With all this talk of Arwen's genealogy I wonder if anyone can answer
a question that's bothered me since rereading LOTR recently. In the
chapter "Many Meetings" there is the following sentence with reference
to Arwen's brothers:

But her brothers, Elladan and Elrohir, were out upon errentry: for they
rode often far afield with the Rangers of the North, forgeting never
their mother's torment in the dens of the orcs.

According to a recent posting Arwen's mother is Celebrian, daughter of
Galadriel and Celeborn.

What bothers me is that Arwen's mother is never mentioned again in LOTR,
as far as I can determine. Surely at the end of the 3rd age this important
person would not have been left behind in Middle Earth in the hands of the
orcs?

I think it was in the Silmarillion "Of The Third Age and The Rings Of
Power" where it is stated that after her encounter with orcs, Celebrian
sailed West Over The Sea. Elrond joined her at the end of the age.

From Appendix B--The Tale of Years:
(Third Age)

2509 Celbrian, journeying to Lorien, is waylaid in the Redhorn
Pass, and receives a poisoned wound.
2510 Celbrian departs over Sea. [rest of entry is irrelevant
to this discussion.] (p. 368 HM "Red Book")

From Appendix A.iii--Eriador, Arnor, and the heirs of Isildur

"In 2509 Celebrian wife of Elrond was journeying to Lorien when she
was waylaid in the Redhorn Pass, and her escort being scattered by the
sudden assault of the Orcs, she was seized and carried off. She was
pursued and rescued by Elladan and Elrohir, but not before she had
suffered torment and had received a poisoned wound. She was brought
back to Imladris[Rivendell], and though healed in body by Elrond, lost
all delight in Middle-earth, and the next year went to the havens and
passed over the Seas. (p. 323 HM "Red Book") [This is a portion of a
longer passage describing the re-appearance of Orcs at about 2500
Third Age.]
