, it would behoove Marvel to not begin
soliciting the series until he has at least six - eight issues completed.

If Hitch is the selling point of The Ultimates, and we've already endured a
delay, why would another delay of 2-3 months until he has at least 6 issues
in the can be that bad?

??? They've done exactly that. They stopped soliciting the book to
create a backlog and are now releasing this set of twelve issues in
one shot.

Making a book bimonthly or suspending it entirely and taking a year
between arcs would both be examples of changing the schedule to fit
the project.

>They and the creators are pretending that THIS time, yeah, it's really
>going to be monthly.

I think if they kept soliciting it past #13 and didn't cancel it for
nine months, then that would be pretending that the book was monthly.
Spawn would be an example of this, where people were ordering books
over a year before they came out.

If it's not going to be a monthly book, they need to stop promoting it
as a monthly book. Solicit it quarterly. Be honest about it and SAY
they're only going to put out 3 issues a year. But if they're going
to solicit it as a monthly book and claim it's a monthly book, they'd
damn well better MAKE it a monthly book rather than resoliciting every
issue 3-4 times.

Right, but I'm guessing that the promise that "this year we're going to
make the monthly schedule" is going to fall apart this time as well.
