Darkseid & The Anti-Life Equation

So, I'm watching the rerun of Superman The Animated Series where Orion
shows up and he has the motherbox explain the who New God scenario and
they mention Darkseid's quest for the Anti-Life Equation. This made me
remember the Cosmic Odyssey mini where it was revealed that the
Anti-Life Equation was not a formula, but an actually a living thing
and finding it was a huge mistake. Is that still continuity or does
Darkseid still search for it?

CO is very much out of continuity - except for the John Stewart stuff.
Anti-Life is not a living being, it is a formula. However, since Orion
gained and then lost it back in his series a couple years ago, it
hasn't been on Darkseid's mind much (he's usually getting a generic
whooping from Superman whenever we see him anyway - although thanks to
Grant Morrison's SEVEN SOLDIERS, apparently Darkseid won the
Apokolips/New Genesis war - jury's still out regarding the continuity
or longevity of that development, and the New Gods' role in 7S as it
is).

Yeah, it's somewhat annoying that a series that was mostly garbage had
such an important impact on one character. So, it's in continuity
because of John Stewart, but it's out of continuity because of all of
the stupid stuff (the Anti-Life Equation being a creature, Thanagar's
position in the galaxy being pivotal to the galaxy's survival (hello,
Rann-Thanagar war), etc).

Well, the particulars of John's subplot can probably easily be
explained as a seperate adventure, that had nothing to do with the
Anti-Life Equation. Big yellow bomb blows up planet (or something like
that): sounds easy enough to blame a basic GL foe, or some 1-time
threat, for that.

How so was it garbage? I understand the whole "anti-life equation is a
Lovecraftian monster" nonsense might have offended some New Gods fans, but
Cosmic Odyssey had WONDERFUL art, and I actually enjoyed reading the story
as well. I was in college at that time, and I remembered my non-comic
reading friends exclaiming how great the art and the printing quality were,
that they hadn't realised comics were no longer rags little kids read.

But you're referring to the aethestics, which were indeed good. Even
though I don't care for its violations of New Gods continuity, the art
is beautiful, it was a fun story and thus it still remains a part of my
ever-dwindling comic collection.

I really did not much care for the art, and I found the set up so
contrived that the suspension of belief required to enjoy the story
was difficult. The living ant-life equation was not so much offensive, as
so inconsistent with the New Gods stories that it made Darkseid seem like
an idiot for not noticing the character of the equation.
