He has super strength, flight, invulnerability, and some major eye beams.
When written correctly, he kicks serious ass. He's beaten the entire
Fantastic Four by himself at one point, and knocked the shit out of
Colossus.
The problem is, his powers are all psionic in nature, and depend on his
confidence. And since his powers are pretty awesome, he's always very
confident to the point of arrogance. If he doubts himself, his psionics go
away, and he is vulnerable for that instant.
For example...when fighting Reed Richards, Gladiator hit him in the chest
with all his strength. Acomplished nothing. What he didn't know was that it
was really Captain America taking the blow with his impact-absorbing shield.
Since Gladiator doubted his strength at that second, Reed was able to knock
him out with a punch.
Then when he fought Cannonball, Gladiator again hit him as hard as he could.
Cannonball used a never-before-seen trick to absorb the kinetic energy of
the punch into his blast field. Gladiator was amazed, dropped his power, and
Sam knocked him out. Get it?
And then there's the Hulk....the Hulk just plain kicked his ass....
SEAN
So the one foe who could permanently defeat him would be Mesmero. He'd
hypnotize him into doubting himself, fill him with self-loathing, and
leave him like that.

Basicly he should start kicking ass again, because he only
gets the respect he deserves in FF.
Have this guy toss around Ultron or something, then maybe
people will take him serously.

Before you buy.
I think Supreme did get the best licks in, but Gladiator did not really
get his butt kicked. Supreme got in his best shots when Gladiator was
distracted with saving lives.
Gladiator was pretty much created because Byrne wanted to write
Superman but was working exclusively for Marvel. He's Superman.

Just one thing I want to know here... I'm not challenging the maths of this,
because frankly I dont' care, but the one thing that bothers me is - you've
posted this message THREE TIMES. Once as a sucessor to the original, and
again as a separate post. Why?

Since he's part of the Shiar Empire's version of the Legion of Superheros, I
assumed he was based on Mon-el. Either way, his power level should be at the
Kryptonian/Daximite level.

Yeah, that was cool. Xavier totally psychic-bitch-slapped him. :)
In the next issue, Gambit hit Gladiator straight in the gut with an entire
deck of charged cards. It was the first (and hell, I think only) time he'd
used that much power against someone. We didn't see Gladiator after that for
another issue, but I'd have loved to see how that affected him. Did it hurt
him, shake him up, or did he barely feel it?

And please, any writers out there, have Gladiator kick
someones ass.

Nope. He's Superboy. Dave Cockrum and Chris Claremont created the Legion of
Super-Heroes swipe team and named it the Imperial Guard. Gladiator is the
stand-in for the pre-Crisis Superboy/Mon-El character.
Byrne's first issue of Uncanny featured Gladiator, but he'd already been created
by CC and Cockrum. Byrne did define his powers in the FF issue, though, and it's
easy to see how the character is a stand-in for the DC Superman/boy type
character.
My favorite issue featuring Gladiator and dealing with his confidence-based
psionic powers was during the Trial of Reed Richards arc. Galactus makes an
appearance and scares the hell out of the crowd. Gladiator says something to the
affect of "Take care, Majestrix, I may not be able to protect you from such a
threat." May not or may be!
In his mind, Gladiator has a chance against the world devourer.
IMO, he's not smart enough to outwit Galactus and his brute force wouldn't be
enough to defeat him, but I think it's cool that Gladiator thinks he has a shot.
The only other single individuals that have a shot at taking down the big G are
the Surfer and Thor.
Might be someone else, but it's not coming to mind right now.
Alan
My statement was completely off. I do think that Byrne was experimenting
with some concepts he had for Superman when he defined Gladiators powers
in that FF issue.

No. It wasnt Thor. It was Eric Masterson, aka Thunderstrike. One of
the best moments in that really rather good crossover. Eric's at the
end of his tether, Gladiator was laying waste to the whol Avengers
crew, and Thunderstriek goes ape on him. I cant recall who was
watching - Cap, Iron Man, Quasar or whatever - but they got scared
alright.
And he beat Gladiator by calling down Living Lightning, stunning
Gladiator for a few seconds and then whaling away on him with Mjolnir.
It remains one of my favourite comic book scenes ever.
Which is why I got so annoyed to find out recently that he had been
offed. The guy who defeated Gladiator would never die!

The Surfer? Are you joking? Galactus *gave* the Surfer his powers, and
smacks him around when he gets out of line. I suppose you could pull the
tired old "I must feed, I am weaker than I have been in aeons" bit to
make Galactus weaker than the Surfer, but under ordinary circumstances,
nah.
Key words: 'have a shot'. Doesn't mean 'can'. Means a 'chance'.

Uhm, Gladiator, not Galactus.
Let's see, Gladiator is the M'onel analog in the Imperial Gaurd, so he's nearly
invulnderable, he's very strong, he can fly, does he have some sort of
laser-vision, too?
Shawn
There was a nother team member (don't remember his name) who was the Ultra-Boy
doppleganger, so presumably he had all the same/similar powers of Gladiator, but
could only use one at a time.
And Astra could go immaterial, and Oracle's the psychic, and there was a Colossal
Boy type too, I think.
