IS THE KREE/SKRULL TPB WAR REALLY WORTH $25 BUCKS?

If only for the line "They're asleep... like a trio of malevolent babies." -
Cap referring to the captured Skrulls, making me wonder if this is his
normal mode of conversation, maybe he hires a speech-writer... :o) I nearly
dropped the book laughing when I read that line...

I think so. Another great reprint trade from Marvel.

No, in the sense that no comic is. Yes, in the sense that it's cheaper than buying
Near Mint versions of the back issues, and it really is a fun (if totally
sensationalistic) story that uses a lot of comics lore very well. Thomas really
loves digging out the Golden Age greats, and this is basically a template for how
his career progressed. Plus, Neal Adams was at an early height of creative ability
here. I bought it and I plan to take all week reading it, and so far it's been
fascinating.

For a second reprint I don't think so.

I have the all run of Avengers V1 and I think that a TPB of the
Avengers/Defenders crossover or Galactic Storm would be better.

I've read a lot of posts complaining about the reprints in the new TPB (mostly
the color). Comparing the TPB paper to the original pulp comics is bound to
show differences. However, does anyone have the 2-issue Avengers Special
Edition from a few years back, that reprints the Kree/Skrull war on Baxter
paper, and the new TPB? How do those compare?

Assuming the K/S War TPB comes off as a success (in fandom, financially
for Marvel, what have you,) can we start campaigning for another
Avengers TPB? Korvac Saga keeps coming up. That was already reprinted
a number of years ago. Maybe a re-release would be possible. But as
far as I can tell, there's never been a reprint of the Celestial Madonna
saga. (Has there?) I'd like to see this. Having started reading
comics in the 80's, I never had a shot at buying these stories that came
out before I was born, yet these stories KEEP ON having considerable
signifigance to modern continuity. I've been able to piece together 95%
of what I need to know from flashbacks, the OHOTMU and the occasional
letter page, but it's never the same as reading the actual stories.
Plus...

During a thread here a while back, many said that the Celestial Madonna
story was the "ultimate Avengers story." Having never read it, I'm not
sure I'd agree, as Mantis and Swordsman haven't had much to do with the
book since then. But it sounds like it was the ulitmate Engleheart era
Avenger story, to be sure. (I grew up loving Engleheart on WCA.) Let's
see this TPB!

(I hope to someday read the Serpent Crown Affair, too, but I think I
might actually be able to find and afford those issues. No Giant-Size
issues to track down, for one thing.)

I'll second that. The Kree-Skrull War TPB is, I believe, the first
one I've bought since the Korvac Saga TPB. (And I wasn't even a
regular Avengers reader back then.)

I realize I'm not the typical fan, but I'm really not interested in
most of Marvel's solo heroes (e.g. Spider-Man) or anything X-Men
related. Actually, as far as TPBs go, it seems I only buy the older
"cosmic" ones. I didn't buy the Secret Wars, Thanos Quest, or
Infinity Whatever TPBs because I already own the limited series. (And
although I suppose a TPB is more convient and goes on a shelf better,
you can't lay them flat and read them like you can a standard comic
book.)

The coloring is *much* better in the 2 issue edition. It falls outside of
the line repeatedly in the TPB, totally disgracing the gorgeous art work.
Nice to have all the issues in one place, but when I want to read the Neal
issues, I'll resort to the much more flattering baxter.

Funny, that's not what Neal said. He didn't care for the coloring in the Baxter
issues, and wanted to make sure the TPB would be shot from the original film.

I can't imagine Neal Adams being too happy with the results. At worst,
some panels in the TPB looks like a coloring book gone bad.

I have all of THE AVENGERS, Vol .1, (#1-30 in the Marvel Masterworks series), and
GIANT-SIZE AVENGERS #2, the second chapter of the Celestial Madonna storyline,
is, to me, a perfect Avengers comic: action; drama; a genuinely moving and
non-trivial death of an Avenger; and a mind-boggling treatment/extension of the
Kang-Rama Tut continuity.
