In recent years anthropologists, art historians and informed laymen have
become increasingly interested in the rock art of the western United
States. In response to this
interest a symposium was held at the Denver Museum of Natural History in
April of 1987 to address some of the recent research in this fascinating
field. The
enthusiastic response of both the participants and audience at the
symposium led to the publication of the papers presented in this volume.
A variety of research interests are represented in this book.
Presentations focus on such diverse topics as the star ceilings found in
southwestern canyons, the
controversial issue of the Ogam panels of south eastern Colorado, and
the vital need for preservation and protection of the irreplaceable
heritage of the art.
