Why would this be a bad thing? I wouldn't a batch of new people contributing
to this newgroup, as well as new buyers for r.a.c.marketplace.
Will more users cause lag or posting problems? If they don't, I don't see why
more users would be an annoyance (?)

No, there won't be a noticeable lag because of the way Usenet is set up.
What there will be is 600,000 people ignorant of Internet netiquette [1]
and unfamiliar with "big-time" computing--just like freshmen every
September. They'll do nothing more than make irritating and clueless
mistakes, but that's more than enough in this hustle and hurry world.
Admittedly, AOL is a for-profit service, which selects toward older and
wiser. Unfortunately, this also means the *kids* of soi-disant "older and
wiser" types. It's probably not going to top the never-ending September of
'93, but it's going to be irritating.
[1] They'll presumably be familiar with AOL netiquette, but AOL has admins
to keep things running smoothly; Usenet is a self-regulating anarchy,
which requires a fairly high level of competence among the participants.

This tirade against the possible problems involved with America Online
gaining net access sound IMO as elitist snobbery and isolationist. So there
will be more people posting who don't know our "codes of conduct." So post
the F.A.Q. on netiquette again. No big problem there. So they will make
more mistakes. WE were all newbies once and managed to catch on to what
went on with these newsgroups. Furthermore, with more users, there is the
possibility of more specific newsgroups (i.e. r.a.c.marvel and r.a.c.vertigo)
as to avoid an overload of postings on this group.
Just my .02 right there. Comments?

I agree. Sure, maybe I will shrug when someone does something
stupid, but I won't get all riled up about it. I made mistakes when I
first started posting, but everybody flamed me really fast, so I learned!

Yeah. . . the one thing I *am* concerned about is a lot more
postings. 1000 posts a week or something is a LOT (of course, after people
stop posting about Green Lantern, it'll go down to 500) to wade through.
However, are more splits the answer? I basically agree with the
idea that everything should stay here just so everyone has the chance to
be subjected to new comics and stuff. If that means 2000 posts a week,
I guess I will just learn to deal.

Quick question: What is the name of the Peter David written 4-issue limited
series coming out this summer, that's essentially Paul: Year One? No, it's
not _Saul_Man_, that's a different one.

They're here already, actually. Just saw a post from a guy on
alt.tv.animaniacs. Okay, Rac.misc, listen up! From this point forth, no one
is to admit that _Paul_, _Adventures_of_Paul_, _The_Holy_Apostles_, etc. are
not 'real' comics. Treat it as real as anything, categoricaly deny that it
is Paul The Samurai from NEC, and let's see how long we can go with this.
The Paul-FAQ ought to be done sometime next week, and will contain not
*word* *one* about the 'true' beginnings of the Paul threads. Let the
newbies read the FAQ if they want to find it out.
Don't forget, we've also got Suicide Squid, Amazing Sider Man, Matman... I'm
psyched.

the possibility of slow down. I welcome them to join our "nice"
discussions! I simply was taking the opportunity to INFORM the host

You say this as were it were a bad thing. Me, I'm foursquare for warrented
elitism as I suspect you are. If not, hire me to fix your car the next time
it goes wrong instead of someone who's a good auto mechanic. And frankly,
everytime the net has expanded to any large degree there's been a degradation
in the s/n ratio and an increase in the number of net.jerks. Yes, good people
have joined each time (personally, I'm a second generation netter since I
came in in the early days of Usenet...which resulted in warrented snobbery
by those who were already on Arpanet and complaints about how the net wasn't
as good as it used to be. By the mid-80s, there was an implied hierarchy of
Arpanet>Usenet>Bitnet in terms of origination of material...and as a general
rule of thumb it worked. The important thing was to realize there were
exceptions. Also see Portal and PSU's early reps.).

As the one who does just that around here, it's no big problem to post it.
Getting newbies to read it and pay attention to it is another matter. The
good ones will; they're not what I'm worried about. The vast numbers who
won't, and more importantly are fundamentally irresponsible (since an anarchy
only works when members are responsible) I am.

Case in point there...I coulda sworn the r.a.c. FAQ drove a stake in the
hearts of those two splits until at least November. Knew I should've cut
off their heads and stuffed 'em with garlic.
It's also worth noting that no split in history has ever lowered overall
traffic. Every one has raised the traffic beyond previous levels in the
single group.
There's a reason why old-timers are bailing out of newsgroups and the net,
and it has to do with the growth and lower s/n ratio. We're losing a lot
with these influxes, and frankly I'll take a fair number of people who used
to be our best posters over a horde of deliberately clueless perpetual newbies
any day of the week. Doesn't mean I don't want new blood here; in all
seriousness, I'm voting for Abhajit as one of my three votes in the Favorite
r.a.c.er Squiddy category and I don't believe he was posting here before
1993; he certainly wasn't in the results of that category last year. There
are other welcome newcomers as well; Eagle's a freshling and it's his first
year on the net. Unfortunately, people like them have become too much the
exception among newbies, and certainly much more than they used to be.

Personally, I guess I'm a populist -- give everybody his or her say.
Besides, for the short time I've been reading this newsgroup, I don't
think anybody here is any more intelligent OR more courteous than
folks out in the real world. (e.g. I don't see much difference between
net.dweebs and real.people =) They both argue just as illogically
and love ad hominem attacks.)
The main problem I see is... OVERQUOTING! Which already happens...
As for message traffic, I already skip over 95% of everything here,

It didn't come across as a tirade to me. There's been a recent flood of
discussion on the mailing list managers mailing list on this topic. It
seems that several lists have been innundated from AOL for various reasons
all of which can be summed up as "newbie" mistakes by either users or
admins. Advising us to be extra tolerant because they'll be arriving
seems an excellent idea.
I doubt reposting the FAQ will do a bit of good. Yes, we should do it --
but it's not reasonable to expect any given new user to have seen it
before having seen 250 other articles. Better that we keep copies of it
and send it to individuals as needed; carefully coupled with our best
polite "Welcome, friend" messages and a lilttle time spent holding their
hands.

I am in the midst of a trial period on AOL, so as soon as I saw this thread
I logged on over there and checked this out. They've already got it set up,
and it's been that way for a while, it seems. Complete Usenet access. And
AOL's management, at least, is acting responsibly, prominently displaying
messages that say READ ME FIRST and IMPORTANT: NETTIQUETTE. These are
written quite reasonably, suggesting that AOL subscribers read for a while
without posting in order to get used to what's going on, introducint the idea
of FAQs, warning about flamewars, etc. Anyone who reads these messages and
isn't simply a jerk (yeah, I know, big conditions) should get along here
just fine. Let's just hope people take the time to read them...

AOL, I've read over their comic book groups from time to time. I don't want to
seem judgemental or anything, but when I'm on AOL, it feels like I'm talking
to kids, vs. racm where it seems sometimes like a course I'm taking. Of
course, most people's Internet access comes from Universities and Colleges.
There will be some problems with AOL's new entries--ALL of their comic book
"boards" or "newgroups" are split into subject--thus there is a Sandman folder,
an Xmen folder, a DC folder and an Image folder. Get ready for some major
split discussion. I also dont expect ftp access until later so many will
forego reading the racfaq--more problems.
If anyone wants me to pass some info to AOL's comic book boards, email me.

feed. Personally, I like being part of the technological elite (hey, at
least I can admit it!). My mom (who is currently learning about all the
wonders the net has to offer) refers to me as a "tech snob." I sincerely
believe that netnews maintains a much higher calibur of intellectual than
you would find just walking the streets. So, while I would rather the
merge not occur, it's inevitable. Call me an elitist. Call me a
facist. Call me whatever. So be it.
There is, however, one positive aspect that seems to have been
overlooked. Shouldn't we be seeing a whole new group of personalities
working in the industry joining the r.a.c.* heirarchy? Isn't Jeff Smith
on AOL? And "The Neil," too, right?

Nope. The box will come with a list a various suppliers. You call
the one who looks most local and most reasonable to you. How the

I liked it as well; the scene where Corinthian I meets Corinthian II
still makes me want to hurl (and I have a pretty strong stomach for
gore...)... I liked the way they handled the summoning of the
second Corinthian, too: did anyone else notice how they never really
confirm that he's the _second_ corinthian that was created, all we know
is that he's some future incarnation of the Corinthian, drawn by the
power of the Mad Magnet (the only really weak point of the story, IMHO)
from the distant future. A neat and clean way of using Sandman
characters without having to worry about what'll happen to the new
corinthian in TKO.
