Odd question time:

In the early and mid 1980s, there was a superherho role-playing game called
"Villains and Vigilantes", and I'm wondering if anyone has any info on what
artists participated in it. The game has come up in conversation with a
friend I used to play it with, and we were both wondering what happened to
it and the artists involved-- my friend thinks at least one of the artists
went on to mainstream comics work, but couldn't recall the name and couldn't
be sure. We both agreed that the art wasn't particularly good, especially in
regard to anatomy and proportion, so perhaps the artist in question ended up
at Image? :-)

Seriously-- any info much appreciated.

I'm not sure about the game itself, but Eclipse Comics published a
mini-series based on the game in 1986 and the artist on it was Jeff Dee, who
I believe did other comics work and definitely had a wonky sense of anatomy,
design, pacing, and other "frills" unnecessary to great comics. I know at
least one game module was written by Jeff O'Hare, but other than his name I
know nothing about him.
Hope some of this helps
Jason

Jeff Dee did most of the early art, but Bill Willingham did the Doctor
Destroyer modules (and later reworked a lot of the stuff from them into
Elementals), and Pat Zircher got his start doing V&V stuff (and later on some
Champion stuff, like C.L.O.W.N.).

Dave Van Domelen, got a lot of his early sueprhero coloring practice
done on V&V products....

Bill Willingham was the other "name" artist who did V&V stuff. Mabye
Jackson "Butch" Guice too. I'd go check my books, but they're not handy.
V&V stuff is still in print though, and Jeff Dee is doing a next
generation version of it. Check around and you may find some cover scans.

And lo, Usenet provideth with its customary speed.

Thanks, folks-- Jeff Dee was definitely the name we were searching for--
once I had the name I quickly found some scans of the art from "Crisis at
Crusader Citadel," the early module that my friend and I hand played-- and,
yes, the Eclipse series was what he had been thinking of.

I'm ashamed to admit I'd forgotten Willingham's involvement, as well-- I
remember, now, noting his name when he started showing up as a backup artist
in DC's BATO.

Dr. Apocalypse? Dr. Destroyer is a villain from Champions, not V & V.

Yeah, that guy. Mixed up with the fact that his minions were the
Destroyers (as in Death Duel with the Destroyers). At least I didn't call
him Saker....

Dave Van Domelen, not that Saker wore a helmet....

Ahh, Champions...lord did I spend a lot of time crunching numbers to
perfect my characters for that game.

Who was the guy who did the art for the Champions books? Something
Perez, right? Wonder whatever became of him...

Actually, most of the Champions books *I* have, have art by a fellow
called Mark Williams.

(They got Perez to do art for them in later editions, well after Perez
was an established comics star.)

Well, the best know current comic artist who worked on both V&V and
Champions is Pat Zircher...

Bill Willingham did "Death Duel with the Destroyers", many of whom would
reappear in his Elemental comic.

Jeff Dee did design work on the game, and also cover art. He ended up
doing a couple pieces for DC comics, as well.
