Superman (or CM) - Captain Marvel
Supergirl (or PG) - Ms. Marvel
Batman - Daredevil
Wonder Woman - Valkyrie
Flash - Quicksilver
Blue Beetle - Spider Man
Firestorm - Human Torch
Aquaman - Sub-Mariner
Lobo - Wolverine
Sarge Steel - Sgt. Fury
Red Tornado - Vision
Darkseid - Thanos
The Chief - Professor X
Elongated Man - Mr. Fantastic
Peacemaker - Punisher
Richard Dragon - Shang Chi (is this guy still alive?)
Dr. Fate - Dr. Strange
Luthor - Kingpin
Zatanna - Scarlet Witch
Green Arrow - Hawkeye
Here are a few that may be stretching it...
Captain Marvel - Thor
Green Lantern? - Silver Surfer?
Orion?? - Warlock??
Flame on!
Solomon Grundy.
> Hawkman?
Angel.
>Captain America?
Mr. America
>Cyclops?
That's a tough one. The closest I can come to the theme
(powers uncontrollable without costume) is Wildfire
of the LSH.
>Superman (or CM) - Captain Marvel
>Supergirl (or PG) - Ms. Marvel
>Batman - Daredevil
Okay.
>Wonder Woman - Valkyrie
Valkyrie is close, but not prominent enough within the
DCU.
>Flash - Quicksilver
>Blue Beetle - Spider Man
okay.
>Firestorm - Human Torch
Firestorm is closer in spirit to Nova. Human Torch more
closely corresponds to Fire.
>Aquaman - Sub-Mariner
Okay.
>Lobo - Wolverine
Lobo I'd match to Fight man. Wolverine is closer to Timber
Wolf.
>Sarge Steel - Sgt. Fury
>Red Tornado - Vision
>Darkseid - Thanos
>The Chief - Professor X
All right
.
>Elongated Man - Mr. Fantastic
Elongated Man is primarily a detective, while MR. F is
a scientist. I'd match EM with golden age hero Thin
Man and Mr. F with the Atom.

fair enough.

Not much of a stretch.

>which include heroes & villains of similar powers & themes. Here's a few easy
>ones which you may or may not agree with. Any others? Who would be the
>counterpart for the Hulk? Hawkman? Captain America? Cyclops?
The Golden Age Hawkman may have inspired Marvel's Red Raven
Captain America bears some similarity to Commander Steel
Rampage from the Superman books is similar to the She-Hulk and the original
Blockbuster is reminiscent of the Hulk.
Cyclops seems to be rather unique in powers and rather generic in personality
>Superman (or CM) - Captain Marvel
For Superman you could also use Gladiator (Shiar version) or Aquarian too. One
has the origin the other the powers.
>Supergirl (or PG) - Ms. Marvel
Well the last name and general appearence match- and if we hold to your Captain
Marvel as counterpart argument there is a connection.
>Batman - Daredevil
Moon Knight is another possibility.
>Wonder Woman - Valkyrie
What about Thundra
>Flash - Quicksilver
For speed powers- you are right. But the characters have nothing in common
but powers.
>Blue Beetle - Spider Man
Here is the other end of the spectrum from Flash/Quicksilver. Blue Beetle
(the Ted Kord one) and Spidey were both designed by Steve Ditko so Kord may
have been written and drawn to be Spider-man but without the powers.
>Firestorm -Human Torch
The characters are too different. Firestorm is two guys meged with atomic
restrcturing powers, the Torch is a guy with flame powers.
>Aquaman - Sub-Mariner
Aquaman was an obvious rip-off of the more popular Sub-Mariner at first.
>Lobo - Wolverine
I can see the comparison- bad attitude, healing factor.
>Sarge Steel - Sgt. Fury
OK- I can see this too although Fury has a wider use.
>Red Tornado - Vision
>Darkseid - Thanos
Thanos has been admitted to be a takeoff on Darkseid by his creator
>The Chief - Professor X
Heck, the Doom Patrol could also be seen as the Fantastic Four (Negative
Man/Human Torch, Thing/Robotman- and the whole idea of four people banding
together)
>Elongated Man - Mr. Fantastic
A bit of a stretch (yes I know it is a bad pun). Reed is done seriously
while EM (and Plas) are played for laughs more often than not.
>Peacemaker - Punisher
Only the post-Crisis Peacemaker. The Adrian Chase Vigilante is closer to
Frank Castle.
>Richard Dragon - Shang Chi (is this guy still alive?)
I'll give you this one too
>Dr. Fate - Dr. Strange
I can see the connection- but other than weilding magic they have differing
styles.
>Luthor - Kingpin
Only after the 1986 reboot- before that Luthor was Dr Doom without Latveria
and magic.
>Zatanna - Scarlet Witch
One is a mutant with some sorcerous abiltiy- the other is a second generation
soreceror. One was married to an android. I only see superficial similarities
>Green Arrow - Hawkeye
Well- if you include the Mockingbird/Black canary relationship which was an
obvious copying- then I can see this.
>Here are a few that may be stretching
>it...
>Captain Marvel - Thor
Well the early Thor when it was assumed Blake was a human given the power of
Thor by the hammer is a close parallel.
>Green Lantern? - Silver Surfer?
As someone else pointed out Green Lantern is closer to Quasar (for Kyle) or
the Nova Corps (when you had a GL Corps) than to the Surfer.
>Orion?? - Warlock??
Don't really see the connection unless it is the opposition to
Darkseid/Thanos.
And I'm not sure if the obvious homages count
Squadron Supreme/original JLA
Imperial Guard/Legion of Superheroes
Avengers/Heroes of Angor (Silver sorceress, Wandjina, Jack B Quick, Blue Jay)
Reed Richards/The Cyborg Superman (his origin was a parody of the Fantastic
Four)
>And I'm not sure if the obvious homages count
>Avengers/Heroes of Angor (Silver sorceress, Wandjina, Jack B Quick, Blue Jay)
They were given a group name in JLQ#3 (Vindicators?). And more of the
group's membership, like Tin Man and their butler, were portrayed.

Another possibility.
Matt Murdock makes sense for a few reasons, besides the excellent treatment
given both characters by Frank Miller. Bruce Wayne studied law and almost
became a lawyer during his youth. Plus, Matt basically has the sensing
abilities of a bat while Bruce acts like he has a devil inside his own mind.
I basically saw the Kree Captain Marvel during the early 70s phase as being the
only one in Supe's (or Fawcett Captain Marvel's) power category. Also the "nega
band" thing when he changed places with Rick Jones was a blatant take on the GA
Cap. It seems every comic universe has to have someone in Superman's league,
witness Captain Marvel and Captain Atom (before DC bought them) and marvel's
Captain Marvel.
Yeah, if these guys ever fought, and there's just no way they could ever
encounter each other without a fight, it would be a never-ending bloodbath.
They'd keep on hacking and healing.
>>Green Arrow - Hawkeye

Good point! Black Canary = Mockingbird.

It's not a stretch at all! They're both geniuses (Ralph's a detective and Reed's a
scientist), they're both rich, their names both begin with "R" and they're both
married to a beautiful woman named Sue!
Umm...I don't mean that they're married to the same woman (though how's THAT for a
company crossover!?), I mean that they are each married to a woman whose first name
is Sue. Actually, I've been working on such a story just in case I ever become a
comic book writer and just in case every reader in the world changed their reading
habits to the point that a "Mr. Fantastic - Elongated Man" crossover could actually
be marketable!
Given that this is a very thin possibility...maybe I should just write it up and
run it in Fanzing.
Oh well.

What about Captain Mar-Vell back when he was linked to Rick Jones?
Rick would tap the nega-bands together to switch places with Mar-Vell.

Especially when you also consider that Hal and Nova both got their
powers from dying aliens. But Quasar=Kyle? Never! Wendell may be as
insecure as Kyle on occasion, but when it comes to skill, he's almost
on Hal's level. Kyle became GL because he was in the right place at
the wrong time. He wasn't even tested, like Hal was. Wendell was
specifically chosen by Eon to be the Protector of the Universe. It
was his destiny. Kyle would be more like Blue Marvel/Golden Age Marvel
Boy. A guy who just happened onto his weapon, does a lot of good with
it, but wasn't really _intended_ to have it.

OK, I get it now. The Cap/Cap connections was obvious, but Supes seemed weird.
How about a cross-company crossover featuring almost every character
named Captain something!
(Followed by a Doctor's convention.)
Not, exactly. Black Canary didn't have powers until the Silver Age.
In continuity? Who knows?

As far as powers go, Thor is the Superman analogue. On top of their
strength and flight, they both have an array of other powers
(Supes--heat/xray vision, super breath[hehe i still laugh at that one],
superhearing and sight; Thor--Mjolnir, weather control, opening
interdimensional gates). Neither are--Superman is perceived by many to be
on a god-level (Kingdom Come), and Thor is a god (the Kree CM just doesn't
reach that status). And though I think it would be a tough fight, I still
think Thor would win this one.

Point taken. My Quasar/Kyle comparison was only meant that both were the sole
possessors of the weapon- as opposed to the Nova Corps/GLC

Wasn't Wendell originally hired as a guard at Project Pegasus, and
when some villain attacked trying to get the bands, Wendell put them
on and started using them.
Also, Wendell looks up to Cap and wants to be like him. Kyle wants to
jump Wonder Woman.

Quasar's solo title was Mark Gruenwalds take on Green Lantern. Alot of
books/storylines he was connected with were "influenced" by DC characters,
case in point, the Squadron Supreme graphic novel (not the tpb reprint)
was a tribute/swipe/parody of/to Crisis on Infinite Earths.
To my knowledge there was no parallel to GL in Q's earlier appearences.

True, but he was a SHIELD agent assigned to protect the quantum
bands, and he felt that the most effective way to protect them was to
use them. When I say Wendell was destined to get them and become PotU,
I'm paraphrasing Eon in Quasar #2, who basically says that. As Eon's
latest choice for Protector, Wendell was fated to get the bands.
Others who used the bands and weren't "worthy" of them were vaporized
- Marvel Boy was eventually, as was the pilot who tested the bands in
Quasar #1. (Quasar's predecessor, Mar-Vell, was meant to get the
bands, too, but unfortunately the Marvel Boy, and later SHIELD, had
them.)
