I just started reading Annie Proulx's "Shipping News", generously lent
to me by a friend. I got stuck on this phrase ("hive spangled") and
have been trying to figure out what the heck it means...any ideas?
Does this mean he looks like he is covered in bees, honey, honeycomb,
he has a honeycomb complexion...what!
I usually read quite fast but this is driving me crazy. Please help
me out here!
Thanks,
Shelli

I'll be hornswaggled if I know.

It means covered in hives; red blotches on the skin which generally
disappear after a few hours.
As a description, it is very well written IMO.

I guess I thought it should be "hives spangled" if it referred to
having hives as the singular is seldom used (not in my dictionary
anyway!)

Good point. You'd have to be very small physically to "break out in a
hive." OTOH, if you have more than one, and they're arranged like
stars on the jack of a flag . . . .

You would then suffer from "confluence of hives," a genuine
medical condition.

I know, I had it after eating shrimp years ago. Had to get an adrenalin
shot and take prednisone for ten days. And no more shellfish--ever!

I don't want to be presumptuous by suggesting a better orthography
for this neologism, but if she had written hives-spangled, there would
have been much less of a problem. Hives is a red skin rash
and easy to find in any dictionary.

Shelli i know where you got the idea of hive being a "bee-hive".
However "hive" has two meanings; one being a bee-hive,and the sencond meaning "to spearate one part of a group from the rest". So in this paragraph it uses the second meaning.
Spangled means to cover something a shine.
hope this helps
