Back in late 1994 Silicon Spider asked if all place names in the
Looniverse were punned, to which the reply was more or less 'yes', with
lots of examples being given. Then Dave Van Domelen mused:

1.0 Introduction:
This is a guide to place names for mainstream Loonivearth/Looniearth
(Also referred to variously as Net.Earth (_501 Blues), Earth-Loon
(_Dvandom Force_ #39) and as Earth-A (_Net.League of Heroes_). There
are probably others that I've missed).
The Looniverse is a very weird place, but this is perfectly acceptable
because it's an ACBU (Absurd Comic Book Universe). One of the most
noticeable differences are the place names. The Looniverse exists in the
Net (well, actually it resonates in sympathy to events in the Net, but
that's being technical). As a result, place names tend to be puns, usually
Net-based puns. One doesn't go to New York, one goes to Net.York.
Generally. There are exceptions.
Specifically, the Looniverse is inhabited by people covered by various
publishing imprints. Some of them do not use Net names.
The Looniverse is primarily inhabited by (well, has most frequently
documented the adventures of) the Legion of Net.Heroes (LNH). They tend
to use Net names all the time.
The Order of St. Doomas/Dumbass (OSD) also lives there, but most of the
time they don't care whether they're using names that are Net-based puns
or not, just as long as they can track down and punish sphammers.
Preferably with extreme prejudice.
On the other hand, despite their name the Net.Trenchcoat Brigade (NTB)
tends not to use Net-pun names. Although the nominally share the same
world, and occasionally the same continuity, they don't share the same
genre and tend to prefer non-punned names. They may be referring to
exactly the same place, physically, as the other two groups, but the
point-of-view is different.
Naturally, since this is a document for the use of the Legion, Net
names that are puns on the names used here in Real Life are given
emphasis. For ease of reference, the arrangement is by
giving the Real Life name first, followed by the Loonivearth equivalent.
Within that framework geographical features are divided up into
sections, then subsections if necessary. Firstly are Continents, then
Nations (subdivided into states, thence cities and towns), then Oceans and
Seas, and Other Features (mountain ranges, deserts, etc.). Within the
Countries and States division, capital cities will be marked with a (c).
I have also included a separate section for the fictional cities like
Coastal City and Got.ham, since I haven't the faintest idea where they
are, and moreover have a sneaking suspicion that there's no consensus
on it anyway. For this version of the FAQ, I have added a full sub-
section of text description for Net.ropolis.
There is also a section for extra-Terrestrial places. This section is
slightly different from the first, Loonivearth based sections, as a brief
description is given. I've included a small note on which source I used
for the information; in some cases other sources may exist as well.

2.31 Net.ropolis
Net.ropolis is the home city of the Legion of Net.Heroes, and is where
the LNH(occasional optional H here)Q is set up. Naturally then, it has
been extensively - if haphazardly - detailed.
Net.ropolis has a certain fluidity to it: landmarks sometimes shift
about. This flexibility is only occasional, however, and is nowhere near
as marked as the near constant mutability of the LNHQ. Moreover, the
LNHQ's mutability is due to the combination of interdimensional nexus
it sits on, the ley lines that meet there, and other exotic intangibles.
By comparison, Net.ropolis' flexibility is more likely due to its
fictional nature, and things tend to shift about only when a particular
Writer forgets where something should be. It is therefore entirely
possible that the bulk of the Looniverse's non-superhuman natives
wouldn't even notice the cities changes where they would those of the
LNHQ.
General Layout:
Net.ropolis is a port city on the East Coast of Ame.rec.a, off the
Sound, probably somewhere in either Net.York or Net.Jersey.
The city is arguably one in decline as middle and upper class taxpayers
move out to avoid the super battles and the very high insurance premiums
that result.
Like many cities it had a building boom in the mid 1980s, which has
now resulted in a definite 'abandoned warehouse' district which is now
used by criminals needing secret hideouts.
Net.ropolis' slum area is Hovel Homes, which is largely ignored by
heroes and villains alike, although CAPTAIN CAPITALISE does some
community service there.
There are extensive underground tunnels and sewers that have been
infested by Ewoks, Gremlins and eldritch horrors at one time or another.
Net.ropolis' ethnic suburbs are even more specifically delineated than
normal. In addition to the usual Chinatown and Little Italy districts,
it has areas like Kansastown (a three block area in the city's north).
Specific Places:
The LNHQ fronts onto Rackham Avenue.
Net.ropolis has a number of comic book shops. These include Net.ropolis
Comics (reputed to be possibly the largest comic shop in the world, and
which sells, among other things, 6 foot tall Totoros).
Net.ropolis possesses at least one major bridge, the Emperor Norton
Bridge. It also has at least three major parks: Central (Ce.net.ral) Park
(opposite which is the Second InterNet.sional Bank), RAC.Arthur Park, and
Net.ropolis Park (which contains the famous Philosopher's Needle).
There is a convention center called the Net.ropolitan (or just 'the
Net') on the Great Alt Way (where the annual rACCCIEs are held). There
is also the massive Net.ropolitan Bandshell which was created for the
RACCelestial Madonna Pageant and is now used for public entertainment.
The major centers of higher learning are Dave Thomas Deluxe University
and Net.ropolis University. High schools include the Net.ropolis Academy
(where many of the teenaged LNHers attend), and Net.ropolis Junior High.
Utilities variously include Net.ropolis International Airport, and the
Net.ropolis Water Treatment Plant. Most of the cities' power comes from
either the geothermal power plant (within walking distance of the LNHQ),
or the Net.ropolis Nuclear Power Plant at 2 1/2 Mile Island.
Somewhere in or around the LNHQ is the hall of Fallen Heroes, where
statues of dead LNHers are enshrined.
Net.ropolis contains the Library of Infinite Stories, which has a
proprietary portal to Crossroads in it.
Newspapers include the Net.ropolis Daily Pla.net (employer of Johnny
Fearless), and the Net.ropolis Times.
There is the Church of DVANDOM (with wReamicus Maximus as high
priest). Sites of more conventional religious denominations include
Get.semane Evangelical (with Pastor Norman McKenzie).
There is a trendy theme restaurant chain, 'the Net.Hero Cafe', which
is based in Net.ropolis. There is a karaoke bar named the Sing-Along
Cafe in honour of Sing-Along-Lass. Other restruants named include the
hideously expensive and exclusive Fettucini's, the more reasonably priced
Betty's Diner (in Kansastown), and Guido's Pizza Pit (popular with
LNHers). There is also the Waffle Palace, the Cold Vengeance Ice Cream
Parlor (453 North Eyriewood), and at least one Frogurt Hut (the one on
Rackham Ave has been destroyed).
Sidekicks'R'Us has recently come under new management. It is housed in
the Sidekicks'R'Us Building.
From the top of the Net.ropolis Trade Towers it's possible to see all
of Net.ropolis. Other skyscrapers include Oblivion Towers (which may or
may not have undergone repairs and name change following Dr. Oblivion's
arrest).
The Net.ropolis Arms is a ritzy hotel.
Lovecraft Asylum is a mental institution in or near the city.
Art galleries include The Morgue Gallery, specialising in images of ghosts
and run by the death-obsessed eccentric millionaire Mr. Wellings De Ville.
In the docks area is a thug bar called the Bent Quarter. There is also
The Bar, which caters for both low-middle class and criminal clients.
The city has a retirement village for criminals, the Home For Aged But
Unrepentant Villains Village.
It has both an elevated rail-line, the El, and a subway system.
There are a large number of streets named after prominent Real Life
comic book artists and writer. These include Byrne Avenue, Edlund Street,
Mignola Street.
Social Structure
The Mayor of Net.ropolis is Boris Wippleshod. [Hey, Descri! Even if
issue 7 of _Kid Kiwis Kommandoes_ never happened, can he still be Mayor?]
The Net.ropolis Police Force has a prominent official in Sgt. Paddy
O'Furniture. Other officers named include Reed Spacer, Lt. Neill (who
handles sidekick problems), Lt. Ayre Headed, Sgt. Lovell Carter, and
Officers O'Malley and Andy Jandleman.
In return for continued good will from the city, the LNH have agreed
to help in any civic problems, no matter how mundane. Golden Man, having
few, if any, storylines to support tends to act as a sort of one-man
civic response force for non-crime problems. There is a well practiced
evacuation proceedure for the blocks around the LNHQ.
The _Net.Hero Weekly_ is a popular trade paper for net.heroing.
The Looniversal chapter of the Black Ink Irregulars seems to be based
in Net.ropolis.
McLaughlin Man was recently temporarily replaced on his top-rated hero-
baiting TV talk 'Net.ropolis AM Live' on the Net.New.Network show by
Limbaugh Man. Lethal Lawyer worked for both in some sort of ill-defines
sidekick/announcer/producer role. McLaughlin Man subsequently moved back
onto Net.ropolis AM Live when Limbaugh Man gained his own show 'Limbaugh
Man' on the same network.
A top-rated kids' show is 'LNH: The Animated Series'.
The city host the annual fencing and diamond sellers' convention, 'the
Ice and Slice'.
The Brotherhood of Net.Villains financially controls a majority of the
city's construction materials industry.
Queen Bee Enterprises employs a large number of Net.ropolitans,
although only a small number publicly.
Motorcycle insurance is almost prohibitively high in the Looniverse
in general.

other races have subsequently developed as a tourist attraction. Consists

Says you. I've been following the Scav Method of Looniversal Geographic
Names for the past few years. According to this method, only Net.ropolis
has a net.name. Try reading a story with three different versions of
"Boston" in it and you'll understand why this method is good. :)

Net.ropolis contains Sim Library, which is not quite the same thing, and
which has precisely the same amount of connection to Crossroads and the
Library of Infinite Stories as the library down the street from you.
