Hi there folks. Some of you probably recognise me as one fo the people who
occasionaly start some of those gay superhero threads 8). Anyhow, anyone
interested might like to check out my site:

www.freespeech.org/Gargoyle/Queer/untitled.html

I'd appreciate any constructive comments (or indeed, information and
pictures) you'd care to provide. There's more stuff to add in sitting on my
HD from the most recent thread, but don't worry about commenting on
something someone else has: first time I asked, everyone was telling me
about Northstar 8)

For the Web-challenged, a text-only version of my page is included below.

[Queer Characters in Comics]

What follows is a list of gay, lesbian, bisexual and other queer characters
to appear in comics. This list isn't complete (a good and bad thing) and is
always on the look out for contributions. It would also never have been made
without the help of many many wonderful people inhabiting the
rec.arts.comics newsgroups.

Any additional character names or information you can provide, especially
appropriate images and URLs, would be greatly appreciated and can be sent to

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alpha Flight (Marvel)

CHARACTER: North Star
COMMENT: Confirmed Gay
DETAILS: Jean-Paul Baubier, one of the core team members from the original
series was officially outed in issue #106/#107 by then writer of the series
Scott Lobdell.
However, the character was writen as homosexual from issue #7 by the
original writer of the series John Byrne in a subtle way. The immediate
successor to Byrne was far from this: he had Northstar fawning over
Sasquatch and crying when the character changed sex (see below), and also
gave Northstar AIDS (which Pestilence sped up). This heavy handedness
progressed until Northstar was turned into a "fairy". That was promptly
dropped, his AIDS never showed again, and it wasn't until the arrival of
Lobdell that the character's sexual orientation started to become evident
again.
According to Lobdell, "...Essentially the outing of Northstar came
about because Bobbie Chase (who I miss!) was the editor at the time and as a
stickler for schedule, she wanted an inventory story in the draw, just in
case. I pitched her five story ideas and one of them was Northstar coming
out of the closet.
In my pitch at the time, I essentially said the problem with writing
Northstar is that he has always been pretty much and asshole - rude to
people, always angry with the world. Now, this may or may not get me in a
world of trouble, but my feeling was "Yeah, I guess I would be angry at the
world too if I was spending all my time saving it and yet I feel I couldn't
be myself because people wouldn't accept me. And people that I'm saving to
boot?! Grrrr!" So I felt the way to start to bring Jean Paul away from his
angry young man mode was to let him be himself... let him tell the world
"this is who I am, deal with it."
My goal was, once this story was written and published, was to start to
bring him around... make him happier in his own skin. (We can actually see
the start of this is the issue before that issue when he humiliates the gay
bashers at Box's bachelor party...) It would have taken some time, but the
outing of Northstar would have had a profound effect on the character and
his interactions with others.
So any way, the story was written and then Bobbie started the MIDNIGHT
SON'S universe... which meant she had no time to edit ALPHA FLIGHT. As she
was leaving, she wanted to burn off the inventory story before she left and
so it was sheduled - and no one really gave it a second thought (Not me, not
Bobbie, not Tom DeFalco, not Gruenwald...no one) until the issue was
published and the media frenzy started.
When the new editor came on, he had very definite and conflicting ideas
as to where he wanted to go with the book. (I had shrunk the team to what I
felt was a managable 5, he wanted it back at its 13 membership, etc. etc.
etc...) As was his right, he booted me. As it turned out, he booted me the
week that AF hit the stands...and believe me, that was the last thing anyone
at MARVEL would have liked to have happened at the time because it appeared
to be 'punishment' for outing Northstar."
His creator, John Byrne, was once asked in a chat if he intended for
Northstar to be gay. John said that he was always supposed to be gay, but he
was never supposed to come out of the closet.
And from Alpha Flight #41 - Aurora: Since when do *you* object to
having attractively-dressed men about, my brother?

CHARACTER: Sasquatch
COMMENT: Involuntary Transgenderism (Temporary)
DETAILS: Sasquatch spent some time as a male mind in a female body, and was
still attracted to women during this time. However, there is no evidence
that this desire was acted upon.

Anima (DC)

CHARACTER: Liz
COMMENT: Confirmed Lesbian
DETAILS: Anima was a character spawned by DC's "Blood Lines" crossover event
a few years back where invading aliens inadvertently activated the metahuman
gene of some of their victims by not completely sucking their lifeforce. She
shortly there after saved a group of clubbers from getting raped. These
women - one of whom, Liz, was a lesbian - then became her supporting cast.
She later discoverd her powers were actually metaphysical rather than
genetic, and her series was cancelled after about 12 issues.

Authority, The (DC)

CHARACTER: Apollo & Midnighter
COMMENT: Xena-like subtext
DETAILS: Apollo and The Midnighter are two of the most dangerous individuals
in the WILDSTORM universe, and under the eye Warren Ellis, the two men are
written as a couple, or at the very least sharing a very strong attraction
to one another.

Aztek (DC)

CHARACTER: Heatsnap
COMMENT: Hermaphrodite?
DETAILS: Coldsnap and Heatwave, a man and a woman, were fused into one body
as the villain Heatsnap.

Batman Adventures (DC)

CHARACTER: Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy
COMMENT: Xena-like Subtext
DETAILS: Although not explicitly stated, it is heavily intimated that Harley
Quinn and Poison Ivy are lovers (most notably the BATGIRL oneshot written by
Paul Dini). This would make Harley bisexual (she is after all in love with
the Joker). While it's been seen that Ivy is quite adept at manipulating the
lusts of men (and sometimes women), there's never been any clear indication
as to where her interests lay.
In April 1999, a Harley Quinn / Poison Ivy T-shirt was released with an
image that can easily be construed as supporting the subtext of their
relationship.

Blood Syndicate (Milestone)

CHARACTER: Fade & Tech-9
COMMENT: Confirmed Gay / Bi? Gay?
DETAILS: The readers knew the character was gay, although he was in the
closet, and he had had a relationship with Tech 9 (although its unknown if
Tech was gay or bi).

CHARACTER: Masquerade
COMMENT: Shape Changer
DETAILS: A woman who shapechanges as a man. Preference not known. Further
details required

Camelot 3000 (DC)

CHARACTER:Tristian & Isolde
COMMENT: Transgendered reincarnation, lesbian couple
DETAILS: "Camelot 3000" had various characters from Romantic and Medieval
times being reborn in the far future. Tristan - as in the opera "Tristian &
Isolde" - was orignally a male, but in the story was reincarnated as a
female. When she met the reincarnation of her legendary love, Isolde, they
discovered they were both still in love.
It was *very* strongly implied that this love was then acted upon. At
least as equally as it was implied that any of the hetero couples in the
book (including Guiniviere and either Arthur or Lancelot) were acting on it.
By the end of the story, there was no doubt at all that the two of them were
a physically romantic couple.

Doom Patrol (DC)

CHARACTER: Crazy Jane
COMMENT: Bisexual
DETAILS: Crazy Jane was bisexual. She also had 64 distinct multiple
personalities, male and female, and had some -real- stability problems.

CHARACTER: Rebis
COMMENT: Hermaphrodite
DETAILS: Shi screwed hirself.

CHARACTER: The Brain and Monsieur Mallah
COMMENT: Bizarre Love
DETAILS: One of DC's more unique villain teams from the Rogues Gallery of
both DOOM PATROL and TEEN TITANS, The Brain - an evil brain in a tank - was
in love with his sidekick Monsieur Mallah - an intelligent gorilla. They
appeared in DP #34, but the nature of their relationship was first alluded
to by Rick Veitch in SWAMP THING ANNUAL #3.

Flash (DC)

CHARACTER: Pied Piper
COMMENT: Confirmed Gay
DETAILS: Very overtly written by Waid/Augustyn after a long period of
neglect, and outed by William Messner-Loebs, Pied Piper was outed somewhere
around Flash #53 (current series). Piper's had the same boyfriend for a
while now, with whom he shpwed up to the wedding in the last Loeb issue of
FLASH (#61).
A super-villain named Fury came between them once, but it was unclear
whether he was an ex-partner-in-crime of Piper's or some thing more.

Gay Comics

CHARACTER: N/A
COMMENT: N/A
DETAILS: The name says it all, really. This is a queer comics anthologies,
with characters ranging from original superheroes to stickfigures. There
have been special one-shot stories done featuring mainstream characters such
as The Heart-Breakers and The Maxx. As to how 'canon' these guest
appearances are are unknown.

Gen13 (Image / DC)

CHARACTER: Sarah Rainmaker
COMMENT: Confirmed Lesbian
DETAILS: Gen 13 (Image / DC)
Sarah Rainmaker has been an out lesbian since the start of the series. There
was some debate as to whether she would be turned "bi-" - as fellow team
member Bobby, as a rather severe crush on her - but the writers have
committed to making her very definitely lesbian and keeping her so. Of note
was the decision by TPTB to redraw a passionate lesbian kiss in issue #5 to
a far more chaste embrace.
In the 1st GEN13 novel, Sarah apparently forms a relationship with a
young woman called Kelly, whom she meets in a bar.
There have, of course, been *many* images circulated showing Sarah and
her female team -mates being more than just friends.

Green Lantern (DC)

CHARACTER: More details required
COMMENT: Lesbian Couple
DETAILS: There's a lesbian couple that lives in Kyle's building. A friend of
the couple, also a lesbian, was killed during the Halloween issue by a
homophobic man as part of a very powerful story.

Hardware (Milestone)

CHARACTER: Marissa Rahm
COMMENT: Transexual Lesbian
DETAILS: Marisa Rahm was a transsexual (male to female) cop with a female
lover. Later she became a cyborg and pregnant, to boot.

Havoc, Inc (Radio Comix)

CHARACTER: Chris & Chester
COMMENT: Queer Anthropomorphics
DETAILS: The two male lead characters, Chris and Chester, are lovers. Chris
is bisexual, and Chester has been described as an "equal-opportunity
hedonist".
The website is here.

Heroes / Shadow Cabinet (Milestone)

CHARACTER: Donner & Blitzen
COMMENT: Lesbian Couple
DETAILS: Donner and Blitzen were lovers.
More details required.

Incredible Hulk (Marvel)

CHARACTER: Hector
COMMENT: Confirmed Gay
DETAILS: Hector, a member of a supergroup called The Pantheon, has been out
from his first appearance. HULK #418 has been cited by some as containing
the best take by a comic writer (Peter David) on homosexuality ever.

Invisibles, The (DC)

CHARACTER: Lord Fanny
COMMENT: Gay male transvestite witch
DETAILS: More details required

CHARACTER: Edith
COMMENT: Female Bisexual
DETAILS: An adventurer in the 1920s.

CHARACTER: Jolly Roger
COMMENT: Confirmed Lesbian
DETAILS: An assassin and former member of a cell of radical lesbians called
the "Poison Pussies" - their members included Bambi, Thumper, Bobby and
Sister George.

Justice League of America (DC)

CHARACTER: Ice Maiden
COMMENT: Bisexual
DETAILS: This is where it gets confusing. There were implications that Fire
and Ice Maiden were potentially a lesbian couple - dialogue, flashback
sequences about "being different", and some artwork - that at times left
little to the imagination - essentially came out and said "Yes!" but after
the matter was brought to a head in the script, it just petered out of
existance (ie, The Powers That Be whimped out), and Ice Maiden was
eventually outed as bisexual. As to where either character is now with the
current JLA lineup, who knows?

CHARACTER: Martian Manhunter
COMMENT: Temporary Transgenderism
DETAILS: In JUSTICE LEAGUE TASK FORCE #7-8, J'onn J'onzz (Martian Manhunter)
becomes "J'oann J'onzz" in order to infiltrate an all-female lost tribe of
some description with an all-female team of JLA'ers.

Justice League International (DC)

CHARACTER: Tasmanian Devil
COMMENT:Confirmed Gay
DETAILS: Outed in JLI ANNUAL #2.

Legion of Superheroes / Legionaires (DC)

CHARACTER: Element Lad & Shvaughn/Sean
COMMENT: Bisexual?, Male to Female transgenderism
DETAILS: The Element Lad/Shvaughn relationship that went from hetero to
"gay" with the revelation that Shvaughn was originally a "Sean".
Some lines in the spotlight issue of v4 LSH where this revelation took
place very strongly indicated Element Boy's prefered partner would be male,
although he specifically said it didn't matter to him, or was in spite of,
his main partner's gender (in a retcon, his girlfriend turned out to have
been taking drugs which changed her original male gender to female; the
comment was with respect to "her" not having needed to become female to
become involved with him). The "Zero Hour" story retconned this.

CHARACTER: Lightning Lass & Shrinking Violet
COMMENT: Lesbian lovers
DETAILS: In the Keith Giffen, Tom & Mary Bierbaum, and Al Gordon issues,
Lightning Lass (Ayla Ranzz) and Shrinking Violet (Salu Digby) had a lesbian
relationship, which was stated as existing on a company text page at the
time. However, when the series was rebooted after Zero Hour, this whole
relationship was retconned away.

Love & Rockets ( ? )

CHARACTER: Too many to list
COMMENT: Queer as fuck
DETAILS: For starters: Maggie, Hopey and Terry
As well as Buddy's gay friend who liked to jerk off to pictures of Erik
Estrada, there was the flamboyant hairdresser from #5, and Lisa's friend and
occasional sexual partner Elisabeth from the New Jersey issues.

Mantra (Malibu)

CHARACTER: Mantra
COMMENT: Involuntary Transgenderism
DETAILS: The original Mantra, from the first run of Malibu's ULTRAVERSE, was
a man's mind trapped in a woman's body as the result of a curse. Apart from
the confusion generated by the curse (I think there was a whole other life
involved in curse), Mantra had a husband. I don't know if any of this was
ever acted upon.
More details required.

Purgatori (Chaos!)

CHARACTER: Purgatori
COMMENT: Confirmed Bisexual
DETAILS: Badgirl to the bone, the vampire demoness Purgatori has taken men
and women in practically every sense of the word. Recently she's come up
against a new enemy,: her former lover, Satrina

Resurrection Man (DC)

CHARACTER: Mitch Shelley
COMMENT: Transgender reincarnation
DETAILS: The protagonist of the title, Mitch Shelley has the ability to
reincarnate as a new person with different super powers every time he dies.
In issue #25, he resurrects as a woman. By the next issue, though, she's
back to being male.

Sandman (DC)

CHARACTER: Alex Burgess
COMMENT: Confirmed Gay
DETAILS: Appeared with his lover in both "Preludes and Nocturnes" and "The
Kindly Ones."

CHARACTER: Alvin/Wanda
COMMENT: Transvestite
DETAILS: Featured in "The Doll's House."

CHARACTER: Christopher Marlowe
COMMENT: Historical gay figure
DETAILS: Appears in "The Dream Country"

CHARACTER: Cluracan
COMMENT: Confirmed gay
DETAILS: An example of tongue-in-cheekness that is very cheeky, Cluracan was
a gay faerie. Featured in "Season of Mists".

CHARACTER: Hal, as Dolly
COMMENT: Drag Queen
DETAILS: Featured in "The Doll's House."

CHARACTER: Hazel & Foxglove, Wanda
COMMENT: Confirmed Lesbians
DETAILS: Supporting characters from "A Game of You".

CHARACTER: Judy
COMMENT: Lesbian
DETAILS: Featured in "Preludes and Nocturnes" and died.

CHARACTER: Plath & Evangeline
COMMENT: Lesbian Couple
DETAILS: Featured in "The girl Who Would be Death" by Caitlin R. Kiernan.
Evangeline later makes an appearance in the Kiernan-penned "The Dreaming".

CHARACTER: Zelda and Chantal
COMMENT: Lesbian couple
DETAILS: A couple referred to as the Spider Women. Featured in "The Doll's
House."

Shade the Changing Man (DC)

CHARACTER: Shade & Lenny & Cathy
COMMENT: Transgenderism, Female Bisexuality
DETAILS: Lenny was a bisexual woman, who had a long affair with Shade's
girlfriend Kathy (without him knowing for a while, until he accidentally
turned into a bed cover and the two women had sex underneath him). See
"Lenny's Story".
As part of his metamorphics, Shade also became a woman for a short
time.

Shanda The Panda (SFA)

CHARACTER: Most of the Cast
COMMENT: Queer Anthropomorphics
DETAILS: Shanda is a bisexual; as is her boyfriend's cousin, Pandora, and
Pandora's lover, Rainbow. Shanda's girlfriend Terri, is a lesbian. Another
character, Tanya Hyde, is also bisexual. Her lover Heather, is a lesbian.

Starman (DC)

CHARACTER: Mikaal Tomas
COMMENT: Pansexual Alien(?)
DETAILS: Mikaal Tomas is bisexual, having had boyfriends, girlfriends, as
well as a relationship with a het couple back in the 70's. He has mentioned
that on his world, things are just... different.
Mikaal Tomas is an alien life form, and as such cannot be properly
categorized in Earthly taxonomy - for instance, it is dubious that he could
properly be considered a vertebrate, except by analogy. More to the point,
it's an open question as to whether he could properly be considered to be
"male" (except, again, by analogy). Consequently, defining Mikaal's romantic
relationships with humans of either gender in terms of sexual orientation is
something of a misconception.

Static (Milestone)

CHARACTER: Rick
COMMENT: Confirmed Gay
DETAILS: Rick was a member of the supporting cast.
More details required.

Strangers In Paradise (Abstract / Image / Antarctic Press)

CHARACTER: Katchoo
COMMENT: Confirmed lesbian
DETAILS: Katina "Katchoo" Choovaniski is an out lesbian, and former
high-class call-girl, who has been in love with her best friend Francine
since high school. She has made no secret of this attraction, and once
Francine did almost kiss her, but realised what she was doing and promptly
hid in a closet.
Francine's inability to decide what she wants from a relationship with
Katchoo results in the latter declaring she's had as much as she can take
and marry their friend David. Though she does love David - in love with her
much the way she was in love with Francine - and he more than definitely
holds a torch for her, it's unknown if this was ever consumated.
Other lesbian/bisexual women make occasional appearances, mostly in
connection with the criminal organisation Katchoo was formerly employed by.

Supergirl (DC)

CHARACTER: Andy
COMMENT: Lesbian? Bisexual?
DETAILS: A supporting cast member, Andy (Cutter's ex-wife), has been
flirting heavily with Linda (Supergirl's alter ego), casting a whole load of
questions on Supergirl's orientation.

Superman (DC)

CHARACTER: Maggie Sawyer
COMMENT: Confirmed Lesbian
DETAILS: One of Superman's supporting cast later given her own 4 issue
mini-series co-starring Lois Lane, Captain Maggie Sawyer is a lesbian, with
a journalist girlfriend and a daughter who is considerably more cool with
her mother's sexuality than Maggie's ex-husband is, though that was somewhat
dealt with by the end of the METROPOLIS SPECIAL CRIMES UNIT miniseries.
In the novelisation of the "Death & Return of Superman" story arc,
there are scenes where Maggie is concerned that she will be discriminated
against by her superiors because of her sexuality, and mentions that she is
the head of the MCPD Gay & Lesbian Officers Association. She and her
girlfriend have both appeared in the Superman Animated Series; as to whether
they're out in that series, I don't know.

Tragic Heroes

CHARACTER: Fast Forward (Chris Mitchner)
COMMENT: Confirmed Gay
DETAILS: According to writer/artist Eric L. Kent, a core emember of the team
namedFast Forward "will be played realistically and none of the hiding him
in the shadows bullshit. Just to make that clear in issue 2, I made the
character kissing his boyfriend, the center stage of the page.

Watchmen (DC)

CHARACTER: Captain Metropolis
COMMENT: More details required
DETAILS: More details required

CHARACTER: Hooded Justice
COMMENT: More details required
DETAILS: More details required

CHARACTER: Silhouette
COMMENT: More details required
DETAILS: More details required

Wonder Woman (DC)

CHARACTER: The Amazons
COMMENT: Mass Lesbianism/Bisexuality
DETAILS: References in some past issues of WONDER WOMAN strongly suggest
that homosexuality was a prevalent (though by no means sole) aspect of the
Amazon society. No specific characters, however, have been identified as
lesbian. Diana's attraction to Superman certainly suggests that she's het,
or at least bi, though.

X-Men

CHARACTER: Mystique / Destiny
COMMENT: Shapechanger, hinted lesbian relationship
DETAILS: Mystique is bisexual but has not been "officially" outed as such,
even though there have been numerous allusions to this in various pieces of
dialogue throughout the run of the various X-titles.
In X-MEN UNLIMITED #4, she tells Nightcrawler that she is his mother
and that Sabretooth is supposedly being the father. Writer Chris Clairemont
had originally intended that Mystique be the father, with her lover Destiny
being the mother. XMU#4 has been criticised for ignoring Clairemont's intent
(amongst other things), but as writer Scott Lobdell points out, even though
he personally does not think the Mystique / Destiny scenario is physically
possible because of how he sees Mystique's powers working, it is still quite
possible that the villainess is lying to Nightcrawler about his origins.
By way of supporting evidence, there is:
The waltz scene is in Marvel Fanfare #40, where Mystique assumes the
form of a man so she and Destiny can dance. Also, Mystique calls Destiny "my
love", and earlier wipes a tear away from her cheek, saying "I wouldn't
cherish you any the less". Overall, Mystique isn't the most demonstrative
person in the world, so this seems significant.
In Uncanny X-Men #265 the Shadow King says: "I am primarily interested
in [Freedom Force's] leader, Mystique, and her leman, the precognitive
Destiny." Leman is another term for lover.
UXM #255, where Destiny tells Forge: "Love her, Forge, as I have, with
all your heart. She deserves no less." "My heart's spoken for, old woman."
"Thus speaks one aware solely of the present. Who perhaps forgets, that for
all their passionate glory, it's the nature of storms ever to pass."
Another implied reference is UXM 224, when Rogue says "Mystique leads
'em [FF]. She an' her partner Destiny, they pretty much raised me, they're
more my folks than my natural parents."

I don't know if you've updated this entry yet, but: Andy's a
confirmed lesbian even before she 'joined' with Comet. So, she's gay,
Comet isn't, and they both agree on who they like, sound alright?
AND, Linda ain't gay. She was attracted to Comet for the sole reason
that he's the Earth-Born Angel of Love (hey baby, wanna see my halo?).
When Linda learned this, it seemed to break the spell (or maybe Comet
'blocked' it off). The proof that Linda's not really gay: she wasn't
attracted to Andy at all (that I could see).
As a mature comic reader who's interested in seeing gay issues
discussed, I was ambivalent about this. One the one hand, they handled
Linda's questioning her sexuality quite well (something that David has
done before, apparently), but I was, somehow, dissapointed when it all
turned out to be a supernatural cause. The whole thing was obviously
planned from the beginning, but it -felt- like a dodge at the last
minute. Of course now that we've seen more of Andy's past, I don't
think that was a fair assesment at all. David is -perfectly- willing
to look these issues in the face, he just didn't think Linda was gay.

We can make it about pre-boot Vi or the planned gay legionnaire which will
no doubt stay a mystery forever, but I think with the angst over Legion of
the Damned people don't need to get worked up anymore.

OK. Regarding the characters in Watchmen:

Captain Metropolis' sexual orientation never came up. I think we can assume he
was straight, just like most Golden-Age superheroes.

Hooded Justice was gay, and had rough relationships with boys. At least, this
is strongly implied by the "exercpts" from a novel by one of the characters.

Silhouette was a lesbian. This resulted in her being forced out of the group
to avoid a public scandal. This was revealed in an "interview" with one of her
former team-mates.

Nah. He was gay. He and Hooded Justice were a couple. It's mentioned in
the text piece at the end of issue 9. They're compared to 'an old married
couple'.

The 'rough stuff' is mentioned in the letter in issue 9.
Hooded Justice also appears to have been involved in a 'cover story' fake
relationship with the original Silk Spectre to hide his relationship with
Captain Metropolis.

Yep, and she and her lover were later killed by a former enemy.

There's also 'Joey' the lesbian cab driver who buys Hustler at the newsstand
and has a fight with her girlfriend.

And then there's Rorschach who can definitely be interpreted as a latent
homosexual.

Also in the interview with Sally Jupiter. (She states that two of the men
were gay, and one of them died recently, this interview being published two
years after Nelly's death.)

Watchmen, with at least five gay characters, is probably the best place to
go for Queer Comics Characters. The Minutemen might even be the world's only
super-team with more gays than straight characters, since we know nothing
about the sexuality of Dollar Bill and Mothman, and Hollis Mason seems to be
completely sexless.

Cannon and Sabre, two assassins from the Vigilante comic, were heavily
implied homosexuals also.
