Publication Year: 2003
Publisher: Joanna Cotler Books
ISBN: 0060286288
Condition: New
Format: Hardcover
Synopsis
A collection of comic strips by various artists, each of which begins
with the phrase, "It was a dark and silly night."
Fifteen authors and illustrators share comic-book style stories
inspired by the line "It was a dark and silly night." Contributors
include Neil Gaiman and Gahan Wilson, William Joyce, and Lemony
Snicket and Richard Sala.
Publisher's Note
We planted a seed in some of the most fertile minds of the planet:
cartoonists, novelists, and children's book artists. We asked them to
start a story with the words:
It Was a Dark and Silly Night...
We wanted to know...What happened next???
What grew from the seed is this generous, chock-full, over-the-top
jungle of silly comic book stories that show how rich the human
imagination is. Lemony Snicket and Richard Sala imagined a dark and
silly night where a young girl chases after a Yeti. Neil Gaiman and
Gahan Wilson imagined a dark and silly night where kids throw the
greatest party they ever had...in a graveyard! William Joyce tells us
about kids whose Silly Ray saves the world from warrior florists.
This collection of wild and silly imaginings will tickle your funny
bone for years to come.

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com:
As they say in Glasgow, you'd have to be a right numpty not to
rejoice at a third book in Debi Gliori's delicious Pure Dead comedy
adventures. Things are in a turmoil, as usual, at StregaSchloss, the
ancestral castle of the Strega-Borgias in Argyll: Titus and his
sister Pandora are at odds because their grandfather, Don Chimera di
Carne Borgia, known as il grande parmigiano, or "the big cheese," is
about to make Titus the sole heir of the family fortune; Signora
Strega-Borgia has invited her flaky classmates at the Institute of
Advanced Witchcraft to spend a week at the castle practicing their
spells; Ffup, one of the house dragons, is sulking about her diaper-
changing responsibilities as a teenage single mom; and grouchy Marie
Bain, possibly the worst cook in the British Isles, has created an
accidental specialty of kippers in raisin and rat pee sauce. Worst of
all, word has gotten around in demonic circles that the long-lost
Chronostone is secreted someplace in the castle, and the sinister
Astoroth, Second Minister of the Hadean Executive, is hot on its
trail, as is another demon, Flamma d'Infer, who is disguised as one
of the apprentice witches. Events take a decidedly random turn when
the family's wise and comfortable magical nanny, Mrs. McLachlan,
discovers that the baby Damp is an infant magus. And that's only the
beginning of this gothic romp that can only be described as, well,
pure dead brilliant. (Ages 10 to 14)
>From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-7-Young readers will be "dying fain" at the arrival of the
third installment of the zany adventures of the Strega-Borgia clan.
Young Titus is about to inherit a massive fortune from his mafioso
grandfather, and his family won't leave him alone. Between their
mother's witchy houseguests-one of whom might well be plotting evil-
and a definitely evil uncle's nefarious plans to get the fortune for
himself, the Strega-Borgias barely have time to breathe, and the
Beasts in residence are once again in rare form. Gliori's excellent
turn of phrase and sense of humor will instantly draw readers into
the mystical world of Strega Schloss and its inhabitants. Readers
will roar as each page turns and new, even more preposterous
scenarios arise. The "Gliossary" in the back is also a helpful touch
for the wee laddies and lassies new to Scottish slang. Filled with
fun phrasing and plenty of scatological bits thrown in for good
measure, the story is sure to be popular with fans of the first two
outings.

ONE MORE WEDNESDAY - $4.99
Author: Malika Doray, Suzanne Freeman
Publisher: Greenwillow \Publication Year: 2001
ISBN: 0060295899
Format: Hardcover
Condition: New
Category: Science & Nature
Synopsis
When a little animal's grandmother dies, he remembers good times with
her and asks his mother about death.
Publisher's Note
On Wednesdays when I was little, Granny and I baked cakes and
cookies....
And that was only one of the things that made Wednesdays -- and
Granny -- special.
Malika Doray has written and illustrated a unique tale of love, loss,
and understanding that will help and comfort anyone who has lost
someone important, and open the way for all of us to talk about the
mysteries of life, death, and eternity.
REVIEWS:
Publishers Weekly: French author/illustrator Doray's debut picture
book treats the subject of death with tenderness and simplicity. Each
Wednesday, a small rabbit spends the day with Granny. They bake
together and take walks in the park; the grandchild listens to her
sing while coloring. "But then one Wednesday came, and I couldn't go
see Granny. She was in the hospital." Later, the youngster attends
her funeral with his or her parents, but is confused. "Did this mean
that my granny was gone forever?" The rabbit and Mama talk about
death, and her words are comforting: "Before you were even born, in
some way you were already here because we wanted you so much. And
it's the same way with Granny now. In some way she'll always be here
because you love her so much." The book ends on a happy note, as the
youngster snuggles down to sleep buoyed by memories of their shared
Wednesdays (Granny's dog at the bedside). The spareness of the text
is mirrored in Doray's boldly delineated black-and-white line
drawings, which are punched up with a single color per page a red
balloon, a yellow sweater, a blue jacket, blades of green grass. An
effective and eye-catching conceit, it helps keep attention tightly
focused on the sympathetic development of the theme. Ages 4-up.
School Library Journal: PreSchool-Grade 1-A young narrator recalls
Wednesdays spent with a beloved grandmother, baking cakes and cookies
(and eating them), having fun together. One Wednesday, grandmother is
in the hospital, and later the family learns that she has died. "'Did
this mean that my granny was gone forever?' I asked Mama." The mother
answers, "Nobody knows for sure," and explains that some people
believe that one's spirit goes to heaven, others that it returns in
some living form. But, the mother says, "In some way [Granny will]
always be here because you love her so much." The text is spare and
sweet. The mother's explanation may not meet every family's needs,
but for many, the simple words, gracefully translated, will provide a
basis for discussion. The two-legged, slightly quirky bunny-people in
the black-line, brush-and-marker illustrations have a sketchy,
quickly drawn look that is both expressive and unadorned, somewhat
reminiscent of Matt Groening's cartoons. The trees look charmingly
like the tops of large carrots. A touch of color adds emphasis to
each of the illustrations. Overall, the effect is one of gentle
recognition of loss, grief, and the gift of memories.
Booklist: Ages 4-8. With very simple words and drawings, this
picture book, translated from the French, will help adults talk to
young children about grief following the death of a loved one. A
small animal has good times with his grandmother. Then Grandmother
dies. He goes to the funeral, but he doesn't understand what's going
on. He talks to Mama, and she helps him see that Granny will always
be here "because you love her so much." At first, thinking of Granny
makes him cry, but then it's just nice to remember. The clear, full-
page pictures, with thick, black brush lines and just a small splash
of one primary color on each page, express the warm family bonds, the
emptiness the child feels, and the slow coming to terms. There's no
sentimentality, and the quiet pages leave lots of space for each
family to fill in their own details.

just beginning.
EDITORIAL REVIEWS
Amazon.com:
Truth be told, Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean's picture book The Wolves in
the Walls is terrifying. Sure, the story is fairytale-like and
presented in a jaunty, casually nonsensical way, but it is absolutely
the stuff of nightmares. Lucy hears wolves hustling, bustling,
crinkling, and crackling in the walls of the old house where her family
lives, but no one believes her. Her mother says it's mice, her brother
says bats, and her father says what everyone seems to say, "If the
wolves come out of the walls, it's all over." Lucy remains convinced,
as is her beloved pig-puppet, and her worst fears are confirmed when
the wolves actually do come out of the walls. Up to this point,
McKean's illustrations are spectacular, sinister collages awash in
golden sepia tones evocative of the creepy beauty in The City of Lost
Children. The wolves explode into the story in scratchy pen-and-ink,
all jaws and eyes. The family flees to the cold, moonlit garden, where
they ponder their future. (Her brother suggests, for example, that they
escape to outer space where there's "nothing but foozles and squossucks
for billions of miles.") Lucy wants to live in her own house...and she
wants the pig-puppet she left behind.
Eventually she talks her family into moving back into the once-
wolfish walls, where they peek out at the wolves who are watching
their television and spilling popcorn on slices of toast and jam,
dashing up the stairs, and wearing their clothes. When the family
can't stand it anymore, they burst forth from the walls, scaring the
wolves, who shout, "And when the people come out of the walls, it's all
over!" The wolves flee and everything goes back to normal...until the
tidy ending when Lucy hears "a noise that sounded exactly like an
elephant trying not to sneeze." Adult fans of this talented pair will
revel in the quirky story and its darkly gorgeous, deliciously shadowy
trappings, but the young or faint of heart, beware! (Ages 9 and older)
Washington Post
"The illustrations are amazing. And, like every good scary story,
there's an unexpected twist at the end."
Sunday Times (London)
"Spectacular...atmospheric, sinister, scary, and funny...This is a book
for cool kids who will grow up to be fearless."
Family Fun Magazine
"Gaiman, with regular collaborator Dave McKean, suffuses this
sumptuous story with a night-light-worthy creepiness."
