Leafing through my Harper's Magazine for September 2002, and lo and behold
in the "Readings" section, page 29, is an extensive excerpt from Gail
Simone's Web site, listing the varied atrocities committed to females in
comic-bookdom over the years.

While it's kind of a queasy read, it will sure as hell open a few eyes. And
I'm not sure what Harper's circulation is, but I'm pretty sure it's
substantially bigger than any comic book...

p.s. What about GWEN STACY: Thrown off bridge, dead?

...never mind about Gwen Stacy. Harper's just didn't include her. But
that's probably because she wasn't listed as "thrown off bridge."

You'd better update that site, Gail, and get all those highbrows to start
reading AGENT X...

What a horrific way for comics to get mainstream treatment.

Yikes. I just got my copies today.

I had included a bunch of stuff about how comics have improved, how
this is no longer a trend, etc.

But it didn't get included.

The site is REALLY out of date. But thanks.

For the same reasons that they didn't include Gwen Stacy: those newer facts
aren't as stunning as "thrown off a bridge."

Guess who just hit 95% on the Irony-meter?

Credit to Troy, but some additions (*) by me:

"As has been pointed out many times, Omar is a tool. Like any other tool,
his value lies in how you use him. Answer him..allow his idiocy to enrich
your day. Here's a way you can use Omar for entertainment, right from your
own home. Kids, remember to ask your parents if it's ok for you to play.

OMAR POKER
You will need:
a computer and news reader
one post from Omar

How To Play:
Email two or three other r.a.c'ers off board and make bets as to who can
get
the most Omar points. Each of you respond to the Omar post. When he
responds to your post, count up the points based on his reply.
The person with the most points wins. The following words get the
indicated
point value:
turd.........3
retard......1
moron.....1
clue.........2
asswipe, *other "ass" derivative...2
pathetic...3
*fuck...2
*cocksucker, other "cock" derivative...4
*shithead, other "shit" derivative...2
*accusations of homosexuality....3

If he doesn't use "Don't cry" on your reply you get a bonus 5 points."

***
Admittedly, I dickered with the points list to reflect the New Omar (sort
of like the New Leave It To Beaver, but a lot less funny (!) and hopefully
even shorter-lived), but I'm running at a whopping SIX POINTS for ONE
SENTENCE!

Looking forward to the Omarlympics...

After some googling (the magazine's at home)...

I really like the site. It could have gone the "rant" route, but instead
it's got a lot of depth, balanced responses, and a generally all-round
intelligent response to the situation-at-the-time.
