I was going through some of my older stuff recently, and I found my
application pamphlet for the LSH chapter of the DC Super-Stars Society
circa 1978. For those of you who don't remember, this was going to be
DC's version of "the latest word in fan clubs, designed to save you
money on subscriptions, give you a chance to make friends who share
your interest in DC Comics, and become more involved with your
favorite heroes."

There were a number of chapters: based on the heads pictured, I'm not
totally sure who had their own and who was part of a group.
Represented were Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Supergirl, Superman,
Wonder Woman, Flash, Batman, Dr. Fate, Power Girl, Chameleon Boy,
Black Lightning, Sgt. Rock, and Capt. Marvel.

I remember sending off for this kit, but my money got returned. I was
really disappointed. I assume the DC Super-Stars Society fell by the
wayside in the wake of the DC Implosion? Anybody have any other ideas
or recollections?

On the front cover of the Legion chapter intro kit is the Grell
portrait of the Legion from That Damned Tabloid (All-New Collectors
Edition C-55), featuring Superboy holding up the three founders (who
are standing on a platform made of Cham that reads "Superboy and the
Legion of Super-Heroes") and flanked by 18 other Legionnaires.

On page 2 is the LSH quiz: "Test your knowledge of the 30th Century's
Super Teens!", which I'll reprint over in the rac.dc.lsh newsgroup
only.

Page 3 has the Membership kit details:
* a 17x22 poster by Jose Luis Garcia Lopez
* a cloth patch
* a DC Super-Stars Society decal and an iron-on insignia transfer
* a membership certificate "suitable for framing"
* a membership card with the chapter's secret code on back
* discount coupons to save on Dollar Comics, Amazing World of DC
Comics, Direct Currents, and the regular line
* the DC Super-Stars Society Bulletin "with contest announcements,
instructions for establishing your own local chapter of the DC
Super-Stars Society, and more!"
* an exclusive set of DC Super-Star Society envelopes "to identify you

as a member and give your letter to the editor special handling!"

Page 4 has a page from Superboy 239 by Starlin, featuring the Legion
swooping down on Ultra Boy, who has been framed for the murder of An
Ryd; the answers to the trivia quiz; and the application form "to
become a lifetime member of the DC Super-Stars Society" for just four
bucks to get the Special Charter Membership Kit.

Did anyone ever get an actual package from this club? Anyone out there
have any of the other chapter applications?

I also applied for the JSA one and I remember getting a cheesy
letter but I don't remember getting my money back. Oh well, I am a JSA
Fan Club unto myself! Too bad DC doesn't wanna come along for the ride....

Nope, I got a sorry this is on hold, but keep reading your favorite DC comics letter. My guess is they wanted to create their own FOOM, but they were to late for the craze and the club was announced just a couple of months before titles started dropping like flies.

Yep, it exists. I've got a copy on tape.

Oh yes, it existed all right (though I don't think that that was the title). . .

Adam West & Burt Ward reprised their roles, plus they had a bunch of other
JLA heroes and their villains (right now all I can remember are GL, Flash,
Atom, Hawkman, and Sinestro as played by Charlie Callas). I don't remember
WW or Superman, but that is either because those characters were tied up
in other deals or I am in denial.

I only remember seeing two of these specials, and being extremely disappointed.

Wasn't that the parody game show where the Super Heroes competed against
the Super Villians? I rememer specifically Mordru being on the show and I
think Solomon Grundy was also there. It was live action.

The picture hadn't been inked. It was a blue and white picture, right?

I also applied for this club, but for the Justice Society chapter (hey, I was 7
years old. It would be another full year before I discovered the Legion). My
money (wasn't it kind of expensive? I seem to remember my mom giving me a hard
time about writing the check. The number twenty-two dollars sticks in my mind,
but I know that can't be right!) was also returned, with a letter explaining
that there was "not enough interest" to support the Society. Ah well. At least

I have confirmation of this and know I'm not dreaming. Now if someone could
only confirm the existance of the "Roast of the Super Friends" live action show

from approximately the same time...

Actually, it had been inked; the whole thing was printed in blue
(instead of black) and white.

Of course, I then went and colored the whole thing with permanent
marker, but hey, I was only 12 at the time.

Hey, they're *your* books. Example: sure the value might go down when I
colour in in 60-80 colours coloured pencil things like Peanuts books, or the
Mayfair LSH books (which I've mostly done and have not finished).

I don't believe in collecting just to gather dust and pass on; my comic
book collection is a reading collection, just as even my prize-winning
miniature paint jobs are used in gaming, even if they flake/chip etc.

Confirmed. We were probably the only two people on the planet to watch
that particular show. I don't even remember any details from it, except
that most of it seemed mighty boring to me.

I can not only confirm it, but have publicity pictures of the TV show
that featured Flash, Green Lantern, Batman (& Robin, of course) among
others. There was also a followup...something like a game show, with
the heroes pited against an assortment of villains. I'll dig those
pictures up and try to get them scanned and uploaded RSN.

I can definately confirm the existance because I have it on videotape.
There were 2 shows. They were called "Legends of the SuperHeroes." The
first one was titled "The Challenge" and the second one was titled "The
Roast."

Johanna, since you've got it on tape, maybe you can confirm or deny
my pre-pubescent memories -- Wasn't the show actually called "The
Legion of Super-Heroes?" I just remember Mordru singing an incredibly
cheesy solo and getting a pie in the face from Batman. No actual fights.
I was so disappointed. When I heard the word "roast," I assumed the
villains were going to actually try to cook and eat the heroes.

I've seen both these specials as recently as a few days ago.
They were called The Legends of the Superheroes and featured the following:
Batman, Robin, Huntress, Hawkman, Flash, Green Lantern, Black Canary and
Captain Marvel.
The villians included Frank Goshin as The Riddler, but I don't remember
seeing Mordru the Magician in them.

To say they looked cheap budget is an understatement.

In the roast Mordru sang a warped version of "These are my favorite things",
I think. I only saw them once when they first aired.
