Sorry to bring up this x-over which have come out months ago but i
just read recently and cant stop admiring it ! This is a x-over which is
low in hype (cf. Onslaught) but better in quality (yeh i've read
Onslaught....another slugfest x-over....yawn).
The Final Night is not about heroes vs villains but it's about humans
(and superhumans) vs nature. Don't know hum much of the idea came from
Twister (as in Supes book recently). Most parts of the story are also
heart-warming. I would put this x-over above Underworld Unleashed.
The story is also quite intelligent. Having consultation with experts
really enhances the story.
Karl Kesel, IMO, has been underrated mainly because he is well known
as one of Superman's writers and you know how bad Superman books
sometimes (it might be due to the fact that Superman books cross-over
toe ach other everyweek. It restricts the writers too much). But let
him loose like in Daredevil or Final Night....he's good !

That's perfectly all right...we bring up comics older than that all the
time (Hey, Reign of the Supermen was cool, wasn't it?)

I personally think it has something to do with the "backbone"
mini-series format used for FINAL NIGHT, as opposed to the
"bookends" for Onslaught. FINAL NIGHT only requiredthat you read
the four issues and whatever comics in your usual list happened to
be tie-ins. Onslaught, though, cringed on the reader buying all
umpteen chapters of the story in other books, so if _I_ had read it,
for example, I'd have to buy X-MEN, FF, AVENGERS, and others to
follow Onslaught _and_ buy my regular Marvel books. This _never_
worked for DC's annual crossovers--why did Marvel even bother?

I'm not sure the comparison is valid. _Twister_ was about some
storm-chasers running around watching interesting objects fly by.
In FINAL NIGHT (and that Supes two-parter), the heroes are trying to
_stop_ the disaster, to challenge the wrath of nature. The characters
in _Twister_ already knew they couldn't stop a tornado, which is a
mighty big difference to me.

And _Twister_ itself can't be given credit for coming up with the idea
of man vs. nature, of course.

Underworld was pretty neat (loved how Trickster beat Neron), but
FINAL NIGHT is the king of the hill as far as recent DC crossovers
go (I'll save judgement on LEGENDS and MILLENIUM). To use a phrase my
brother coined, "It's Keselicious!" Not much can beat that.

It certainly gives Karl more to write about. Elements like the sun
going hypernova managed to put twists and turns in a sotry where the
bad guy is a giant _drain clog_. Im-press-ive.

RRRRGH! Jim SMASH!

I can't blame any bad points of the Superbooks on crossovers. Some of
the better Superman stories have been crossovers. There's certainly
something to be said for single-issue stories (After "Power Struggle"
we'll be seeing more of them), but I don't think it restricts any of the
writers too much.
