What is the Ultraverse?

I stopped collecting comics a while ago but have just recentlly begun
to get back into them. I have noticed in this newsgroup references to
the "Ultraverse" and it seemed to somehow involve the infinty gems.
The Infinty Gauntlet was my favorite series of all time, and if there
is more on the subject I would really like to know about it. Any info
would be greatly appreciated.

The Ultraverse is a catch-all name for the superhero line published by
Malibu Comics after the Image studios left them to publish their own
books. When Malibu was bought by Marvel, the Ultraverse became little
more than an "Earth-2" for the Marvel Universe. To increase interest in
Malibu's titles, crossovers with Marvel characters became extremely
frequent, and several characters became permanent fixtures in Malibu
titles (the Black Knight joined the Ultraverse's premiere super-team,
UltraForce).

As to how the Infinity Gems were involved in all of this, I can't be
specific. Suffice to say a sixth gem was revealed (possibly indiginous
to the Ultraverse--I didn't read this story) and Malibu character Rune
ended up with all of them. Of course, now that Marvel has cancelled all
of the Malibu books and ceased to use its characters, I would presume
this is no longer the case...

Seventh, actually. From what I understand it was sentient, and evil, and
brought all the other gems to it, and they all became sentient (the soul
gem, of course, already was), and after joining together to become some
sort of evil beast, which was defeated by the Ultraverse heroes, they
separated and evolved into humanoid type creatures that went their
separate ways.

All in all, a pretty stupid story, which is why it is seemingly being
disregarded by Marvel.
