I may have to cancel my subscriptions that I just bought.

I received my first issue today in a skimpy plastic bag with only a
flimsy cardboard insert.

The back of the issue was torn because it looks like the high speed
postal mail handler had gouged a hole through the plastic into the
book, at least it wasn't the front cover. The whole binding had
numerous score marks and a tear onto the front cover.

There is no way that I will be able to acept any issues in this
condition. I have collected for over thirty years and while I used to
accept the old way of issues being folded in half with the
subscription crease that was only beause I didn't know any better. I
can accept an issue or two a year being lightly damaged. But they
really have to re-evaluate their packaing scheme. When I send a comic
to someone I bag and board both sides then attach the closed comic
inside two layers of carboard and send it in the very least a durable
manilla envelope.

I hope this isn't their normal way of delivery.

I used to subscribe directly from Marvel years ago and often ran into
the same problem...that, along with the fact that I like to browse, is
why I prefer to get most of my stuff from a comic shop rather than
direct.

Strike 2 today. This time looks like someone dropped the comic on the
top corner and dented the edges.

I should be receiving a few more this week, if I get another damaged
comic then I have to go back to the retail route or head over to
mailordercomics.

I would definitely switch to mailordercomics. People on this board
and others are treated far, far better than direct from Marvel.

I used to get mine from Marvel, and it was a nightmare. Multiple
copies of the same comic, other times, where for example issue 50 was
due to be followed by issue 51, the opposite would happen, with issue
51 turning up before 50. Then the comic might not turn up at all. I
remember getting one issue where, as soon as I took it out of the
plastic wrap, the cover fell off. It was not even stapled on.

Gave up after that, but by then Marvel were going down hill. So I
stuck with DC and trades.

Marvel has used two kinds of plastic wrapping material, and which one
they use seems to vary by title. The Ultimate comics used to be mailed in
the stretchier, harder-to-tear plastic wrap, but I think the latest
Ultimate Spider-Man came in the regular wrap. Neither wrap aims to be a
substitute for a real plastic comic bag.

Wow. I've had direct-from-Marvel subscriptions for years and only maybe
once that I recall did one arrive really mangled. Lost? Occasionally.
Delayed so long in the mail that issues arrived out of order? Once in a
while. Bent or curled to fit in my tiny mailbox? Hard to avoid if I have
a lot of other mail that day. The vast majority I get aren't damaged,
though.

Someone posted that Marvel was good about sending replacements when
something arrived damaged. You might give that a try.

OTOH, if your local Post Office has a mail-mangling sorter or something,
that'll become evident soon enough.

So far I have received seven issues, even though they are about 1 week
behind in sending me a few.

The one I first started the thread with was the most damaged. Three
others have been dropped on corners and bent. The other three have
some flaws but not unlike I wouldn't see at the shop.

I am re-evaluating my stance. Afterall, these are modern issues.
Certainly no where near the value of my older comics and probably
won't ever be. But I am getting a full year of susbscriptions for $18.
So I am getting about 2/3 rds of my comics for free at retail value or
about 2/5 ths for free at discounted rates. Considering how many I buy
yearly I figured my retail savings was $400-500 a year. I still have
to buy One Shots, Mini Series, Annuals, etc at retail though because
they don't have an option to just subscribe to everything.

I will see what happens over the next few weeks and try to keep track
of what damage I experience.

Oh, the horror! I remember when I decided to try subscribing to Conan
The Barbarian back around 1971 I guess it was, and the first issue
that came in was an issue with a particularly gorgeous Barry Smith
cover, #12 I think, just folded /hard/ and slipped in a little brown
wrapper... pretty worthless, and I gave up on even considering
subscribing to anything else from Marvel... that and all the rip offs
from the Marvelmania club at that time. Still waiting on some posters,
buttons or something I ordered from those guys.

I'll simply reiterate what I've said before: I never had a single copy of
the one Marvel title to which I've ever subscribed (Simonson-era THOR)
arrive in anything other than a mangled form. I wouldn't subscribe
directly for any price higher than "free" -- and I'd order back-up copies
of all the books to which I'd be subbing, to make sure I'd have something
readable.

Also, let me be perfectly clear, as I have always said, there is an
option that not only saves you a lot of money but also gets your books to
you in excellent condition. You may not pay a mere buck-and-a-half on
every title, but Big-Two $2.99 cover-priced books run mostly in the
$1.49-1.79 range (with occasional 75 specials), while the dreaded $3.99
titles are usually in the $1.99-2.39 area (with the stray 99 offer). And
you don't have to order a whole year of anything to get these deals. And
you get these prices on minis, one-shots, specials, and even trades and
HCs (the last of which are offered with a 40-50% break off cover).

DCBS. I don't work for 'em, I'm no affiliate. I'm a customer who's been
done right by them for several years, and a customer who wants to see
other folks get that same opportunity.

Don't Mail Order comics and others actually include the annuals and
other specials and one offs in the price of their subscription?

Subscriptions from Marvel do not include annuals, one-shots, limited
series, cross overs, specials, or anything except the sequentially numbered
issues of the specific title to which you're subscribed. Anything else you
have to find elsewhere. My local comic book store owner knows which of
those I want, saves such books for me, and gives me the subscriber
discount. :)

I know MArvel never give annuals with subscriptions. I used to have
one, from Marvel, and never got the freaking annuals. Irritated the
hell outta me.

Mailordercomics, and Milehighcomics do actually include the annuals in
the subscriptions, and I think one can order a crossover or two with
comics direct companies. They also properly package their comics
instrong envelopes with bubble wrap and so forth.

Ah. I've known about about Mile High Comics for years but don't recall
hearing of Mail Order Comics before.

That's good to know. In my case, the owner of my local comic book shop
helped create XCon (in Myrtle Beach), so I'm happy to give some of my
business to the local store even if doing so costs a little more than the
absolute lowest source. :)

Yeah, I totally agree, go for your local source if the price

definitely shop elsewhere.

My brother recently had to buy a new battery for his mobile/ cell
phone. To buy local was 50 quid, to get it on the web, with shipping
and all included, was 17 quid. He chose the internet, as it was far
more reasonable. If the battery for his phone had been 20 quid he
more than likely would have bought local, but since there was such a
big price gap, he went straight for the internet.
