So: where/when/how did Jade die? And what idiot made this decision?
Imagine my surprise seeing her among the dead in Levitz's latest JSA
issue, given that I've only been cherry-picking my author/character
favorites among DC publications for the past frew months, and have
little to no knowledge of various crises. (Imgaine my further surprise
at how disappointing Levtiz's JSA run has been thus far, but that's
another topic...)
Those Infinity Inc. characters just can't catch a freakin' break from
DC, can they? Is any one of them left hale, hearty, and morally
uncompromised at this point? Is Mr. Bones the one with the best outcome
to date? Sheesh.
Jade should be a major powerhouse character of the DCU--I can't really
understand the creator antipathy toward her.

It was in the Rann/Thanager War Special. A whole bunch of heroes
gathered in outer space to do...err, something...and Jade got killed
by...umm, something. I honestly don't remember.
Afterward her soul or essence or something was absorbed by Kyle
Raynor, who became Ion, the most powerful superhero in the universe.
But no one cares because he's written by Ron Marz, who is awful.
I've been going back and re-reading all of my old comics, and some of
the CrossGen stuff was written by Ron Marz. I'm remembering why I
stopped reading the books that he wrote. He's got some good story ideas
and interesting characters, but his story-telling style is just too
damn slow. It takes forever for him to get to the interesting part of
the story, and each issue feels like the story barely advanced at all.
He's one of the worst offenders in the current batch of writers who
write trade paperbacks instead of individual comic books.
When I saw that he was doing a 12 part Ion maxi-series, my first
thought was "Well, there's a story that would be 6 issues or less for
the exact same story if it was any other writer".

I thought she was a stranded ghost in JSA. At some point Kyle gave
Alan a portion of her 'energy' when he told him she had died in the
aftermath of the RTwar.

Reading the latest JSA prompted my question. She seems pretty clearly
dead in there, to me, and thinks herself to be, as well, as per her
line to Alan, telling him to get better and live because they'll have
all eternity to be together, but it's not yet time for that.
Also, unless someone's putting something over on the Thunderbolt, the
universe seems to think she's dead, too, since she shows up as part of
the brigade of dead JSAers Jakeem has T-Bolt summon to help him out.

The cover of JSA 85 feature's Jade (in shadow) along with these
indisputably-dead JSAers: Sandman, Batman, Starman, Mr. Terrific, with
the caption: "Raising the Dead."
On page 11 of JSA 85, Jakeem orders T-Bolt to take him "--to where the
ghosts live!"
On page 14, Jakeem has T-Bolt summon some ghostly help to fight
Craddock and his ghostly goons, and up pops Jade, Atom, Batman,
Sandman, and Mr. Terrific.
On page 15: T-bolt: "---leave the fighting to my old friends!" Jakeem:
"Dead friends, you mean! Jade, Atom, Sandman, Mr. Terrific, and ghost
Batman? He's not dead!" T-Bolt: "It's complicated, kid."
Page 16, Ghost-Jade says: "So strange--I'm back--but I'm not." in
lettering just like those used by the others.
Page 17, she continues: "Not real. Not alive. But even as a ghost--I
can take out trash like you. Strange--something calling--calling my
soul--(she sees Alan in his hospital bed)--No! Dad! Don't die, Daddy!
Don't die..."
Page 22: Jade appears (as a green, glowing ghost) over Alan's actual
hospital bed, and is seen by both Jay and Joan Garrick. Jade says to
her father: "The walls between the worlds are weak now, Dad. So I can
give you the last kiss I owe you. Live, Dad--we have forever to be
together again...they need you here for now..." and then vanishes. Alan
wakes up.
Seems intended to show her as pretty clearly dead, to me. No line about
being neither dead nor alive, just ones (page 16) commenting on her
ghostly state.

You give Marz more credit that I do. I thought "Well, there's a story
that might not such if it was written by another writer." Marz is on my
"Do Not Read" list.

She was a ghost. She only stuck around to make sure her father was
okay.
As if DC has ever needed a backdoor to bring characters back from the
dead...hell, given the recent trend of continuity changes and retcons
in the DCU, she'll probably show up somewhere before too long and
they'll pretend this death never even happened...hell,
Superboy-Prime's not dead so he can just bust out every once in a
while and punch reality...kind of like when I used to hit the side of
my old TV when the picture went all wonky.
This is techinically dead girlfriend #3 but Donna really shouldn't
count...when she died, she and Kyle had already been broken up long
enough for Kyle and Jade to hook up and break up twice...and her death
had absolutely nothing to do with Kyle...although this is brought up
in Ion #1.
