Ok, I loved this series as a kid and I got to thinking of doing these little
scenerios I dreamed up and used sculpted characters for. And I thought of
putting the X-men from "What if Wolverine was Lord of the Vampires?" vs
Wetworks. Uhm the weird fight aside I was wondering what the favorite What Ifs
were around here? Mine is obviously the one previously named ; )

The one with the original Bullpen as the Fantastic Four followed by Rick
Jones as the Hulk.

What if the "X-Men had stayed in Asgard". It wasn't perfect but it had
everything I wanted in a comic book; Dani goes scary, Doug gets some respect
(from Asgardians no less), Storm keeps her Art Adams designed Thunder god
leather outfit and Sunspot gets reduced to a skeleton!

My favorite would have to be "What If Spider-Man Kept the Alien Costume,"
from Vol 2 (or was it 3, counting the traitor IM one shot?), #4. I thought
the story was well written, tragic, and true to the characters motivations.
Plus you get to see Black Bolt take out a mountain...

Wouldn't it be neat if they packaged up and sold all the 'best' What
If's in paperback form? "What if" was such a great idea for a series,
but for some reason most of the stories weren't all that great (or
most people didn't think they were that great). Still, maybe there
would be a market for the best of them?

I loved the Avengers story from volume 1 with 3-D Man.

As a side note, my favorite unpublished What If? story is What If the
X-Men had all their living members at the battle for Phoenix (X-Men
137)? They were pretty well trashed by the Imperial Guard, but what
if Ice Man, Havok, Polaris, Kitty, Sunfire, and Banshee joined them?
Would that have turned the tide? If so, what repercussions would
there have been? If I ever hit the lottery, I will pay Byrne
(demanding he draw in his old detailed style), Austin, and Claremont
anything they demand to put it together. Oh well...

Well, it has been a long time, so I am sure I will forget an issue
that someone else will mention, then it will be a slap to the forehead
and the obligatory "DOH!" but off the top of my head...

The Infinity Gauntlet What If?, especially with the Silver Surfer who
is my favorite all-time Marvel character. I *liked* all of the
Infinity stories, though I will agree I shouldn't have had to buy 20
Marvel issues I would never otherwise have read to get the story and I
am sure people collecting just those issues didn't appreciate the
Infinity stories...

The Kurt Busiek issue of The Punisher receiving Spidey's alien
costume. Lots of reasons, but the top ones are: I never "got" Venom,
so any other outcome for that costume is preferrable; it showed some
of the real possibilities of the costume Brock never explored (not a
terribly imaginative fellow) without being unbelievable; and because
it captured and defined the Punisher's psyche and motivation better
for me.

I have considered several scenarios for better stories involving the
costume. The one I play with the most in my head these days would be a
great supplemental Spidey title that would fit into continuity but
would stand alone from the other Spidey titles. It would showcase
Spiderman's growth as a hero and as a person; sort of mirroring my own
life (imagine that!) and also delve into how Spidey is
received/perceived by the rest of the MU.

Now that I have visited Priest's digital pages and read everything my
mouse could click on, I have some idea how to script the stories...up
to about 24 issues, I figure. Now if only I lived in New York, and had
the spare time to hang around the Marvel offices...

This is a painful question to think about :) Among the comics I lost when
I moved in high school were a complete run of What If? vol.1 (also lost,
most of the Avengers issues from about #70-120. argh.)

Long enough ago that I'm sure I've forgotten many of the stories that were
my favorites.

But among them - What if Gwen Stacy had lived, What if Rick Jones had
become the Hulk, What if Jarella hadn't died, and of course, #1, What if
Spider-Man had joined the FF.

Honorable mention to the Marvel Super Heroes RPG module, "Gate of What
If," with Victor, the heroic Dr Doom.

Hi,
Thanks for the e-mail.I personally think that since
there were four Spider-Man books out at the time, two could have been
devoted to the new Ben Reilly Spider-Man and the other two for the fans
who wanted to see the continued marriage and parenthood of Peter Parker
and Mary Jane. This way you appeal to both fans. You could have still had
the return of Norman Osborn, the new(and MUCH better)
Jackal,Kaine,Spider-Cide,etc.,setting up plenty of future plotlines.
The way Peter and Ben got along was great. It was one of the better
relationships in comics at the time.Plus,it was also good to see some of
the villains(like Mysterio) get an updated look.I guess a better What
If? woud be,What If Marvel Actually Thought Out Most of Their
Stories,First?.But,I guess the title would be too long. <g>
Spider-Girl is a good series that I'm glad hasn't been
cancelled.I don't agree with everything that Tom does for other
books,but his Spider-Girl is a good read,Plus I like seeing Johnny
Storm(Human Torch) back with his wife Lyja and a teenage Franklin
Richards over in Fantastic Five.

It takes the comic divergence and diverges it even more.

Marvel did release a trade paperback called the Best of What If?

If I remember it had:

What if Spider-Man joined the Fantastic Four?
What if Daredevil became an agent of Sheild?
What if Korvac defeated the Avengers?
What if Jean Gray had remained the Phoenix?
What if the Fantastic Four never got their powers?

And a couple others. Its a good buy if you find it!

I resubmitted the synopsis every time the book got a new editor. Not
one of them ever so much as responded to these pitches.

A few of my favorites:

- What if the Avengers Lost the Evolutionary War? -For a simple reason:
the humans kick ass!

- What if the Vision Conquered the World? story 2: Dystopia -It showed
how nasty the collective forces of the bad guys could be.

- What if Jane Foster Found Thor's Hammer? -I thought it was neat seeing
someone how Jane would have handled Thor's battles.

- What if Dr. Strange had not become Master of the Mystic Arts? - Great
story about the little guy overcoming adversity.

What if Hulk were a barbarian? At first the concept seemed so stupid...I
mean, what if a big, hulking, brute, savage, dumb guy were a barbarian?
That is like asking what if a fan of Star Trek were a nerd? I thought the
idea was retarded then, but it still sticks with me for some reason. That
cover of Hulk wielding an enormous axe astride a pile of corpses with
Jarella under his other arm is still in my grey matter for some reason.

What about issues of What If from the second run. Most of these replies have
come from the first volume of the series. The second run went much longer and
there might be some gems hidden within.

These are the ones I have:
1 ...The Avengers Lost the Evolutionary War?
3 ...Steve Rogers Had Refused to Give Up Being Captain America?
5 ...The Vision Had Destroyed the Avengers?
6 ...The X-Men Lost Inferno?
7 ...Wolverine Was An Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.?
14 ...Captain Marvel Had Not Died?
19 ...The Vision Had Conquered the World?
22 ...The Silver Surfer Had Not Escaped Earth?
29 ...Captain America Had Formed the Avengers?
55 - 56 ...The Avengers Lost Operation: Galactic Storm?
59 ...Wolverine Led Alpha Flight?
66 ...Rogue Possessed the Power of Thor?
97 - Black Knight in Camelot with Doctor Doom story
108 Carnage as Silver Surfer story
109 Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom springboarding off #236 "Terror in a Tiny
Town!"
113 Tony Stark becomes Sorceror Supreme
114 Secret Wars sequel

Any other good ones?

The Spidey reboot/relaunch was actually the What If storyline. IMHO.
Looking forward to the day DeFalco writes the "What Really Happened Between

There was a What If? where the heroes had never goten back from the secret wars

Why is it so hard for people to comprehend that the only way to fix the
Spider-titles (albeit in a weak, backtracking kinda way) was by killing Ben
Reilly? The only way to prove Pete was the real deal was by having Ben dying
of the degenerative virus. Though the character interaction was indeed fun,
all it really was was Peter talking to an alternate version of himself,
which would eventually get tiring.
What would Ben Reilly solo titles bring that regular Spidey titles didn't? A
single Spider-Man? That would be interesting for a bit, but just like in the
regular titles, couldn't sustain the title. The focus now should be on
making the two ongoing titles the best they can be.

So far, I like what JMS is doing, and the JRJR art is amazing. Not too sure
about PPSM. Though Jenkins is great, and has some wonderful character
pieces, you don't really get a sense anything major is going to happen. Not
to mention that Buckingham's art while passable, is kind of bland and
forgettable. I'd be game for someone else taking over the art chores.
Anyway, those are my two cents.

The problem with the Spider-books wasn't Ben Reilly, but the writing
period. After Ben was killed, there was no great increase in quality
Spider-Man tales. In some ways it became worse: The Return of Aunt
May,Mary Jane coming back and separating from Peter, etc. So far,IMHO the
only writer that has really breathed life back into Spider-Man lately
has been J.Michael Straczynski.Paul Jenkins has done a few interesting
things, but in some areas he's way off. It's all about writing.Yes,you can
have two different Spider-Men,leading two very different lives and
adventures without taking away from either and you get to appeal to both
fan groups instead of one.As for Marvel making the remaining
Spider-titles the best they can be,that's what they should've done way
before now. That's what their focus should always be on any book they
come out with.

That's my two cents on the entire situation.I'm not trying to attack
your opinion,just explain mine.Thanks.

The first what if I read will always have a special place in my heart. So much so
that I ran out years later to replace the copy I had lost/tossed.

"What if Spider-man's Uncle Ben had lived?"

I love it since they use a lot of the original artwork from the 60's/70's. Really
gives it an silver age taste to it.

For a minute I though we were talking about the "What The!?" series. That would
have to be the one with Toast Rider and his Pennies stare. There's just something
about a flaming piece of toast riding the highway shooting Abe Lincolns out of his
