I acquired these books but I am not an educated collector/dealer, and I have no
idea what they are worth. I don't want to spend a lot of money to have them
appraised or a lot of time researching myself - if I even knew how. But I
don't want to be taken advantage of.

I think you are correct. The Darwin is certainly valuable. For the
books after 1900 you need to specify whether they have dust jackets or
not; the DJ can be 80% of the value.
I would suggest having them appraised. An independent appraiser
gets a fixed price, and will not buy the books, so you can be assured
of a fair valuation. There is at least one society of appraisers
(ISA, I think.) Otherwise, soliciting opinions here was a good idea.
Note that a dealer will offer you perhaps 30% of the "retail" value,
but it *is* a lot of trouble to sell (and ship) books individually
(although I think it's fun.)
