. A fine copy. Very pretty color plts by the New Zealand illustrator
Harold Gaze of elves and fairies in a style somewhat reminiscent of
Outhwaite and Folkard. Scarce. $75

54 The Sensitive Plant by Percy Byshe Shelley illus by Laurence
Houseman NY 1899 First American Edition 8vo 60 pgs Publ white pict
cloth gilt. TEG Pict frontis, pict TP in red and brown and 11 full pg plts
with tissue
guards . Covers very slightly discolored , gilt slightly faded, else a fine
copy. Houseman has risen to the occassion of illustrating one of the
most lyric poems in the English language with an extraordinary series of
drawings in pen and ink which are amongst the finest of his career.
Most of Houseman's drawings were admirably engraved on wood by his
sister Clemence but here the drawings are reproduced directly from the
originals
in photogravure and the results are as wonderful as they are
illuminating. Printed by Ballentine, Hansen and Company for Dent's
English Illustrated Poems Series. A very scarce book. $75

Christy. 8 lg mounted color plts of figures from the romantic drama
each affixed to board mounts. Covers somewhat worn and scuffed , ties
only
partially present , some mounts slightly chipped at edges and one plt
with narrow fold at bottom , else very good. Christy 's full length
pastel portraits of noted theatrical celebrities of the day portraying figure
s of romance are of superb quality and have been beautifully reproduced
in facsimile in this handsome and exceedingly scarce album. Amongst
those portrayed are: Joseph Jefferson as Rip Van Winkle, Ellen Terry as
Port
ia, Maude Adams as Babbie and Julia Marlowe as the fiery Carmen.

Pale foxing to EPs else a very good copy. Cecil Aldin's lively ink and
watercolor drawings bring these poems of foxes and fox hunting to vivid
life. $35

the Files of W. Straker Ltd. London(nd) Lg thick folio Black leather
covered bds Album of over 1000 printer's proofs in black and white
and m
onochrome from the files of the London printing firm of W. Straker Ltd.
mounted on heavy paper with tissue interleaves. Included are drawings by
Mabel Lucie Atwell, E H Shepherd, Ernest Aris, Joyce Mercer, Harry B Nei
lson, Ruth Cobb and many many others including repros of book cover
art by Lawson Wood , Chloe Preston G E Studdy etc. Covers slightly worn
else very good. The majority of the illustations reproduced here appear to
hav
e been published in British children's annuals during the 1920s and 30s.
Taken as a whole this album , the record of a prominent London printing
firm offers an invaluable overview of an important aspect of the field o
f British children's book illustration in the decade and a half before the
outbreak of WW2. $300

59 (Poster) Lord of the Rings- The World of JRR Tolkien Artwork
by Alan Lee Full color publicity poster for the authorized deluxe edition
of the Tolkien classic published by Houghton Mifflin in 1991. The pos
ter printed on heavy glosssy stock appears to have received very limited
distribution . Poster measures approx 20 x 30 inches and depicts a
walled city surrounded by a celtic style border. Scarce. $25

60 (Color print) Pithecanthropus by Zdenek Burian Prague
1960 Print measures 37 x 24 inches and is printed on heavy stock.
This large wall mural reproduced with great fidelity from Burian's famous
painting
was issued at the time the well known Burian album on prehistoric man
appeared for use by museums and universities in Czechoslovakia.
Copies of this and the other wall murals reproduced from the artist's
paintings
in the 1950s and 60s remain exceedingly scarce and are greatly prized.

61 (Color photo) Alice on the Queen's Croquet Grounds by
Frank Adams This large color photo measures approx 11 x 14 inches
and has been reproduced directly from Adam's original watercolor first
publ by the
London firm of Blackie and Son Ltd in 1911 in a small 8vo edition.
Containing some of Adam's most charming illustations the original book
edition was somewhat marred by the great reduction of the plates. In thi
s large faithful color photo Adam's artistry can be seen to far better
advantage. Photo comes in a special envelope with a pict paste label.

62 The Starlit Mire by James Bertram and F. Russell Illustrated
by Austin O Spare Brighton, East Sussex 1989 8vo 62 pgs. Publ
green cloth with gilt pict design and lettering. Pict frontis and 9 full pg in
k drawings all with tissue interleaves. #148/500 copies. A fine copy.
Handsome facsimile reprint of the scarce ltd edition publ by John Lane in
1911. Fantastic black and white drawings by the great British occult
draughtsman Austin Osman Spare. Acclaimed at the outset of his career
as an artistic prodigy and enfant terrible by the art establishment
Austin Osman Spare (1886-1956) turned his back on worldly fame
prefering inst
ead to work in relative obscurity and to exhibit only occassionally in
working class pubs and taverns in London's seedy South End. Because
of this Spare's art soon fell into obscurity, sought out only by a small
group of devoted followers. In recent years however , due partially to a
resurgence of interest in the occult and fantastic art in general Spare 's
drawings are gaining broader acceptance and a major art monograph e
xploring his life and work in depth is soon to be published. $25

63 (Color photo) Birth of a Hydra by Austin Osman
Spare. Originally published in a limited edition under the mistaken title of
"Totem" several years ago this large color photo of one of Spare's
great o
ccult drawings is being made available for sale again . The drawing
portraying three powerful disembodied heads surrouded by tendrils of mist
is extremely unsettling and lends credence to Spare's claims of having vi
sual access to regions outside the normal. Photo comes mounted in an
envelope with a pict label. Only a few copies left. $20

64 (Color photo) River Styx by Austin Osman Spare. Early
watercolor and ink drawing by Spare (circa 1906) depicting a shaggy
haired prophet seated by the bank of a river. A powerful work showing
the influence of Or
iental art on Spare in his formative years. Spare was a keen admirer of
Fitzgerald's Rubaiyat and read and reread the work many times with the
intention of illustrating it. The present watercolor may relate to this p
roject although Spare's prophet looks exceedingly bestial and his
demeanor is underlined by the animal skull suspended from his neck.
Reproduced directly from the original art the photo measures 11x14 inches
and come
s in an envelope with a pictorial label. Only a very few copies left. $20

65 (Color photo) Earth Inferno by Austin Osman Spare
Watercolor and ink drawing depicting a sorcerer at work. Image size:
11x14" matted and limited to only 20 copies. Executed in 1906 on the
vellum co
ver of a deluxe edition of his first album "Earth Inferno" this
extraordinary drawing was almost certainly commissioned by Pickford
Waller, one of Spare's most important patrons. Stylistically however, it
bears a cl
oser relationship to the work Spare was doing for his second album " The
Book of Satyrs" .than the earlier album and is signed with a strange
monogram that Spare devised incorporating the initials of his name, and
a host
of other letters which can be combined to spell out words that were of
significance to him. A pencil and ink study for this work is in The Spencer
Collection of the NY Public Library but in the study the features of the
sorcerer are Spare's own while in the finished version the visage is far
more satanic and bestial. $40

ontaining an elaborate decorative design in gilt after Pogany. TEG
Color frontis pict TP in red and black , 29 full pg color plts with
lettered tissue guards, and numerous pict initials and tailpieces by
Pogany.
Board edges rubbed and some wear along spine gutters else a very
good. copy. This elaborately illustrated edition of Goethe's classic was
commissioned from Pogany early in his career before he had fully
establish
ed himself and he took the assignment seriously producing an
eyecatching and highly theatrical series of drawings and watercolors
which leave one in little doubt as to why he achieved such great success
as an art
director in Hollywood during the 1920s and 30s. The ornately
decorated leather spine on this copy appears to have been used on a
limited number of copies of the American edition of this book , most
copies containing
the more ubiquitous cloth spine. $80

ith lettered guards depicting characters from Dicken's famous novels laid
in loose as issued. Portrayed are: Scrooge; Dick Swiveller and the
Marchioness; Mr Pickwick ; Mr and Mrs Micawber, David Copperfield and
Tradd
les; Caleb Plummer and his daughter; and Tom Pinch and his sister.
Spine missing and some pgs with small tears at edges not effecting plts
or text else a sound copy of an exceedingly scarce volume . The huge
plate
s contain facsimile reproductions of Gibson's drawings. The plates have
turned up separately framed but albums with the complete complement of
drawings intact are rare. $225

68 Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson illustrated by
Lyle Justis Phil 1930 First Edition sm 4to 228 pgs. Publ tan buckram
with pict design and lettering in red. Pict half title, pict TP in red a
nd black , 129 illus in the text and pict EPs all in line with pale muted
coloring. Fine copy in worn slipcase. One of the great illustrated editions
of Stevenson's classic handsomely produced and beautifully designed.
Justis's drawings here are the best this talented draftsman ever
produced and show the influence of Daniel Vierge , the great Spanish
illustrator who also inspired Joseph Clement Coll. The book with Justis's
drawing
s was reprinted many times but without the fine production values of the
first edition. $35

69 (Original art) Pilgrim Thanksgiving by Grim Natwick
(circa 1930s) india ink and grey wash with white tempera on heavy paper
18x22 inches. signed Grim Natwick at lower right. Slight edge discolorat
ion else fine. Grim Natwick is of course celebrated for his fine work in
the field of animation especially for the Disney Studios where he was a
principal animator on Snow White and for Max Fleisher were he created
the
character of Betty Boop. Less well known is his work as a freelance
illustrator for newspapers and magazines during the the 1920s.
Respected by his peers as a superb draftsman Natwick experimented weth
a variety of
styles and approaches in his early work and his skill in the capturing
of movement and personality served him well when he left illustration and
entered the animation field in 1930. This large and highly adept draw
ing probably appeared on a humorous postcard or in the pages of a
newspaper. (From the estate of the artist) $400

70 (Original art) The Elves' Elmtree Avenue by Dorothy
Wheeler Watercolor on illustration board approx 8x11 inches framed
and glazed and signed and titled on the backboard by the artist with her
a
ddress. In fine condition. Charming childen's book illustration executed
circa 1930s supposedly for one of Enid Blyton's early childrens books.
Depicts a fairytale village populated by dozens of colorfully dressed elve
s. Dorothy M.Wheeler (1891-1966) was a noted British postcard designer
and children's book illustrator who came from a family of artists (her
sister Millicent was a successful artist as was her uncle Charles.) She
beg
an her career working for Carlton Studios and achieved renown on the
publication of her very first book English Nursery Rhymes issued in 1916
when she was only 24 years old. She went on to illustrate a host of
childre
ns books and picture postcards and did lavish color illustations for
many of the popular magazines of the day such as The Sketch, The
Illustrated London News, The Tatler and many others. She was also one
of the popu
lar British writer Enid Blyton's major illustrators, working with her from
the late 1930s through the 50s. She specialized in the portrayal of
cheerful dimpled children and faeries somewhat in the vein of Mabel Lucie

Atwell and Chloe Preston although she was less mannered and a better
draftsman than the aforementioned. It was said that she based many of
her designs on the patterns seen in soap bubbles and owned a special
bubble ma
king machine with which to study various effects $225

of Drawings in Black and White by Jessie M King London ,Glascow and
Boston 1909 First American Edition .thin 8vo Publ color pict wraps, pict

4 full pg line drawings and one vignette by Jessie King. Slight wear
along paper spine, small fold at upper corner of wrapper several pgs with
pale foxing , else a very good copy of a fragile book. A collection of de
licate, atmospheric line drawings depicting streets and houses in an old
town in Fifeshire, a few with depictions by Ms. King of her pale etherial
children crouching in doorways, gazing out on courtyards or wandering
along the cobblestone streets. A haunting little portfolio by a great
Glascow illustrator. $45
