Andrea Dworkin claimed that sex industry encourages men to see women as sexual objects and as such leads to rape.

She was very profoundly wrong.

In reality, sex industry reduces rape. It allows men who otherwise would not be having sex a way to have sexual experience. And this reduces, not increases, rape and sexual assault.

Rape is worst in places where there is no sex industry. Congo, Afghanistan, rural Ethiopia and Bosnia during the war did not have sex industry, and in all these places the rapes have been extremely high. Whereas we see much fewer rapes in places like Netherlands, where sex industry is accepted.

Why do men rape women? Well, that depends on the man; but one answer you won't often get is "because I've read Playboy" or "because I've looked at a table dancer in a club." In South Africa - one of the most rape-infested areas in the world - a lot of males rape because, according to them, "jackrolling [rape] is fun." There were guys in Afghanistan who were demonstrating against the recent anti-rape laws with signs that said "We want to rape." And in rural Ethiopia, the favorite way to get a wife is to rape a teenage girl - and, as the family and everyone else rejects her for no longer being a virgin, the girl has nowhere to go to except the rapist.

If you are outraged by this, you are not alone. I am as well. But before doing anything effective about a problem one needs to understand what are the causes of the problem, and that also means understanding what they are not. Sex industry is not the reason for rape and abuse against women. The worst abuses happen in places where there is no sex industry. Rape pre-exists strip clubs and porn movies by thousands if not millions of years, and it is worst in places where such things do not exist.

Did I say millions of years? Yes I did; as we also find similar things in the animal kingdom. Dolphins - the second smartest species on the planet - reproduce through gang rape. Do dolphins rape females because they see them as sex objects from having seen them swimming naked in the ocean?

You get my drift.

So no, sex industry is not the reason for rape and can be safely excluded as the main cause of this problem. There are men with brutal impulses, men who don't control themselves, men who don't care what they are doing, men who think that they have right to rape women; and all of the above can be real reasons for the problem. Strip clubs and pornographic movies and magazines are not the reason for this problem, and they were never the reason for this problem. Study the Congolese, study the Afghans, study the Bosnians and the Ethiopians, and find out what causes rape for real.
