Gardner's "Art Through the Ages" (8th edition, authors Delacroix and Tansey)
was the textbook for an Art History class I took, and I liked it very much;
the text as well as the illustrations.
The most effective thing to do, I think, in learning about Art History, however
is just to flip through the pages of a book with lots of pictures, like this
one, and read when you find something you like.

E.H. Gombrich's _The Story of Art_ is good as well - it contains many
interesting insights. It's also written for the layman, so it's easy to come
to grips with. It's well worth a read if you get the chance.
