I only found out because I included her city's name (Leicester) in my search - if you search on her birthdate, it doesn't help.

(That is, the names of her husband and children all match.)

She was also a physiotherapist.

Not to be confused with Joan Smith (born in 1938), the Regency romance novelist. Or the 59-year-old British novelist/journalist/activist.

In "Something About the Author":

"....Children's books do need a workmanlike plot, even more than adult works, and I have to work on this. I find legend useful and often tie a modern problem to a local folk tale, frequently one with a foreign location.......

"I do think writing for children is harder than writing for adults, in that there is a choice - either the well plotted, turn the page, action story OR the in-depth, analytical development of character. Children demand action, teachers and librarians demand literary values. Therefore, a children's writer has to satisfy both, not one or the other."
