It's that time of year again, when we can hardly decide what to read
ourselves, let alone what to give anyone else. Here are a few
suggestions and staff favorites.
FICTION
_The Best American Erotica 1994_, edited by Susie Bright. An eclectic
overview of erotic writing from a pioneer in the study of sexual thought
and practice. (paperback)
_The Best American Short Stories 1994_, Tobias Wolff, editor. A stellar
collection of stories to curl up with on winter nights. (paperback)
_Body and Soul_, Frank Conroy. In 1940's New York, against a backdrop
pulsing with sound and rhythm, a musical child prodigy uses his genius
to pull himself out of squalor into the drawing rooms of the rich. An
old-fashioned, beautifully written book. (paperback)
_Corelli's Mandolin_, Louis De Bernieres. A novel of wonderful
imagination, dazzling humor and farce. On the Axis-occupied Greek island
of Cephallonia during the years of World War II, a love triangle plays
itself out in unexpected ways.
_Jefferson: A Novel_, Max Byrd. Thomas Jefferson was a man of
contradictions, fighting for individual liberty while he kept slaves,
advocating free will but denying it to his daughters. This rich novel
takes place in Paris, during Jefferson's tenure as ambassador to France,
and confronts aspects of his life (such as his relationship with Sally
Hemmings, his slave mistress) not usually depicted. (paperback)
_Snow Falling on Cedars_, David Guterson. The post World War II murder
trial of a Japanese-American man on an island in Puget Sound becomes a
brilliant study of community psychology, racism and the ambiguities of
justice. An elegantly written novel with almost tangible descriptions of
the locale.
_Songs of Enchantment_, Ben Okri. The adventures of Azaro, the spirit
child, continue. A radiant sequel from the prize-winning author of _The
Famished Road_. (paperback)
_Strange Pilgrims, Gabriel Garcia Marquez. A collection of stories
combining surreal comedy and the poetry of the commonplace from the
Nobel Prize-winning author of _Love in the Time of Cholera_.
(paperback)
_Who Will Run The Frog Hospital_, Lorrie Moore. An American woman
visiting Paris remembers a summer in upstate New York when she was
fifteen. A tale of music, memory and the first breathtaking trial runs
on the journey into adulthood.
_Your Blues Ain't Like Mine_, Bebe Moore Campbell. A _New York Times_
Notable Book of the Year. The death of a black Chicago teenager visiting
relatives in Mississippi sends shockwaves through a precariously
balanced community. (paperback)
NONFICTION
_China Wakes: The Struggle For The Soul of a Rising Power_, Nicholas
D. Kristof and Sheryl Wudunn. "When China wakes, it will shake the
world," Napoleon Bonaparte once remarked. That moment is now at hand.
The authors, Pulitzer Prize-winning Beijing correspondents for the _New
York Times_, bring to life the people, the politics, and the paradoxes.
_The Hot Zone_, Richard Preston. The scariest book ever about "hot"
(meaning "incurable, highly contagious, makes you die in nasty ways")
viruses. Reads like a thriller, but it's true! On the same subject, but
treated in a more scholarly fashion is _The Coming Plague_ by Laurie
Garrett.
_The Jew in The Lotus: A Poet's Rediscovery of Jewish Identity in
Buddist India_, Rodger Kamenetz. While accompanying eight high-spirited
Jewish delegates to an historic meeting with the Dalai Lama, poet Rodger
Kamenetz comes to understand the convergence of Jewish and Buddhist
thought.
_Life On The Edge: A Guide To California's Endangered Natural Resources:
Wildlife_, Biosystems Books. The fate of our wildlife involves more than
biology and quality of habitat. History, politics, toxic waste,
population growth, human thirst and human greed are all explored in this
cross-disciplinary and multilayered resource guide. Available in
hardcover and paperback.
_No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in
World War II_, Doris Kearns Goodwin. The author of _The Fitzgeralds and
the Kennedys_ explores a major turning point in our history: when an
isolationist America in the throes of depression unified against the
threat of war under the extraordinary leadership of Franklin Roosevelt--
and emerged a superpower.
_The Complete Schwa Kit_. An absolute must-have stocking stuffer for
anyone on your list who's worried about being abducted by aliens! For
those who *want* to be abducted, there's the _Complete Counter Schwa
Kit_.
_Sit! The Dog Portraits of Thierry Poncelet_, text by Bruce McCall.
Thierry Poncelet is a Belgian original whose surprising portraits
express something new and quite whimsical about people, dogs, and the
kinship between them.
_Six Easy Pieces: Essentials of Physics Explained By Its Most Brilliant
Teacher_, Richard P. Feynman. A publishing first: six chapters of the
legendary Richard P. Feynman's landmark work, _Lectures on Physics_,
which were designed with the non-scientist in mind, coupled with
recordings of the late, great physicist delivering the lectures on which
they are based.
_The Tribe of Tiger: Cats and Their Culture_, Elizabeth Marshall Thomas.
The author of _The Hidden Life of Dogs_ turns her keen powers of
observation on cats in a fascinating take on this graceful and
resourceful animal.
_Vulvamorphia_, edited by Lillian Lennox. A polymorphous chorus of
little things, the sad, discarded, lost, forgotten, denied, repressed,
disavowed and foreclosed subjects, objects, and thingnesses of the
world.
_Why Cats Paint: A Theory of Feline Aesthetics_, Heather Busch and
Burton Silver. An unprecedented photographic record of the artistic cat
at work. You have to see it to believe it (or not!). Available in
hardcover and paperback.
BIOGRAPHY
_Baba: A Return To China Upon My Father's Shoulders_, Belle Yang. Belle
Yang tells the story of her father's coming-of-age in northern China
with prose as vibrant as the colors of her illustrations, which combine
traditional Chinese watercolor technique with the author's unique style.
A gorgeous book!
_Born Naked_, Farley Mowat. Canada's most famous writer of nature lore
tells the story of how his lifelong passion started. An absorbing and
hilarious read from the author of _Never Cry Wolf_.
_Theo_, Theodore Bikel. Activist, actor, musician and now author
Theodore Bikel presents the compelling story of his life, told in his
own unique, eloquent and fiercely committed style. Some autographed
copies available.
COOKBOOKS
_The Best of The Beautiful Cookbooks: Three Hundred of The Best Recipes
>From Italy, France, Mexico_. A fabulous collection of recipes from three
of the favorite cookbooks in the "Beautiful Cookbooks" series.
_Chocolate and The Art of Low-Fat Desserts_, Alice Medrich. Alice
Medrich, author of _Cocolat_ and Patron Saint of Chocoholics, presents a
groundbreaking collection of dessert recipes, all miraculously low in
fat!
_Frida's Fiestas: Recipes and Reminiscences of Life With Frida Kahlo_,
Guadalupe Rivera and Marie-Pierre Colle. The mystery and magic of Mexico
and Frida Kahlo brought to life by Diego Rivera's daughter. The recipes
are divided into a cycle of twelve fiestas, from Posadas (Christmas) to
the Day of the Dead.
_M.F.K. Fisher, Julia Child and Alice Waters: Celebrating The Pleasures
of The Table_, Joan Reardon. A celebration of the accomplishments and
friendships of three women who changed the way Americans think about
food and cooking, dining and pleasure.
_Renoir's Table: The Art of Living and Dining With One of The World's
Greatest Impressionist Painters_, Jean-Bernard Naudin, Jean-Michel
Charbonnier and Jacqueline Saulnier. The title says it all. A
fascinating look at the turn-of-the-century culinary delights of an
artist who loved to eat as much as he loved to paint.
CHILDREN'S BOOKS
_The Book That Jack Wrote_, Jon Scieszka, illustrated by Daniel Adel.
Another indescribable picture book from the author who brought you _The
Stinky Cheese Man_ and _The True Story of the Three Little Pigs_.
_History of The World_. Dorling Kindersley, the publisher of the
stunning _Eyewitness_ series, presents an international and
multicultural history book for an international and multicultural
generation. Some Dorling Kindersley titles are now available on CD-Rom.
_Julie_, Jean Craighead George. Julie, the Eskimo girl who survived on
the Alaskan tundra with a wolf pack in the Newbery-Award winning _Julie
of the Wolves_, returns in this sequel to face a new challenge: coming
home.
_Keepers of Life: Discovering Plants Through Native American Stories and
Earth Activities For Children_, Michael J. Caduto and Joseph Bruchac. A
new collection of hands-on activities based on Native American stories
that continues in the tradition of _Keepers of the Earth_, and _Keepers
of the Animals_.
_Seven Candles For Kwanzaa_, Andrea Davis Pinkney, illustrated by Brian
Pinkney. This beautiful and informative book presents a special
celebration of the unique African-American holiday.
_The Three Golden Keys_, Peter Sis. World-renowned artist Peter Sis
brings to life the magic of Prague and its legends. A man in a hot-air
balloon is blown off course in a violent storm, and lands in the city of
his childhood.
_Troubling a Star_, Madeleine L'Engle. A journey to Antarctica and a
mystery involving drugs, nuclear waste and family secrets await
L'Engle's heroine Vicky Austin in this new book from the author of _A
Wrinkle In Time_.

Gloeckner. A great stocking stuffer for a budding gardener or kids in
need of a science project. Covers everything from plants that look like
stones to Venus flytraps!
_The Willows In Winter_, William Horwood. The author of _Duncton Wood_
has written a stunning re-creation of the much-loved world of Kenneth
