Maybe there's a silver lining to Iron Man...

From whatever his name is who is taking over Iron Man at #25

"What Kurt and Roger Stern have done on IRON MAN has been amazing and
will define the character for years to come. I've decided that the
only way for me to take on Tony Stark, and company, is to set off on a
completely different tangent. I toyed with the idea of writing a
Speedball story and having it appear within the covers of IRON MAN #26
- #29, but somehow I think the fans would see through my carefully
planned charade. So instead, this four-issue arc will deal more with
Tony out of the armor, and I really mean out of the armor. There'll be
plenty of babes, brawls, and bad guys... but the main focus is going
to be on Tony and certain elements of his life that he might not find
quite so fulfilling. "

Grrr... We've seen plenty of Tony in the past 400 something issue of
Iron Man! I wanna see Speedball! (where is NW anyway, geez!)

Well, I tried to find a silver lining, but that didn't work either
apparently.

Any chance a Plastic Man, Deadpool, Speedball, and JLA 6-7 Zauriel
teamup being planned anywhere? (I'll buy 100 copies, promise :)

Nah, I don't want Rhodey to be Iron Man, I just want to see him in
action. My two favorite Rhodey moments were when he stood up to Doom
with a lousy machine gun and when he backed Iron Man up against Blacklash,
the Blizzard and Boomerang. Rhodey doesn't need armor - just give him
some guns and a few nifty Stark gadgets and he's perfect.

I could live with that. :) I don't care if he has the War Machine armor,
the Warwear, an Iron Man suit or nothing at all, the man underneath is
what I wanna see! And not just half a page every other month, like it's
been recently...

I may have just skipped over stuff (I've been reading the current Cap & Iron
Man series' since issue 12 on each with Heroes Reborn).

Has Rhodey's recovering Cap's shield ever mentioned anywhere other than in
Cap's book?
Unless I'm totally off, it seems that in Iron Man Jim's been doing one kind of
work, at the same time in Cap he'd been hunting for the missing Shield....

Oh well. Supposedly a lot of this should be addressed in the upcoming issues
of Captain America, right?

I can't think of anything that would drive me off the book faster than a Jim
Rhodes Iron Man. I've always like Jim Rhodes, but his time on Iron Man is my
second to least favorite time on the book. The first had to do with murder and
teenagers. ---Alan

Hmmm... I think they smooched on the picnic cloth, that's all. Let me
take another look at it...

Okay, in the last panel of the scene, Tony's right hand seems to be
working on something, so, yeah, maybe you're right. ;-)

Yeah, well, who could have liked "murder and teenagers" (translation:
The Crossing)? The only thing I didn't like about Rhodey as IM was the
Stark was nearly a bum for some of that time and...Circuits Maximus.
For some reason I just thought that company was a bad idea. Turns out I
was right...considering the, um, woman (Clytemnestra? something like
that) who helped created it was evil.

Rhodey as War Machine should have his own book. Two armors in Iron Man dilutes the
cool factor too much. Rhodey as the super capable pilot/mercenary/friend is always
welcome in Iron Man. ---Alan

YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!

I agree. Powerless, Rhodey's a perfect member of supporting cast. But give
him the War Machine armor or the Warwear, and he's so powerful he'll
automatically draw too much attention from Iron Man, and the book will
become IRON MAN AND WAR MACHINE, which would not, IMO, be desirable.

However, Rhodey really should wear the armor now and then. Like when Stark
was beaten to hell and back. It was completely moronic for him to keep
wearing the armor when he *knows* Rhodey can do the job, and do it well,
while he's recovering. But I'll chalk it up to macho pride and the
inability to ask for help, both of which Tony certainly has demonstrated
in the past...

Yeah, the idea of Rhodey/Iron Man was forever poisoned by Denny O'Neill dragging up
the alcoholism again and making Tony a stinking drunk for years. I'd rather he was
an Immortus controlled murderer than go through that again. At least then, Immortus
was making him do it. ---alan

Last I knew, Rhodey didn't have any special marine salvage talents. He
runs a company that does marine salvage -- I'm sure he has plenty of
competent divers at his beck and call. But he *does* have experience and
talent wearing the Iron Man armor -- his skills would have been better
utilized backing Tony up and letting people who had done marine salvage
for years do that work.

Except he wasn't with Tony, he was with his salvage company supervising.
Sure, it would have been nice if he was there. Of course, it would be nice if
all the Avengers had been there, but that's not what happened.
