How many of you cheered when Denzel Washington settled the argument of Kirby's
Silver Surfer vs. Mobeius's Surfer? I almost stood up and cheered.

I said out loud "Damn right!" without thinking. I got the response "Jack
is king!" from somewhere else in the theatre. That was a very cool line.
I also liked the Star Trek/Scotty line. Those lines had the name
Tarantino written all over them. :-) The movie was EXCELLENT as well. A
good start to the summer movie season. The Judge Dredd coming attraction
look SUPERB! I loved seeing that guy with the dial on his head. I just
cannot think of his name. All I know is he says "I'll go up to 4 on ya!"

Denzel Washington's character is reprimanding a seaman who's just been in a
fight. When asked what the fight was about, the guy explains that he had said
that Kirby's Silver Surfer was the only *real* Silver Surfer, and the other guy
was got mad because he was a Mobius fan. After reprimanding the guy that he
should be setting an example, Denzel says, "Besides, anyone who know anything
about comic books knows that Kirby's Silver Surfer was the only real Silver
Surfer."

It was a cute bit.

The movie is on a submarine, and Denzel Washington is the Executive
Officer (2nd in command). A fight breaks out in the galley (?), and
Washington approaches one of the two men involved as he is walking
away from the scene. He asks about the incident, and the sailor
says that it was only a difference of opinion. Washington ask what
about, and the sailor says that he'd prefer to just forget about it.
Washington says that he really doesn't care what the sailor would
rather do. So the sailor says that the two of them were talking
comics; the other guy thought that Moebius' Silver Surfer was the
best Silver Surfer, and the sailor thought that Kirby's Silver
Surfer was the best. Thus the fight. Washington then said
something typical of a superior officer ("Keep your mind on your
post" or something similar), but finished the conversation off with
the line "...and anybody who reads comic books knows that Kirby's
Silver Surfer was the best Silver Surfer."
Yes, I almost cheered, too. I think four people in the theatre got
it, including a co-worker I saw it with.

"How many of you stood up and cheered when Denzel Washington settled the

Personally I think the Buscema Silver Surfer buries them both...

Finally, I thought I was the only one who think of Buscema when the
people talk about the Surfer. He was the one who gave him that unique
visual, a really thin guy with a tragic expression in his eyes. As much as I
think Ron Lim's rendering is beautyful, it looks like another superhero, and
the same applies to Kirby.
By the way, what's John Buscema doing this days?

Yaaaay!

Artwise Joh Buscema, sure, but when I think of the Silver Surfer the
first guy to come to my mind is Stan Lee. Sure he did this and sure he
did that, but from what I recall, its the character he most enjoyed
writing, and I thought he did a fair job of it. Really, the regular
series I found to be very bad in comparison...

Well, with Kirby, the whole character was Galactus's herald. He had to
be bigger than life in that way, while with Buscema it was a little more
of a philosophical character...

Silver Surfer with George Perez writing is what I heard. Before that I
saw him on some sort of Punisher cowboy thing. He's so damn good. I had
heard he was burnt out on superheros. I wish we could see something ...
BIG from the guy, like this Kubert book on the way, Fax from Sarajevo.
he'd just be amazing on something like that...

I didn't stand up and cheer but I did notice that I was the only person
in the theater who was laughing. Gotta love that Tarantino.

The Buscema Surfer buries them both?

Actually, I thought this was a horrible example of
"Tarrantino-for-Tarrantino's Sake." Supposed to be hip and jokey, but not
exactly funny or insightful.

Yeah, I know. Do you think David just said that to be funny or does he
honestly believe Buscema beats them? If you ask me, Gene Hackman should
have been able to tell right then that Washington was a man who knew his
stuff. He should have handed over the Captain's keys right then. If he
had been there, of course.
