Sure enough, past 3:30 I was at Scott Morse's table gawking at the
bluelines for the superlatives-fail-me-but-it-tore-my-heart-out
VISITATIONS, Terri's (Terry's) iron hand descended upon me and I was
marched to the front door.
I told people I'd pissed someone off and Terri was con security and I
was being punted out because that was less embrassing than having Terri
(Terry) hustle my duff out because I don't know from 3:30.
ANYWAY, before Terry (Terri) did her job, and if I ever go on tour,
she's coming with me, here's who and what I saw:
Tara Jenkins. Nicer than I could have possibly hoped for. Got an armload
of GALAXION and read it with dinner and boggled at how many different
cast members there were--and that they all look different. Now I see
what everyone is jonesing about! This series gets better with every
issue, and the writing has a lot of insight and finesse.
Chris Bucher, who I alarmed with HMO horror stories, was supposed to
talk to, and never hooked up with again. Write me, Chris.
Scott Morse. Had a cool Crazyfish display and copies of most (if not
all) the issues) of SOULWIND and LittleGreyMan and a display of the
cover of VISITATIONS. We talked about how early teachers affect an
artist's preference in material and technique. Scott's teachers were
old-school animators, and it shows in the energy of his drawing and his
use of color and paint. (Mine were fine artists working in watercolor.)
Read "The Day I Tried to Live" issues of SOULWIND, and they are so
great. Great energy and verve in the drawings, and the style is
appealing, and the story is alarming and poignant.
Lauren Faust. Who WILL have SUPERMODELS DON'T KNOW KUNG FU done for
WonderCon, and I can't wait. Lauren, in case you don't know, was one of
the animators for Sawyer, the lady cat in CATS DON'T DANCE. If you
missed CDD becasue Warner's publicity did an el sucko job of promoting
it, you can catch it on The Disney Channel or rent it. It is a GREAT
animated movie, and was crushed under dreck like SPACE JAM.
Heidi McDonald. Was absolutely Heidi. 'Nuff said!
David Seidman. My editor at the long-gone Disney Comics. David has a
book coming out in Jine, ALL GONE, about disappearing pop culture. He
was very excited about it--and he should be. It looks like a GREAT book.
Jimmie Robinson. Promoting CODE BLUE, his new series from Image. I got
to see a big hunk of the first issue pencil a while back. This rocks. I
also know about some of the characters, and I'm looking forward to it.
Graphicnovels.com. These gals and guy(s) will be for graphic novels in
particular what Amazon.com is for book in general--a place to get
anything. As they said to me, "If it's a graphic novel, we'll be selling
it.
Their website is:
They're all set up for secure transactions and everything! Go see!
They were also pleasant and enthusiastic.
There was MUCH more, but that's all for me--I have to get up in (cry)
four hours.
I had a great time, I'm going again next year, and I heartily
recommended it--just on the strength of the oh-so-tortured melancholy of
Goths that wafted through, even though APE had a lot more going for it
than just that.
Like Terry!
Next time, I might even get to sit down.
P.S.: Thanks to Greg Espinoza for being such a shamless shill for
CATHEDRAL, and Jimmie for putting CC cards on his table, too.
