how's this?
okay. I just bashed Dave's Rant about Avengers 390 and wanted to listed
some specific reasons, but couldn't. So now here's some more on The
Crossing.
1) a strange guy shows up and warns the Avengers of their past. He seems
especially interested in Quicksilver and fam. Why? Because he calls Luna
his big sister. This is a yet to be born son of Quick and Crys coming back
from the future. We see Luna later in The Crossing also as a grown-up.
2) Anyway, what we have here is the mystery of the door coming into the
major storyline. it starts with Yellowjacket, who was in the future w/
the Guardians of the Galaxy, making The Crossing back to realtime and
space. Now, I guess that could mean they are in a parallel universe,
which often happens to time-travelers. I don't think so, though the
future scenes Yellowjacket sees are probably more "what ifs" than "will
bes". Then Yellowjacket gets killed when she reaches the present. By
Iron Man. Is it the real Iron Man or an evil twin? Is the "her" referred
to by Luna actually an evil Maria Stark (notice in gambling scene when the
room feels presence of Maria Stark. All throughout this the emphasis is
on Tony's past and his parents. That's the main mystery here, though
there are others. Namely, what's with the costume changes? Obstensibly,
everyone got caught up in the Avengers Anniversary party and changed in
order to "start over again." But it's fishy, and probably just an excuse
for Marvel to start over again. But Thor and Wasp (four wings?) seem
pretty whacked out. And who are all the people who attacked Gilgamesh?
And what was he doing here? Speaking of absent Avengers, if this was an
anniversary party, why did so few Avengers actually show up. There are a
buttload that should've been here. That was lame. If your going to use a
party as a plot device, then don't do it just to get a few select new
people to show up.
Ah, but it was good to see Wasp again.
One last note, and then maybe I described everything enough? (Sorry this
isn't very coherent. I stayed up too late last night rereading the
issues.)
In 390, the letters page brags about how avengers is all about story and
characters, not revealing outfits and pin-ups. Then why is it Crystal is
incapable of doing anything anymore with throwing her shoulders back and
what was that bathing suit? And Deathcry is sixteen, they say, but drawn
like she has a 25 year olds bod. And Magdalene wears short shorts and
tight shirts? Hmmm. Methinks ol' Mikey De'ato (how do you spell it?)
needs to a) calm his hormones and b) listen to the official editorial
position more. It's my number pet peeve about the Avengers right now.
(Namely, if you don't retcon a person's entire history, you shouldn't
retcon their body shape either. Crystal, though an adult, has suddenly
went from a C cup to a DDD cup, and she seems to know it with her flaunts.
Poor Black Knight didn't know what he was going to be missing when he
left.)

One of the most irritating things that has plagued this book over the past year
is the sloppiness. The TAKING AIM story was poorly executed with a lot of plot
blunders. There are some similar things in this book (where are the rest of the
ex Avengers?), but what the hey, it's summer and I can be forgiving. The art
was good, there were a lot of nice "AVENGER MOMENTS" (it's so good to have the
Beast back around--he's so much more fun in the Angst-less Avengers), there was
a battle scene in which Quicksilver didn't get knocked out after charging
blindly into some baddie, and the twist was good enough to have me counting the
days till the next installment. Tony Stark, the ultimate killing machine?
Nasty.
I'm glad to see Hawkeye and Wasp again. I would have liked to see some better
explanation why Wanda and Natasha both got new outfits at the same time
(like maybe they helped each other design them, since they are both leaders of
their team and have a lot in common). I haven't read the Pre-Crossing Avengers
issue yet, so maybe that's covered in that.
It was also good to see that Gilgamesh wasn't again the forgotten Avenger, even
if it does look like the end of the line.
Well, gotta go. I hear a distant knocking from my basement.

And some people did not think that Image has a negative influence on the industry.
Unfortunately Marvel seems to feel that since Image has art with no story, and is selling, and since Marvel has not had much in the story telling department in a long time, they should copy Image.
Another thing that bothers me is why everyone always has clenched teeth. They laugh, cry, fight, eat and breath with open lips and clenched teeth. Do all of the Avengers have lockjaw?

I thought "the Crossing" was an OK story, but I must admit that
it raised a buttload of questions. The biggest one being what
the deuce are they doing with Tony Stark? I hope to God that
the rumors about the existing Stark being an LMD are wrong.
That would be way ridiculous even for Marvel. I think its
pretty obvious that some major retcon of Ironman is occurring.
The future Luna referred to "the twins". The previous poster
thought this could refer to Tony Stark. So is the concept that
Stark has a twin brother? Maybe the original Ironman got hauled
through the doorway to the other dimension and his evil twin took
his place. The future scene near the beginning where Avengers
Mansion is under siege and Jarvis is going in saying, "I'm the
only one he'll recognize" seems to prove that they are going
to bring in a Tony Stark who has never seen the current Avengers.
It seems unlikely, but we should bear in mind that Wanda
and Pietro are twins. I don't think their mother Magda was especially
evil though.

Hey, if you would't have done it, I would have! ;)
Seriously, this is getting WAY out of hand. Soon we'll be talking about
Marvel the same way we're talking about Microsoft. Too bid and too greedy.
(Did you know Microsoft sells a part which costs them 5¢ to create for
$50!.)

Actually if you read Iron Man #319, Tony threw together this party in
approximately 24 hours...so it's quite plausible, though
disappointing, that many of the others were not gonna be there.

grin. More to the point (ouch!) - how the hell does she keep her
costume on? Chewing gum? Double-sided gaffer tape? Small, constantly
generated gusts of elementally controlled air? Enquiring minds want to
know....
