I do not think it is mentioned in the LotR by name. I have not found it
in the most likely places, and it is not mentioned in the index of names at
the end of RotK.

Err... for 'animal' read 'Ainu'.
7. Is it an Ainu?

Yes.
As spiritual beings they belong to none of the standard three groups -
animal, plant, mineral. But they can take on physical bodies. And while
the Ainur were the direct offspring of the thought of Ilvatar, the term
"Children of The One" is reserved for Elves and Men. But I must admit that
categorizing and "yes/no" answers may be a bit dicey here.

> 7. Is it something other than a troll?
Yes. But since Arvind asked his question first, and since the answer to
it answers also yours, I will not tally this question.

I think your answers were spot on, actually. I did wonder a bit about
whether Ainur were 'animals' before asking the question (which is why
I initially said 'animal' instead of 'Ainu'), but figured that they
wouldn't fit into any other kingdom.

Aha! That does exclude Bill Huggins, Bert and Tom, who are indeed not

10. Is it Yavanna?
jevind
In "The Hobbit", where we learned that his full name was William Huggins. It
happens right after Bilbo has tried to steal the trolls' talking purse.
"You're a fat fool, William", said Bert, "as I've said afore this evening."
"And you're a lout!"
"And I won't take that from you Bill Huggins", says Bert, and puts his
fust in William's eye.
Notice that towards the end, even Tolkien's narrative style becomes rather
cockneyish. "Says Bert."

I will tally neither of these questions, since they have already been
answered under question 8. Yavanna and Varda are both female ainur. Also
by question 4 it cannot be Varda since she is richly mentioned in the LotR -
mainly under the name Elbereth, but in the chapter Farewell to Lrien she is
also mentioned as Varda. Twice in Galadriel's lament sung in Quenya, twice
in the English translation immediately following, once to mention that Varda
is the same Lady as Elbereth.

So, unless I have gotten something wrong, it is either Manwe or
Mandos. Manwe is indirectly mentioned in the LoTR (there is a
reference to the 'Elder King' in one of the Appendices), so...

Yes, Manw is indirectly mentioned. But not by name. By fairly obscure
reference, twice: in Appendix A where Nmenor is described, and in Bilbo's
song that was sung in Rivendell in the chapter Many Meetings.

For some reason the last bit of the thread was lost from RABT, so just

finished :-)
