[1] ALDANOV, Mark Aleksandrovich, THE FIFTH SEAL, New York:
Scribner's (1943). Copyright 1943 by Charles Scribner's Sons.
Translated by Nicholas Wreden. In this novel, originally published
in Russian in 1939, Aldanov, then regarded as among the greatest of
Russian authors in exile, depicted the general disillusionment,
pessimism and feeling of helplessnes that characterized Europe as
WW II approached. Per the DJ: "Entirely fresh in its approach,
instead of picturing the Soviet hierarchy through Western eyes, it
presents a panorama of the modern world as seen through the eyes of
Soviet officials. The setting is Western Europe on the eve of the
Second World War, but the chief characters are members of a Soviet
embassy staff and the people with whom they come in contact...
there are plots and intrigues, clashes of personalities and
smoldering violence, as well as brilliant slashes of satire such as
only an accomplished writer can create." 482 pp., hardbound, brown
cloth with gold lettering, red and gold design; DJ with portrait of
author on back panel. Except for slight bending of one corner of
cover, and very light soiling and edgewear of DJ, book is in very
good condition. -- $16 plus shipping

[2] HILLESUM, Etty, LETTERS FROM WESTERBORK, New York: Random
House/ Pantheon (1986). First American Edition. Copyright 1982 by
De Haan/Unieboek b.v., English translation copyright 1986 by Random
House, Inc. Per the DJ: Etty Hillesum's diary, 'An Interrupted
Life' (published 40 years after her death), gave back to the world
an extraordinary figure--the adult counterpart to Anne Frank--a
startlingly modern young woman who lived in Amsterdam during the
Nazi occupation... Now Etty Hillesum's 'letters' complete the
portrait of this astonishing personality, as they reveal the final
year of her life in the transit camp Westerbork, the last stop
before Auschwitz. With 14 pages of photos, 156 pp., hardbound,
beige cloth and board with white abstract design, gold lettering;
DJ design includes photo of author against background of one of her
letters. DJ very lightly soiled with minimum edgewear, otherwise
this book is in like-new condition. -- $16 plus shipping

[3] HILTON, James, THE STORY OF DR. WASSELL, Boston: Little, Brown
(1943). First Edition. Copyright 1943 by author. From the DJ:
"This simple true story of a Navy doctor from Arkansas, who got his
wounded men out of Java through the turmoil of the Japanese
invasion, will stir the hearts of Americans as Mr. Hilton's tender,
imaginative study of an English schoolmaster, 'Good-bye, Mr.
Chips', did when it was published in 1934." 170 pp., hardbound,
light green cloth with blue lettering and design; DJ includes photo
of novel's hero, Commander Corydon Wassell. Except for minor
fading at top edge and at bottom of spine, cover in good condition;
DJ moderately soiled with edge tears; hinges secure, endpapers
intact; pages clear and in excellent condition. -- $9 plus shipping

[4] LOCHNER, Louis P. (ed.), THE GOEBBELS DIARIES 1942-1943,
Garden City, N.Y.: Doubleday (1948). Copyright 1948 by Fireside
Press. Translated and with Introduction by Lochner, who was the
Chief of the Berlin Bureau of the Associated Press and personally
met Goebbels. Per Publisher's Note: "Goebbels' entries are given
as he wrote them, with the gutter language into which he frequently
lapsed.... The selections reveal Goebbels as the unflagging motive
force behind the vicious antisemitism of the Nazi regime." Diary
entries are interspersed with explanatory notes by the editor, and
gaps in the diary are filled by "Recapitulations" of events between
the end of one diary entry and the beginning of the next. 592 pp.,
including disclaimer by the U.S. Office of Alien Property and
alphabetical index. Frontispiece photo of Lochner with Goebbels.
Hardbound, black cloth with gold lettering and salmon highlighting
on spine. Cover slightly scuffed and edgeworn with some sunning of
spine; hinges secure, endpapers intact; pages are in excellent
condition except for a few instances of marginal foxing toward the
front. -- $14 plus shipping

[5] MALRAUX, Andre, DAYS OF WRATH, New York: Random House (1936).
Copyright 1936 by Random House, First Printing. Translated by
Haakon M. Chevalier. This critically acclaimed work, which
appeared early in the Third Reich era, denounces the debasement of
human dignity in Nazi concentration camps. 174 pp., hardbound,
gold cloth with black and gold lettering and design; DJ with
charcoal-like drawing of men saluting Nazi banners. Cloth cover in
very good condition, DJ lightly soiled with small edge tears;
binding tight, hinges secure; pages clear and in very good
condition. -- $19 plus shipping

[6] REYNOLDS, Quentin, THE CURTAIN RISES, Garden City, N.Y.: Blue
Ribbon Books (1944). Copyright 1944 by Random House. About the
early days of World War II, with scenes in Tehran, Moscow and
Sicily, among other places, as well as sketches of people the
author met, including General Eisenhower and Bob Hope. (The author
was in Moscow as a press officer to W. Averell Harriman. Ten years
after this book was published, Reynolds, represented by noted trial
lawyer Louis Nizer, won a major libel award against a Hearst
newspaper columnist that charged him with being pro-communist.) 354
pp., hardbound, brown cloth with gold lettering. Cover soiled and
edgeworn, especially at corners, spine sunned. Hinges fairly
secure, endpapers intact. Gift inscription dated 1944 on front
endpaper. Except for one bent corner and minor, sporadic marginal
foxing, pages clear and in very good condition. -- $11 plus
shipping

[7] WILLIAMS, Albert Rhys, THE RUSSIANS: THE LAND, THE PEOPLE, AND
WHY THEY FIGHT, New York: Harcourt, Brace (n.d.). First Edition.
Copyright 1943 by Harcourt, Brace & Co., Inc. Per the Preface:
"For a long time the question was, 'How will the Russians fight?'
That question has been answered on a hundred battlefields... If
all the superlatives lavished on the fighting Russians by Allied
statesemen and soldiers were transformed into guns and munitions,
they would already be victorious. From 'How will they fight?' the
question turns to 'Why do they fight?' and 'What are they fighting
for?' and 'What will they do after the fighting is over?'" To
answer these questions, this book describes "the Russian land, the
people, their institutions and ideas -- what they have achieved in
the past 25 years and what they hope to achieve in the future."
With alphabetical index, 248 pp, hardbound, black cloth with red
lettering and design. Cover moderately scuffed with some edgewear,
especially at corners and top and bottom of spine; front hinge
secure but back hinge weakening (endpaper split); pages clear and
in very good condition. -- $16 plus shipping

[8] WINTER, Gustav, THIS IS NOT THE END OF FRANCE, London: George
Allen & Unwin (n.d.). "First published in 1942." Explores the
reasons for the collapse of France in the early phases of World War
II and attempts to demonstrate that it is "not the final word in
the history of a nation which has reached the end of its destiny,"
but is merely "a terrible episode in the annals of a nation which
is not yet nearly at the end of its resources." 300 pp., hardbound,
orange cloth with black lettering. Cover moderately soiled, with
small dark stain on spine, corners bent in, slight edgewear; hinges
secure, endpapers intact; bookplate and owner's inscription ("...
Londres 1944") on front endpaper; pages clear and in very good
condition. -- $9 plus shipping

[9] WELLES, Sumner, THE TIME FOR DECISION, New York: Harper &
Bros. (1944). Copyright 1944 by author, "manufactured in strict
conformity with Government regulations ..." Surveys events in
Europe between the wars, evaluates problems in various parts of the
world and makes recommendations for the future, including the
establishment of an effective world organization. By FDR's
undersecretary of state, who, among other things, helped formulate
the Good Neighbor Policy. With index and foldout map showing
author's proposal for post-war Germany. 432 pp., hardbound, dark
blue cloth with gold lettering. Cover lightly soiled, worn at
corners and at top and bottom of spine, lettering on spine
considerably faded; hinges secure, endpapers intact. Some foxing of
