For the record, you can't kill a shapeshifter, particularly a Martian, by
stabbing him through the chest.
I am not even sure that Martians have discrete organs. Plastic Man doesn't,
but he is a special case. Ralph Dibny stretched more than anything else,
nowhere near Mr Fantastic (who I put on a par with Plas). You could stab
Ralph I think. Even Silar in Heroes stated that he could more nerve clusters
around his body because he was a shapeshifter. J'onn could imitate inanimate
objects, much like Chameleon Boy.
And J'onn wasn't even in his true Martian form, but that intermediate he has
been wearing (ugly BTW). If you want to get acceptance in the US
post-Invasion etc, you try to fit in a bit more. If I was him, I would have
gotten rid of a heart per se and had a dispersed circulation system - lots
of little peristaltic pumps. I might also disperse my brain throughout my
body to prevent major damage from a head shot - massively parallel
processing for the IT geeks. That's assuming, of coure, that I actually have
organs.
Michael Wood
Since he's a Black Lantern (or at least his body is) he's currently
dead. Not sure what his status will be after Blackest Night, though I'm
thinking he'll still be dead until someone get a great idea to bring him
back.
On the bright side he's still alive in the New Frontier and JLU
universes. And without the neo-Skrull look he took on.
Michael
I thought his weakness was fire? I suppose that's all out, nowadays?

The fire weakness was supposedly psychological. Then again, he never
claimed Superman level invulnerability. Of course, being able to turn
phantom, he really didn't need it. Being able to turn phantom makes
it really hard to stab him with a knife. Is that really the way they
killed him? Glad I never read it. What idiot writer did that?
That would be Grant Morrison.
It's always good to be aware of these things. He's in charge of
bringing back Bruce Wayne, too.
Brenda
Only because he ditched him in the first place...in a thoroughly
uncharacteristic and stupid way.
I don't know. being zoinked by Darkside back into the stone age hasn't
really been all that overused. I'm kind of looking forward to how
Bruce gets back. And I don't want Booster Gold or some other super
hero show up and rescue him. He has to do it by himself. After all,
he's the goddam Batman.
Batman used a gun...A GUN...that's just sick and wrong...Morrison
actually "killed" Batman in the same way back in the Rock of Ages
storyline in JLA but that was a much, much better story than Final
Crisis...the Batman lost in time bit would be a lot more interesting
to me if someone else were writing it...and if Marvel wasn't already
doing more or less the same thing with Cap...I just hope this doesn't
end the same way that one does with Bruce back but not Batman anymore.
The Batman with a gun thing never works. Writers keep trying it
though. Even John Broome gave Batman a gun in his first story.
Have you looked at the Doc Savage/Batman thing?
Brenda
It doesn't bother me with alternate versions like the one in the
recent Batman/Doc Savage storyline...but the mainstream Batman (as he
has evolved over the last 70 years) would NEVER use a gun.
Yeah. The gun thing still doesn't work.

...I can see Morrison claiming that Batman didn't shoot a gun at
Darkseid. It was some sort of "Cosmic Projectile Teleporter" that he
got off of Orion's corpse, and technically "wasn't a gun".

Batman CALLED it a gun...if he thought it was a gun, that's really all
that matters...it's crap.
>it's crap
...A new acronym for FC, then. CRAP - Crisis Raped And Prostituted.

The source is JOhn Broome's first Batman story. Which is probably the
first "new look" detective issue. You can find it in one of the
Showcase volumes I'm sure.
Batman also mentioned, the "gun" was armed with the same "bullet" that
killed Orion.
If the dark gods had taken over my planet and I could find a magic
bullet, I might learn how to use a gun too.
Not if you were Batman, you wouldn't...if anything, you'd invent a
magic batarang...and, even if you did betray your most sacred beliefs
by using a gun, you wouldn't just stand there like a moron and let the
bad guy fry you.
You can kill lots of shape-shifters by stabbing them through the
chest.
Vampires are shape-shifters.

Fire was *a* physical weakness of his... psychological weakness, I
mean, that he got over and got back. And it was something that all
martians had, was caused by the way his family/race died, was a
religious thing.
Has that cleared things up?

Batman was holding a gun after he disarmed the bad-guys...
So maybe he picked up the gun so they couldn't... and happened to be
pointing it at them.

...I'm trying to find that issue in my scans. Anyone know the issue
number, and whether it was in "Batman" "Detective" or "B&B"?
Would I use my formerly-secret lab that the parademons have chased me
out of, to invent a batarang that could insert itself into Darkseid's
flesh for the necessary deadly effect upon his human host body, just
so I could say, "At least I didn't shoot him"?

Maybe Batman just had to try a zero-phase soliloquy for this special
occasion in his life.
But you've convinced me, the incident could have been explained
better.

Now you're catching on.
Detective Comics #327, if that's any help.

Broome and Infantino had Batman pick up a thug's discarded pistol
while fighting a group of them, in the first "new look" issue
(Detective #327). Batman was not shown using the gun at all, although
the battle with the thugs was fought mostly off-panel, and Batman was
still holding on to the gun at the end of it. John Broome admitted
later that it was a slip-up, and that he wasn't aware of the Batman
rule against guns when first taking the assignment (which shows that
it wasn't as firmly entrenched in the Batman mythos as it is now).
Are we even sure that Batman's concept of "gun" might be restricted to
projectile weapons? Maybe a ray gun or a beam projector of some type
doesn't qualify because it doesn't relate in the same sense as the
weapon that killed his parents. Have we ever seen him use a knife as
an offensive weapon?

Lilith
For the entire code era nobody at DC used offensive weapons, at least
on panel. Even in the war comics, all you saw were planes crash,
tanks blow up and the occasional crater caused by a hand grenade.

I don't remember a knife but he's been in a few sword fights along the
way...usually against Ra's Al Ghul.
I guess an argument could be made that - in a sword fight - a sword is
a defensive weapon.
I can't recall a time that he killed with a sword, but I won't say
that he hasn't.

Possibly against monsters or some such...but that would be about it.
