The 80 Page Giant did come out this week...and it was actually pretty
good for the most part...a lot better than anything in the regular
book since Johns left.
Dave Van Domelen, found it pretty uneven, but that's gonna happen with
anthologies.
Okay, I'll have to look for it. (My comic shop isn't getting any new
product so I'm having to travel to shops to find things.)
And if you just can't get your hands on it, I'll send you mine.
Yours too? The one I was going to decided to stop getting new books. I go
to another shop now.
The store can TRY to order things, but Diamond will just give them the
big symbolic middle finger. My store didn't get Mighty Avengers either, but
Hastings (a regional bookstore chain) did get it.
Dave Van Domelen, wishes Diamomnd had some real competition, but that's
not going to happen.
Yes, I just bought it today. It's not so good, actually.
My store got put on COD by Diamond so they don't get books unless they have
the money to pay for them on arrival. Having to go elsewhere while the
owner tries to save his business.
Not exactly.
Comic shops in my area are struggling. I live in a twin city college town
where there has been at least two comic shops for over twenty five years.
(At one point, I believe we had four comic shops in town.) There are also
comic shop in four towns within forty-five minutes from mine.
The store I was going to has been put on cash on delivery by Diamond. He is
selling toys and games at 50% off and back issues for a dollar to generate
cash while he tries to complete a deal to keep his business open.
Also one store in another town has closed for good and a store in yet
another town will probably be closing as well.
Plus, Diamond doesn't get it.
Before my store ran into its current problems, Diamond would call up to see
how the store was doing. The store would say not so good and Diamond would
be surprised. They would tell him that his sales are as good as fifteen
years ago and he would say no. The dollar amounts are about the same but he
was selling a lot more comics back then plus the prices were lower. (Which
also means he doesn't get as good of a discount because he isn't buying as
many books.)
That's going to help him a lot.

If he doesn't have books for sale, not much that =can= be done to help
the guy out.

So I'm suppose to stop buying comics completely since he can't get new
stock? He hasn't gotten new comics in FOUR weeks and may never get new
stock again.
Most people have already moved to one of the other shops.
I got it. I was largely bored. At least they gave us an "origin" for
Wildcat Jr.

His mother was a werepanther of some sort. But it's still kind of a
big coincidence - woman who gets pregnant by Ted just HAPPENS to have
cat-related powers. (It does not appear that she sought him out due to
similarity in the themes of their lives or anything.)
We still don't have an explanation for the weird coincidence that the
granddaughter of an entirely non-superpowered costumed heroine who
called herself Red Tornado just HAPPENS to have tornado-styled powers.
I'm sure they'll get to it someday. Like they "explained" Jefferson
Pierce's daughters' powers by retroactively declaring that his powers
were inborn (although suppressed), not acquired. Although what that
has to do with Thunder's powers I don't know - all she has in common
with dad are similar superhero names.
(I'm sure someone will explain to me how electrical abilities and
gravity-based abilities are very similar, based on the Unified Field
Theory. That kind of reasoning, of course, can be used to explain
anything at all. Someone once explained to me that Quicksilver could
move so fast because he was using his inherent magnetic powers,
inherited from his father Magneto, to manipulate his limbs at the
speed of thought. And Wanda....)

I thought it was generally better than the ongoing has been of
late...the only side story I didn't care about was Amazing Man's...and
there were some nice call backs to the last JSA series (which was much
better, in my opinion)

I don't know if it will ever see print but I have to believe that
Johns had an explanation in mind for Cyclone's powers...though I
suppose they could just toss it on the "they were all exposed to tons
of magic" pile along with things like slowed aging and Wildcat's 9
lives.
There was some mention of her being kidnapped and experimented on by TO
Morrow, wasn't there?
Or maybe Ma Hunkle based her name on something that was apparent in
their family history but wasn't talked about. Perhaps there was
someone with tornado related powers that kept them secret, refused to
use them for the good of mankind so Ma decided to do it, with or
without real powers. Cyclone is the first generation willing to take
the stage.

If there was, I must have missed it.
It was in the first issue of JSA where they recruit her, I believe. They
wanted to help her control her powers, and I think Mr. Terrific mentioned
something about her being kidnapped as a child.
