Ah, there's the problem. Not until writing the above citation did I
notice "based on the movie".

On weekdays, the local comic store is open only during my nap time,
but it opens at eleven on Saturday, and last Saturday I came home from
the Farmer's Market later than usual, so I dropped in to frisk the
fifty-cent comix for funnybooks.

The boxes were too tightly-packed to frisk, so I looked at only one
book from each box -- not surprisingly, the above was the nearest to a
funnybook that such a cursory search turned up, even though there were
a *lot* of boxes. I brought it home, showed it to DH, put it on the
pile at the head of the bed, found it on the floor Monday morning.

His verdict was "bad art, goofy dialog", and instructions not to add
it to his comic-book collection.

After leafing through a bit, I don't think I'll read it before adding
it to the pile of magazines I'll take to the emergency-room waiting
room the next time I take a ride on the boardwalk. The art is
unattractive and doesn't tell a story.

If that means it was based on the third Dick Tracy serial, probably
everything you say applies to the movie as well.

This mini-series was a tie-in to Warren Beatty's movie. IMO, it was
Kyle Baker's worst art job ever -- until Deadpool Max. IIRC, the whole
thing was collected into a trade, but even the individual
prestige-format issues were a long slog because of Baker's leaden,
inert artwork. He seemed to either miss the point of Chester Gould's
haiku-like minimalism or have complete contempt for it, presenting an
over-caricatured mess that didn't even bother to capture the charm or
simplicity of the movie (which was pretty good despite Beatty
miscasting himself in the title role.)

OTOH, it's worth getting out of any discount box (dollar box,
whatever) just for the curiosity value of seeing what a complete
failure of a comic book looks like when Rob Liefeld has nothing to do
with it.

Your friend is a serious Dick Tracy collector?

I never got aroud to seeing the Dick Tracy/Warren Beatty movie, although I've always had an interest in the Gould DT work... the film just seemed to be a clueless take off on the success of Batman, and a Madonna vehicle/mess.

I just watched "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" so I'd watch it now as a Warren Beatty film, but to me he never seemed like he'd be a very good Dick Tracy.

He just has a stash of funny books -- mostly ducks and rabbits, but
there's a hard-bound Little Lulu around here some place.

Oh, wait, that's mine.

There's no living human being who could look like the comic strip Dick
Tracy. Beatty at least understood what most other versions had missed,
that the genius of the strip was in the quirky ensemble cast and exotic
villains. Tracy himself was pretty bland.

If the ducks were by Carl Barks, he has excellent taste. (Can't think of
any worthwhile rabbits.)

Haven't thought of Little Lulu in years. IIRC, those comics were really
funny.
